Hockey Night In DSP

On the Sens game tonight on TSN they've been talking about this. The new owner has first rights to taking a team to Hamilton, may even consider Kitchener-Waterloo, and apparently also is getting lawyers to check if the NHL "territorial rights" will hold up in court........

Heard some of the analyst's comments too. I mean if the team continues to lose money it doesn't just make sense for the new owner to stay put. And that's why I mentioned the legality and wording of the paper work will be key to any transaction. Bring in the fact that this country is Hockey crazy and anything can happen. Anything...Gangrel wrote:On the Sens game tonight on TSN they've been talking about this. Well the local sportscasters in Pittsburgh don't seem to think the team will be moved with the new owner but we'll see.Gangrel wrote:On the Sens game tonight on TSN they've been talking about this. The Hawks started tonight too so it's officialy here for me as well. So far, so good too. After a quick start by the Preds (2 goals in the first 7 minutes) the Hawks scored 3 unanswered to finish the 1st period. Here's hoping they can hold the lead. The Preds look very good and should contend for the top spot in the Western Conference. Havlat and Handzus are already paying dividends as they've each scored a goal. Last seasons late acquisition Sharp has their other tally. Go Hawks!laurenskye wrote:RED WINGS START TONIGHT! AH HA HA HA HA!

The Flyers failed to show up in Pittsburgh. I guess they plan on opening the season Friday night. I think we're in for a long season. We still have dinosaurs on the blueline, our best goalie has a bum hip, and our other goalie is named Robert Esche.
Perhaps the terrible preseason was a preview of things to come?

I wouldn't panic yet. 4-0 is terrible, but the Flyers have outchanced the Pens at least 2 to 1. Sure, Esche has been mediocre at best, and the PP certainly needs work, but this game could easily be 4-0 Flyers if they had gotten a few breaks. Fleury has also played out of his mind thus far.Sully wrote:The Flyers failed to show up in Pittsburgh. I guess they plan on opening the season Friday night. I think we're in for a long season. My son and I watched the first period, and sorry to say, Sully, but the only word that sprung to mind when watching the Flyers' defense in its zone was "plodding."Sully wrote:The Flyers failed to show up in Pittsburgh. It is only one game, mate. Look at Toronto. Ottawa blew it out of Air Canada Centre last night, and the Leafs rebounded tonight to whip the Sens at Ottawa, 6-0.
Take care,

The Hawks won a wild one tonight. Last year it was routine to give up 6 goals to the Preds but it wasn't routine to put up 8 on them. The Hawks finally have offense and the defense should improve against teams that aren't as stacked as Nashville. Big win to start the season. I'm very excited to see what the Hawks can do this year.

I know it's only one game but wow the Penguins looked really good tonight. They have better depth this year and it showed with them getting good play from all 4 lines and will only get better when Malkin is able to play in a couple of weeks.
Fleury was outstanding in goal, Jarkko Ruutu looks like he will be a very good addition to the team, Jordan Staal played great in his first game especially on the defensive side and in particular on the penalty kills.
Football and hockey being played at the same time again, it's the most wonderful time of the year.

Solid win in Hockeytown by the Canucks vs Detroit 3-1. Luongo was strong and so was the rest of the team . Gone are the days of just one offensive line or two, for the Nucks to have success this year all four lines have to click. If they cut down on the penalties, win two is within grasp tonight in Columbus.
How about the little brou-ha-ha at the end of the battle of Alberta PK? You think this two teams are ready to go on Saturday in HNIC? Rollie was solid too.

It's not hard to outchance another team when you have 10 power plays to 4, including 2 5 on 3's and another 4 minute minor penalty! I thought the chances were pretty even when the teams were at full strength. The Pens outshot the Flyers 10-8 in the 3rd with the teams at even strength. Not that it matters though as it is just one game.Naples39 wrote:4-0 is terrible, but the Flyers have outchanced the Pens at least 2 to 1.
I was truly impressed with the Pens play, especially the 3rd and 4th lines and specialty teams, and grit (at one point hits were 21-6...thought I was watching me play NHL 07 vs. the CPU) and if Malkin is as good as advertised this team is going to be so much fun to watch.
Well I don't think all the PPs are such a bad thing when talking about the Flyers chances. The reason the Pens took so many penalties is because the play was always in their end 5on5 in the first two periods. That was the most defensive posture I've seen the Pens play since the Kevin Constantine days, though you have to give them credit for their team defensive play. Of course Fleury deserves a lot of credit too for his spectacular second period.
Overall there were some bizarre results last night and it's hard to know what to make of some teams. Ottawa getting destroyed at home versus what looks to be a lousy Leafs team, and Chicago putting in 8 the Preds, who some are picking to go to the finals....
Will be an interesting and unpredictable season to say the least.

