Match Report

Newcastle 5 Lazio 3

No stats due to d/c

Scoring:

Newcastle: Owen 5', 38' Shearer 22',Dyer 55'

Lazio DiCanio 11', 19' (PK), Dabo 45+ (OG) E. Fillipini 83'

No bookings or injuries

An exciting match between old rivals Newcastle and Lazio, as the English side prevailed in a wild one. Michael Owen headed in the opener from Lee Bowyer's corner kick to open the procedings.

DiCanio responded for Lazio just moments later with an odd goal. Filipini ripped a shot off the left goal post, but Newcastle keeper Shay Given was wrong-footed and dove the wrong direction. His wild dive left the mouth of the goal open for DiCanio's shot on the rebound.

Before Newcastle could catch their breath, they found themselves down a goal due to a penalty. Boumsong clattered DiCanio in the box and the ref did not hesitate in pointing to the spot. DiCanio took the penalty well and scored with a screaming shot despite Given guessing correctly.

Newcastle responded gamely with a dazzling run of passing. Owen broke down the right side of the Lazio defense, cut into the six-yard box and drew the ball back for Shearer, who drilled home the equalizer. Owen and Shearer hooked up again with a nice one-two that sprung Owen for the go-ahead goal in the 38th minute.

It looked like a one goal lead going into half before another bizarre play changed the tenor of the contest. Harry Shearer weaved through the box and drilled a powerful shot at point-blank range off of Lazio's keeper. The ball ricocheted off of Peruzzi, hit Dabo in the face and lodged in the net for a crazy own goal. 4-2 Newcastle at half.

The second half opened with Newcastle still in fine form. Harry Shearer was cynically dumped about 35 yards out, dead center in front of the goal. Hugo Viana played the free kick short to Dyer, who pushed the ball ahead and lashed a daisy-cutter past Peruzzi extend the lead to 5-2.

Newcastle did well under intense pressure for the remainder of the game, yielding only one fine goal to E. Fillipini shortly before time.

Great game as always, Mo. This one had everything but the kitchen sink!

Parade Of Draws Continue For Man. City

Post by Zeppo »

Manchester City FC 1 : 1 AS Monaco FC

Manchester City hosted AS Monaco in their first home match of the season and overcame an early goal from Chevanton to earn a draw, their third splitting of the points in three games.

Chevanton's goal came in the 8th minute after some sloppy defending left him alone near the top of the box. Monaco enjoyed the bulk of the chances from then on, but the City defense did well to pack the box and block shots. Despite some golden opportunities in the first stanza, City's final touch failed them throughout.

The equalizer came late. In the 83rd minute, Barton received a throw-in from Mussampa and sent in a long cross all the way across the box. Sibierksi found himself on the end of it, and falling backwards, sent a soft but well placed header back across the face of goal and into the far side netting. Chevanton had a chance to steal the points with a free kick from about 20M, but his attempt sailed over the bar.

Man City 1 : 1 AS Monaco

Monaco: Chevanton (8')
City: Sibierski (83')

SoG 12 : 11
SoT 5 : 5
Corners 2 : 4
Fouls 5 : 1 (2)
OffSide 0 : 1
Poss 50 : 50

no bookings
no injuries

Heck of a game, Jared. I really should have gotten one in in that first half, but hey the lag was pretty non-existant in the second. I'm amazed you never found that second goal, you had me scrambling quite a few times. I must've blocked four or five shots in the box. I need to create more free kick chances near goal, something I didn't do once.

Good luck the rest of the way, and I'll see you in the second half!

Speaking of the second half: I failed to post a reminder that yesterday was the deadline for first half games. No one will receive any forfeits at this time, as for the first time in league history, everyone has played at least one game through this stage of the season, and everyone has posted. I will get the second half schedule up this afternoon. I prefer that people not play two in a row v. the same opponent, due to injuries and suspensions, but once we get into the second half of the season, that become y'alls choice. I'd rather people get the games in than worry about that stuff. Just be sure to have the correct home and away.

Thanks to all for continuing to make this league something special. It keeps getting stronger and stronger thanks to you guys!

Good luck, and play fair!

Match Report

Middlesbrough 1 Newcastle 4

SOG 6, 22
Tar 6, 14
FK 6, 9
Cor 3, 4
Posses 48, 52

Red Card: Quedrue (MFC)

Yellow Card: Shearer (NUFC)

Scoring

Middlesbrough Viduka 15'

Newcastle: Shearer 36' 79', Owen 41', Parker 70'

No injuries

Several very fortunate bounces saw Newcastle past fellow English side Middlesbrough. Paul Viduka opened the scoring on 15 minutes with a precise shot from the top of the box. Shearer responded in the 36th minute by blasting a shot off of Mark Schwarzer with so much velocity that the ball still ended up in the side netting.

Michael Owen put Newcastle ahead for good in the 41st minute on an even luckier play. Shola Ameobi's long shot spun off the post. In diving for it, Mark Schwarzer spun around the nearest Middlesbrough defender and in doing so left the ball lying in the mouth of the goal. Owen merely pushed it across the goal line for a lucky tally.

Newcastle added to their advantage in the 70th minute. Newcastle had won a corner and Middlesbrough's clearance only got as far as the top of the box. Scott Parker barged through his marker and struck a wickedly sharp volley into the upper 90'. The match got heated after that, first with Harry Shearer earning a booking, then with Quedrue earning a straight read for taking down a breaking Michael Owen. Shearer added the coup de grace in the 79th minute after Owen broke down the shorthanded defense and slipped a ball back through the 6-yard box.

Great game, Pigpen. I don't think I've ever seen a more one-sided game in terms of lucky breaks. That said, I hope it doesn't even out in the second game of the season :) Good game.
