Small Plane Crash in NYC..Plane Registered to Cory Lidle?!

Post by webdanzer »

2 dead. NY news reporting that the plane was registered to Cory Lidle.

ESPN now reports, as I am typing, that Lidle has passed away.

Prayers and thoughts go out to his family.

Horrible.

NEW YORK

A small plane crashed into an Upper East Side high-rise Wednesday, shooting flames out the windows, raining debris on the sidewalks below and rattling New Yorkers' nerves exactly one month after the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Police confirmed 2 people are dead.

Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for FBI, said there was no indication of terrorism, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." FAA spokesman Jim Peters said all three New York City-area airports were operating normally.

Very strange. I could see the smoke from my office windows. Ironically, he was interviewed last month about his flying and said that his plane had a parachute which could bring it down gently in an emergency.

Yeah, my brother just called me about this. Cory was a teammate of mine for a few years when I was in the minors. I caught him on numerous occassions. This is a shock. I'm at a loss for words. I know he has at least one child...very young. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Apparently they found his passport at the scene.

Condolences to Lidle's family and friends. Sorry, Diablo, I know this must hurt more for you more than most.

Take care,

Thoughts and prayers to the Lidle family. As a Yankee fan, I only got to see Cory pitch for a short while but I admired his desire to win and his willingness to speak his mind. This is a sad day for all of baseball and heartbreaking to those whom he touched in life.

Bill, I am sorry. It is always hard to lose someone who you shared a personal connection with.

What is with the Yankees and plane crashes? It has been almost 30 years since Thurman Munson's hall of fame-like career was cut extremely short.

I hope MLB steps up and helps the Lidle family through their tough times and helps take care of the wife and the little one.

According to ESPN, Lidle's wife is entitled to 170-190k annually under the MLB players association. That's a pretty good payment plan.

He will likely lose the 1.5 million in players union life insurance plan because he was piloting the airplane. That is one of the things that isn't covered...if he was just a passenger, he would still be eligible. I wonder if there really is a way to tell who is piloting the aircraft. Maybe the little black box can tell who was piloting by the voice recordings or whatever, but still...that's a lot of damn money to lose.

At least MLB has some money set aside for the wives of guys like Lidle and Daryl Kile, who were taken much too early. 170k isn't very much when you're used to millions, but it's definitely more than enough live off of.