I'll go on a limb and say this Lee. In two more years they are the team to beat in the NHL, the only doubt is whether they'll still be in PITTS. Crosby, Malkin and M.A. Fleury will be the leaders.Leebo33 wrote:I was truly impressed with the Pens play, especially the 3rd and 4th lines and specialty teams, and grit (at one point hits were 21-6...thought I was watching me play NHL 07 vs. the CPU) and if Malkin is as good as advertised this team is going to be so much fun to watch.

Ah, James, that was a minor dust-up in the Battle of Alberta. You're right: Saturday should be fun.10spro wrote:How about the little brou-ha-ha at the end of the battle of Alberta PK? You think this two teams are ready to go on Saturday in HNIC? Rollie was solid too.
Calgary looked slow tonight. It seems to have the same problem as last year -- no scoring other than the Iginla line and too much reliance on Kiprusoff.
But I think the Oil will make nearly every team look sluggish this year. I agree with Kelly Hrudey -- Edmonton has the deepest, fastest set of forwards in the NHL this year, bar none. Drew Remenda said Edmonton could have eight 25-goal scorers this year, and it's very possible.
The Oil could have that many scorers if MacT continues to play five forwards on the power play. That was really strange, but effective. Most NHL teams now are using four forwards on the PP, but that was one of the few times -- if ever -- I've seen five. It's great for offense, but I hope Stoll and Sykora are working on their defensive responsibilities during practice because having two forwards on the point could lead to a lot of short-handed scoring situations for the Oilers' opponents.
I was really pleased to see Sykora play well in his debut, the two penalties not withstanding. The guy is a Swiss Army knife, as he can play in any position. He already seems to be clicking with Hemsky, which is a scary, good thing.
Much has been made about the departure of Pronger, Peca, Spacek and Samsonov from the Oil, and it's legit. But Peca did nothing during the regular season, and Samsonov wasn't nearly as good as advertised in Edmonton. His good play came in spurts.
Spacek was solid, no question, but Ladislav Smid played a very solid game on D in his Oilers' debut. Nice to see Daniel Tjarnqvist get a goal from the D line, too.
You don't replace Chris Pronger, no question. But there is a silver lining. Pronger got 30 minutes of ice time per game last year and was such an anchor in every situation that the team looked to him constantly. Now the load will need to be balanced more evenly across the Oil's defensive corps.
There's no way the current defense can compensate for the loss of Pronger, who I thought was the best player in the world -- period -- last spring. But I don't think the blow will be as bad as thought.
It still humors me that most predictions have Calgary finishing among the top four teams in the West with Edmonton just sneaking into the playoffs. If the Oilers get solid, steady play from the defensemen and Rolie/Jussi, their nitrous-injected offense will do the rest.
This is going to be a VERY fun season.
Take care,
PK

Don't forget a young man named Jordan Staal, who supposedly is better than his big brother Eric at this stage.10spro wrote:I'll go on a limb and say this Lee. That's true PK, I saw him in a preseason game and he looked even more fluid than his brother. They got a good bunch of kids there, Mario will see his investment pay dividends very soon.pk500 wrote:Don't forget a young man named Jordan Staal, who supposedly is better than his big brother Eric at this stage.10spro wrote:I'll go on a limb and say this Lee. It's all because of the wonderful experience and training they received at their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.lexbur wrote:How "BOUT them first-place Blue Jackets?!?!?!

They are an exciting bunch this year, and they certainly could give a few teams some headaches. Any team that has Zherdev, Fedoror,Modin, Carter, Nash a young and upcoming G. Brule can definitely light the red light like they did yesterday. Their weakness is in the crease, but they should aim for the playoffs this year.lexbur wrote:Yeah, that and the $7 million it took to sign Zherdev. If his first game last night was any indication, him and Nash are gonna be fun to watch this year. They sure had a great night!
You know who's HOT? How about Atlanta's Goalie? This is another team that can cause some headaches in the east.
