Will there ever be a True World Champion in any sports?

Post by Zlax45 »

I strike up this question because the 76ers lost to FC Barcelona yesterday in an exhibition game continuing the trend of North American sports losing to European competition. I know with the current set-up int he NBA that there will never be a true World Champion but why not have a series between the NBA Final winners and the Euroleague winners?

I thought they did that since the Michael Jordan days, something called the McDonald's something or other? Or have they stopped doing that? Either way, the NBA teams never really took it too seriously, coming as it did in the summer. I imagine with the WC tourney this year, they may not have had that tourney, but they've tried it in the past.

Well it was the Sixers. :P

Looked like they played International Rules, with the closer 3-point line.

The Barca team hit 10 3-pointers including a 4-point play in the stretch.

I can see an international team get hot, shoot the lights out and beat an NBA team. If our national team lost to Greece (and gave up a lot of 3-pointers to other teams), why would a mediocre NBA team not have the same problem?

They used NBA refs though, I recognize the names from the box score.

There's a huge difference between world championships involving national teams and club sides.

The world tournaments involving soccer clubs aren't recognized as true championships. They have less stature than national or regional tournaments.

World championships for clubs in any sport will only happen if they're economically viable for all involved. It's hard now because all sports are approaching the limits of how many weeks they can play per year. International play would have to be lucrative enough for participants to forego a week or two of other competitions. We'll see more international tournaments in the future due to continued globalization but it's hard to see them replacing something well established like the Stanley Cup or European Championships as the top goal for a team or their fans.

Maybe once there is a so-called "space-plane" With current commercial airliners, there's no way.
