sportdan30 wrote:A couple things concern me with 2K7. First, the ref stops play much too quickly. There are times I don't want a face-off, but play is stopped before I can pass it to one of my players. Is there a slider for this?

Also, if you're playing on default All-Star, check out the CPU sliders. They're so completely different than the Human sliders. What's troubling is that the passing accuracy sliders along with a couple others are set way low, yet the CPU passes extremely well. I'm just wondering whether or not the sliders have any effect. Anyone with any input or suggestions?

That's all for now. Time for bed.
If you're playing on the sim setting, the Goalie Freeze Time is reduced to zero, I believe. You can just raise that notch or two. I kind of like it the way it is now. If there's anyone from the opposing team in the vicinity, the ref stops the play immediately, just like in real life.

I'll take a look at the passing accuracy for the CPU today, but I've also noticed this.

I think the main reason I don't like the shot stick is so many times when I came down to take a shot, my guy was pointed away from the goal so the shot went in the direction he was skating.

I'll be taking this one back today and picking up NHL 2K7 instead.
I'm pretty sure you can switch back to the button interface. If you're enjoying the game, you might want to give that a try.

Correct. They even mention both the SS interface and the Classic control interface in the manual.

Is there anything regarding faceoffs in the manual (and I use that term loosely)? I can only win a few a game.

Lee,

There is nothing in the manual, but the key is to time the drawing back of the right stick at the right time. It gets difficult because the referee will vary his puck drop (which i like) and you need to be on top of it. You can usually tell when he is actually going to drop the puck because he raises his hand slightly higher when he's actually going to make the drop.

I love how faceoffs are handled in NHL 07.

Also, I still find myself looking for that speed burst button. :)

I have a feeling with some slider settings, this game is going to be VERY sim like for my tastes.

Is it just me or is 2k7 more bland in it's full version than on the Demo? Something is weird about the full version...I'm not sure what it is. The gameplay is still there...and awesome, but something is bothering me. I've got 07 coming in the mail today (love the 1 day turnaround from gamefly)...so I guess I know which is better by comparison rather than speculation from a shootout demo.

I'll tell you what it is, stale. Great game, lots of sim style hockey, but same ole song and dance. Nothing wrong with it at all, but the "wow" factor isn't there. I could be wrong, but that's the feeling i'm getting anyway.

For those of you that have played both games, in which do you think the AI is a tougher opponent? I'm not talking about the AI more effectively mimicking actual hockey strategy and tactics, I'm talking about it actually being able to beat a human player with some regularity.

I'm a long time fan of the 2k series multiplayer gameplay, but I always thought it was pretty poor for solo play.

Thanks.

Right. Last year's version was more like a 2K6.5 when it first debuted on the 360 but this version, is more what the 2K6 should have been on the 360. Gameplay hasn't changed (which is good IMO) but I like the new skating engine. If you're looking for that wow factor, I've never seen that before , you won't find it in this game. Like I said earlier, the most innovative part of this game is in the camera angle. Love it.

As much as I enjoyed playing the 2K series the last couple years, I'm really close to taking the plunge on EA's offering this year.

It sounds like it has a high fun factor, even if it doesn't best mimic real life hockey, reminding me of my experience with NHL 2002 on PS2.

I'm going to contribute my impressions of EA's game as this is the one I opted for, despite enjoying both demos and being an exclusive 2K gamer since 2k3.

I played about three solo games before venturing online for about 5 matches.

Initial impressions were underwhelming as I suffered from a serious case of 2K-reconditioning. Setting the game to AS and 10 minute periods out-of-the-box I was thoroughly outlplayed but still managed a 4-4 score only to cough it up in OT with a goalie giveaway. Warning to those prone to these gaffs, you can get pounced on pretty badly with ill timed passes from the goalie. The CPU outshot me by a large margin, something like 70-30. It's hard to recall how well-conceived the CPU attack was as it was constant and game speed was set to default (too high). Also, I found myself missing the defensive options of 2K's game series.

The second and third games were much better as I reduced the game speed and began to learn EA's defensive controls which are better than I expected based upon the reports that they were the same as last year.

Poke checks and hooks are performed with the RB/LB buttons respectively and diving stops akin to 2K's are accomplished by pressing these together.

