Gran Turismo HD charging for individual cars, tracks?

Post by pk500 »

Major ripoff alert, if this is true:

http://digitalbattle.com/2006/09/20/gra ... l-rip-off/

What a joke -- About $200 if you want all cars and tracks for GT HD for the PS3.

Sony shoves the hot beef up gamers' asses again, if this is true. I can't believe Sony would be this bold -- and stupid.

Take care,
PK

What a rip off! Grand Turismo is really very over rated.

As if people need another reason to pass on the PS3.

Sony's gotta be kidding me with this one. Let's hope the report's inaccurate.

Gotta hope this is just a rumor gone wild for Sony's sake. Maybe, and that's a big maybe, if the game was a pack-in with the system it would make sense as an appetizer to the full game, but this just sounds dumb.

You know what else sounds dumb? Kutaragi saying that search results on the PS3 will be 120% accurate. Maybe that's just some Japanese phrase that gets lost in translation, but somehow I doubt it.

Oh yeah, here's a link to the just-completed TGS keynote from Kutaragi--posted with 120% accuracy:

Hopefully, it's not against this board's rules to post some *good* PS3 news: 20GB PS3 reduced to $425 in Japan, with HDMI included. Price drop NOT confirmed for North America, but HDMI is reportedly in all PS3s worldwide now.

Don't worry you'll be able to buy all of these things on Sony's FREE online service :)

I've never seen a company try to screw the public over so much in a relatively short amount of time. Don't drop that soap!

There's nothing wrong with posting good PS3 news. It's just that you'd be hard-pressed to find ANY before this news about the price drop in Japan.

You're not seeing bias here. You're seeing a reflection of the concerns of the gaming community at large about the PS3.

Not just where you are, guys - it's already delayed to mar 2007 over here in Europe, and that's if manufacture goes as currently planned. It's struggling to generate any positive coverage at the moment.

There are some pics of GT from the TGS show but I'm too lazy to post a link right now. Just go IGN or something. Graphically the game does look pretty sick (much better than say Forza 2 or Project Gotham for example at the moment) but then GT has always looked good. It's the other stuff that has been annoying about it.

Any word if there actually will be a damage model? Ridge Racer 7 won't have one on the PS3, according to a hands-on at Joystiq.

That's what always makes me feel a bit edgy about writing the ps3 off- the artistic style. For some reason, I just feel a bit more inspired by the Japanese take on graphics and realism. Of course, it means nothing if the AI in GT is mediocre, but they just seem have a more interesting style than Microsoft, who seems to have a more bright colored, in-your face look to their games.

But, there's little chance I'm going to be able to fork out the type of cash that Sony and GT are requiring at the moment.

The last bit of your statement is key for me personally. I never thought Sony wouldn't have some great looking titles....although I think each system will have its own great looking ones and that ultimately it will be a bit of a push. As good as I think those graphics are, they just aren't $600 worth of good for me at least. Sony has priced the experience outside of just a fun little romp for me and I've played games all my life and I know my story isn't uncommon. We'll see how the fall plays out.

Sony's Tokyo Game Show Conference Reveals Few Details

Posted on Thursday, September 21 @ 21:22:57 PDT

Many people were looking forward to Ken Kutaragi's keynote speech to fill in the many blanks, and with only 2 months to go until launch, give details. Unfortunately most of the speech was filled with technical details on GPS, GMS, shopping, banking, networking, and so forth. A few noteworthy things, demos will cost $1, you will be able to download 16bit games (MegaDrive Genesis, and PC Engine TurboGrafx) over the network, and share them with friends. During a short Q&A it was revelaed that the 20gig version will now also feature HDMI, and will receive a price reduction (from 535 to $430) in Japan, as a result of consumer complaints about the high price.

Demos will cost $1? What happened to free online? Could they be any more clueless?

It gets better....

Why won't the US price of PS3 be lowered along with the Japanese price?

We started by calculating the price for the US and European territories by looking at what consumers considered the 'magic price points'. In these territories, the prices we announced were very well accepted. We then converted that price to yen without giving consideration to 'magic price points.' The feedback was not supportive, so we lowered the price.

Retailers in the US "vastly prefer" the 60 gigabyte, $599 model, he said. Well, of course they do. They make more money off of more expensive things.

Will the PS3 include component video cables in the box?

I'm not sure, but I think the answer might be "no."
Unfreakingreal comments about the pricing..."very well accepted"? Wow...

I don't like any of these developments.

That said, I don't think the GT downloads for sale scheme has been officially confirmed, although Famitsu is a reliable source.

But one possibility is that they do this in Japan but not in other regions. They have some PS2 games over in Japan for which they charged to play online. So maybe they realize that any costly microtransactions wouldn't fly over here. However, I think they will try microtransactions here one way or another, which is one of the reasons they're including the hard drive.

On having to pay for demos, I can understand it in one sense. If these demos are hundreds of megabytes or over a gig, the bandwidth required to host such downloads is costly. If PS3 users aren't paying a flat subscription, someone has to pay for those bandwidth costs. It should really be the publishers though. But maybe they want to centralize the place from which to get these downloads.

PS3 is suppose to support browsing. So it would be technically feasible for publishers to set up their own FTP servers and users can go to each site to get them. But I guess it's not as easy and convenient for novice users as having one central site and having the downloads go to the right place in the hard drive so that they appear ready to play. I'm thinking of computer users who can't always find the stuff they downloaded on their own hard drive.

As long as you don't have to pay a subscription and online play is free, I can live with it and be choosy about the downloads.

As for the price, well we've had a few weeks to absorb it. Either they'll sell or it won't. I'll try to preorder but I'm not waiting in any lines. When the X360 HD-DVD add-on comes to the US, it will likely be priced around $200. So the whole combination will be around the same price as the PS3.

It's really the price cuts which will tell the tale of this war. Both X360 and PS3 are reportedly poised to go to 65 nanometers in the next year. How quickly after launch they will push price cuts remain to be seen but looks like they're already in a price war in Japan.

Big difference you're leaving out is I don't have to buy the HD-DVD, I really don't have that option with the PS3 do I?

Getting back to the price issue...

Since Sony has announced that all 20gb versions will come with hdmi, it seems that it could be a very reasonable alternative to the premium version.

In Canada, it works out pretty close:

360 Premium: $499
20gb PS3: $549

Kind of changes things, no?

Not really, because Sony has no announced alternative to Xbox Live.

Yeah, if you are a hardcore online gamer than xbox live seems like the sure bet. Me, I don't play much online and don't really factor it into my decision.

I think part of the reason I'm still so interesed in the ps3 is that I've been playing xbox games for the past 4 years and would like to be able to try out some of the titles I've missed out on during that time. So, besides being "next gen", I'm also getting a whole new list of games and developers.

Good point, Fanatic. That was one of the interesting points about the Wii for me since I haven't owned a Nintendo machine since the NES in the late 80s.