Face buttons are used as follows.
X and B set defensive/offensive pressure sets, respectively. Offensive sets include "protect lead", "normal", "aggressive" and "all out attack". Defensive choices are similar wih "protect net" and other choices available. As these are cycle fields and not increment/decrement type controls, it is sometime possible to spin past the one you want. However, I found myself using these more than I did similar controls in 2K's series.
Y is used to "slash/start fight" though I used this sparingly and did not encounter any fights.

Reducing the speed I was better able to get the type of gameplay I like from the CPU and I believe I split the next two games, although the scores elude me. I still think some slider work is needed and, like Leebo before, I can not believe that EA chooses not to implement a period time that is adjustable in single minute increments. I do believe a playable game can be achieved at 10 minutes, but something closer to 7-8 would proabably be ideal.

Venturing online was a mixed bag, but enjoyable overall. Out of 5 games I played, three were very smooth but two were noticeably choppy so YMMV with respect to gameplay experience. There is a nice history maintained of your recent matches including whom against, what teams were used and what the final score was. Your cumulative ranking and stats appear to be used to generate a rank that assigns you opponents based upon tier.

Goal scoring both online and off has been a rewarding feeling. I have scored a couple of one timer goals but many more come from setting up in good scoring locations and either beating the goalie or generating a fortuitous rebound. One plus is that player skill has a *definite* impact on gameplay. In one online game where I was Tampa bay versus the Islanders, Lecavalier and St. Louis combined for some smooth skating and wicked shots while a tying goal from my opponent came off a beautiful deke by Miro Satan. There apear to be certain dekes that can only be pulled off with higher skill players as in another match I twice pulled off a little hopping deke with Heatley that I didn't see at any other time.

One thing of note is the crowd. I feel the atmosphere is pretty well done. I need to play a couple more games but I seem to recall the crowd getting louder in the closing minutes of a tie game, almost like they were hanging on every shot and save.

Also, in three of my online games, the score was within a goal and twice my opponent pulled their goalie and once I did. I gave up the empty netter, but my opponents did not and did manage some last minute offensive pressure. I even had to call time out in the closing minutes to get my top line rested. All of these things were new for me in online hockey games.

A couple of nitpicks. I like the number of pucks that leave the rink either straight off of sticks or caroms off the post. However, I believe the delay of game call for this happening in the defensive end is missing. Some have gone into the player benches which IIRC is OK, but one went over from the defensive corner and I believe it failed to catch the glass, though I would need to see it happen again.

Another is, like mentioned elsewhere, I can not find the option for substituting a backup goalie in the middle of a match. Perhaps someone else has answered this, but if the option exists, I haven't found it.

Alright that's all for now. Catch you guys later.

Nice impressions, G7.

So from a position of underwhelming, did 07 improve to overwhelming, or merely whelming? ;)

Seriously, although you made it clear that you thought the game was better than your first impressions indicated, do you think it still falls a notch below 2k gameplay?

I've been warming up to NHL 07 after more time with it. In some ways, it reminds me of the promise NHL 04 had. The puck movement, whether passing or shooting, feels a lot more authentic than in 2K. It also feels like you can score in a greater variety of ways. It's not that you can't score with a slapshot from the point or a rebound goal in 2K7, but that it doesn't feel like the best way to score- one timers are still your bread and butter. In 07, it really doesn't feel like one technique is any better than another, and you can score off slapshots, wrist shots, deke moves, deflections, one-timers- you name it.

Oh, I should add that it is mandatory that you knock the speed down by at least two notches. Not only does that improve the gameplay, but it seems to smooth out the frame rate some.

2K7 is still the smoother game, and in some ways, it's clearly superior- the camera angle is better, there is more in the way of dumping and chasing and boardwork, and the AI does a better job of setting up an attack in the offensive zone. But the puck physics, the shooting and the stickwork are noticeably better in 07.

I picked up both games yesterday and I'm happy to report that we have 2 good hockey games this year!

2k7
2k is the culmination of 5 years of work. The presentation is the games weakest point. The new camera angle is nice but the cinemotion with music is only worthy of playing once in a while. The commentary is barely average and nothing new from last years game. Pretty much the presentation was cut and paste.

The graphics offer mixed results. The cutscenes and intro stuff look like ass compared to NHL 07. The players are way too skinny, especially the goalies, and they just don't look right. Fortunately the chainmail jerseys from last years game are gone. The action on-ice looks great though. The animations are fluid and the framerate is fantastic. The players even look better in-game.

Out of the box this game needs major slider tweakage. I found myself completely disabling the speed burst because I liked that from NHL 07 so much. I had to drop the speed of the game way down as well. If you've played 2k hockey you've played this game (that's not a bad thing unless it's growing old for you). It plays identically to the version they released last season. The only differences are some slight graphical touches (no more chainmail jerseys), an excellent new skating model, and the cinemotion camera angle and music. Crease control returns and is a fun little diversion in small stretches.

Bottom line: If you eat, drink, and sleep 2k hockey you'll love this title. If you are growing tired of the same engine give NHL 07 a try.

NHL 07
NHL 07, IMO, is a breath of fresh air in hockey videogames. The new controls translate very well to gameplay (of course that won't be the case for everyone) and it is a complete blast to play.

The presentation in this game is top notch. The commentary from Thorne and Clement is excellent and the cutscenes between plays are jaw-dropping. The default camera angle is solid. The goalie animations are unmatched but the skating animations are not as smooth as 2k's.

The graphics in this game are stellar. The cutscenes, as mentioned, are jaw-dropping and the in-game graphics are adequate. The framerate does not compare to 2k's but it is not so bad that it detracts from the gameplay.

The game plays better out of the box than 2k does. I haven't touched a slider other than game speed and I've been seeing a lot of cool things happen. The new analog controls really open up the offensive play and options. Playing defense isn't nearly as much fun but it's not bad. The puck physics are nicely done. I've seen some pretty awesome things happen with the puck in my limited time with the game. Passes go offline as do shots. I was able to play a game with Jimmy online last night and it was immensely fun online. I think that's where this game shines the most. Playing against a human opponent really changes the feeling of the game and it really does feel very sim-like.

Bottom line: If you're a total die-hard 2k fan you'll likely think this game is pretty cool but you'll want to go back to your 2k. If you're looking for something fresh and new in a hockey game you owe it to yourself to try this game.

My initial feelings after playing both games last night is that I like NHL 07 more at the moment. I think a lot of that has to do with 2k being largely the same and 07 trying something different. 07 makes you unlearn how you've played videogame hockey for years and to some that will be a major turnoff. For me, it's a major turn-on.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Definitely more than whelmed with the game at this point ;)

I was 3-1 going into my last online game of the night, when I found myself trailing 1-0 midway through the third. A nifty score on a backhanded rebound got me out of my seat to sit closer to the action and I managed a second score about 30 seconds later to take the lead. Setting my defense/offense to sit back/protect lead I thought I could cruise for the final 5 (game) minutes but a bad line change sent my opponent on a partial breakway. Deking *wide* right my goalie over-commited and on second effort dove head-first only to have the shooter bounce it off his arm and in for the tying goal. It was one of those deflating moments and I started thinking about overtime and how I might approach a shootout since my opponent was playing his breakaways better than me. As luck would have it, he iced the puck with less than a minute left and on the ensuing faceoff my D drilled a shot on net that ended up on the stick of my winger for a rebound GWG. Fist pumping ensued, so yeah, I'm definitely digging it so far.

One caveat though, that I can't believe I forgot to mention, is both of the choppy games had a strange reset occur where in the middle of action the period was reset, and both teams lined up at center ice for a faceoff, erasing about 30-45 seconds of action. There seems to be a little talk about similar things on the EA board, but I didn't follow too closely.

Scoop and G7,

I don't have 2K7 to compare with and doubt I will ever try it simply because I don't have enough time for two hockey games (other than the NHL 07 PSP versions).

I find your comments spot on about NHL 2007 and I am having an utter blast playing video hockey again. Last time I can remember having this much fun was NHL 98 for PC and NHL 94 for Genesis. This is the first console version since the Genesis that I am really enjoying over the PC version. I am hearing the PC version is an abomination for 07, so I am glad the 360 is so good and the new controls add a whole new dimension to video hockey....

Thanks for the 07 impressions guys. I was gearing more towards the PC version based on what happened to Madden 07 and also because it's $20 bucks cheaper but looks like I'll give the 360 version a try this year. One question: How do you find the CPU AI overall and what level are you guys playing?

Out of 8 or so games in Rookie difficulty, I have won just two games. The AI is tough on Rookie and Pro (played 3 games on that level, lost all of them). Part of the problem for me is simply getting used to the defensive controls and not putting my players out of position when I control them.
