I didn't see anybody mention anything about the lead blocking controls, but this improvement rox!!!!! There is nothing like leading the way for your rb as the fb and then changing back to the rb as he gains the edge.
I have not been to impressed with the previous years changes such as vision cone, but I feel like a kid in a candy store with this feature. Reminds me of playing in school and leading the way around the edge.

I played a couple more games tonight while I watched the Steelers and some other stuff on TV and I am totally impressed with the gameplay. I like it better than NCAA 360 and it's actually pretty close to Madden 360 in my book as far as realistic stats, AI, and fun factor. Game stats are totally awesome on All-Pro and 13 minute accelerated clock with a few minor slider adjustments (a few boosts to the CPU for pass protection and interceptions a few ticks down for both).
The biggest downside I can see is the lack of the a pass throw away button and the punt returns suck (think last year's Madden on Xbox/PS2). At least Madden doesn't have that momentum bullsh*t. It's also possible that the fatigue bug exists in this version as I have never seen a CPU substitute except for injuries, although the player's energy levels do go down over time. It's not a huge deal for me on PSP because as long as the CPU is running the ball well I could care less how many rushes they have and I usually substitute some of my players periodically.

This game blows away Madden 06, it is pretty much a comparable experience to the console, which is really impressive for a handheld game. My only complaints so far are the bugs that have already been mentioned (got bit by the swapping pass icons in my last game
) and the fact I can't seem to run play action without getting sacked. Part of it is the fact that I have a tendency to call PA in the wrong situations, but the other part is that my line gets bum rushed every time I seem to do it as well. Since I play with the Seahawks, I like to use play action a lot, but my inability to do it regularly frustrates me a bit. Anyone else notice this, or do I just suck?

I have used play action for some nice gains, but I only use it when I can absolutely and positively handle an 8 yard loss. I also audible out of it if there is any sign of a significant CPU blitz.
Snate, I'll check my settings to be positive, but I really haven't made that many tweaks. All-Pro, 13 minute quarters with acc. clock, defensive pass assistance off, CPU pass blocking up a few ticks, interceptions down a few ticks for human and CPU. I am considering boosting the CPU running just a few ticks as most of my games recently with random teams have resulted in about 3.1-3.6 ypc. The best tweak I've done so far is increase CPU pass protection. I still get 2-4 sacks a game, but it gives the CPU time to complete 50-70% (upper range is only against a good percentage QB like Peyton or Brad Johnson).
I'm so happy with the game I may stop reading posts at OS that may reveal something that will ruin my experience
I'm only half-joking. This is right there with MLB The Show as far as the best portable sports gaming experience IMO.
Thanks for the tip Snate on the precision passing throwaways. Short is probably the way to go. I've made the mistake of trying long and if your receiver isn't close enough to the sideline there is too good of a chance it will get picked.

Just a quick note to chime in on the general praise. Even from my limited playing time, I can see that EA has really fine-tuned the PSP engine since last year's half-hearted effort. The obvious improvements to graphics and game speed bring it up to my original expectations for the series' handheld experience. I think the MLB 06 comparisons are pretty much on target.

Scoop, the only thing that worried me about NCAA in the few games I played before I mailed in my copy today was the lack of QB accuracy on default All-American. The QBs were like 3/14, 8/26, etc. against me with most completions being long TDs. I'm hoping it can be fixed with sliders because it reminded me of NCAA 06 on Xbox *shudders*.

After 2 days with this, I think this may be the best version of Madden this year. It is a definte improvement over 06. I should also thank EA for leaving the running bug in NCAA (and not fixing it in time). Becasue of that bug, I was able to hold off NCAA until Madden came out
Quick thoughts:
- Fantasy draft is messed up much like the rookie draft in 2k5. The 1st round is nothing bu HBs and QBs. The second is always DTs and DEs.
- I am glad that we have alternate jerseys, but you can't see what they are prior to gametime. You have to select them by name only, with names like alternate 7.
- I am also glad that you can edit players equipment AND ratings.
- I've seen some new animations I never noticed in Madden before. On one fumble, the OL and DL players flubbed the ball around for a few yards until someone was finally able to pick it up.
- I've read a about a few possible glitches (fatigue not working, Colts getting a delay of game all the time), but I have not seen any of them prove to be true. So far, no NCAA running-type glitch.
- Nice to see some new plays, especially on the defensive side. The Pats have some whacked formations, just like in real life. They have a 2-4-5 that is neat to play with and see from the opposing side. It adds some variety and character to the teams.
Overall, I'm pretty pleased so far. For me, this game is more fun to play than the Xbox version. Yes, I did get the XBox version, but only because I got a free Logitech cordless controller with it. The XBox versoin is going up on Ebay tonight. I keep the controller, and it amounts to getting a cordless controller for about $15-$20.

I love the game and have played it a lot, but I have *never* seen a backup RB carry the ball unless it was an injury. Not sure if that is a "fatigue" bug or not, but something's wrong. It doesn't bother me much though. At least the CPU *does* run the ball quite frequently and effectively.matthewk wrote:I've read a about a few possible glitches (fatigue not working

I'm going to look at this some more tonight. I only had a few minutes during lunch to try it out so farLeebo33 wrote:I love the game and have played it a lot, but I have *never* seen a backup RB carry the ball unless it was an injury. I do recall seeing Faulk in place of Dillon, and Dillon wasn't injured. It was a weak formation, which Faulk is not part of by default. Unless it was because it was 3rd down that he was put in.

I did some more tests, and fatigue is working. I played a game as the Packers, running Green as much as possible. On more than 1 occassion, Davenport was subbed in. One of those times Davenport stayed in for 3 straight plays before Green came back.
I did adjust the sub in/out numbers to 95/90. Although fatigue does work, I don't think it works very well. Everyone other than HBs seem to always stay above 90%, even on sustained drives. This holds true for both sides of the ball. I would have liked to see certain positions tire to the point where they would be at 75-80% after a long drive.

Is anyone else having troubles passing to the flats. There doesn't seem to be a camera that shows you the flats, at least not until you've been sacked. Is ther some sort of trick or button to scan the sides? It's strange that you'd have this kind of problem on a screen that is essentially a min-widescreen TV.
My other problem is getting stuck to blockers on defense. This has always been a "feature" in Madden, but it's been real frustrating trying to play as a DE. Then again, maybe that's an accurate sim

This game is pretty awesome, I have not been addicted to a football game since 2K5... Anyway, I love it but I have not been able to play 1 single game online. Everytime I connect a game, it disconnects before the game starts. Anyone here actually played a game successfully online?
As far as the receiver icons being mixed up, I noticed that the icons that get mixed up most often (or exclusively, but I cannot confirm) are the L/R shoulder buttons. It seems like the R becomes a L and then back to R (or vice versa), so if you remember the play and pay attention, usually this is not a problem. I don't recall ever seeing a O, X, Triangle or Square being wrong once....

Yeah, this is the trick I use and it works great. NCAA has a better default camera, but you can't zoom out like that and then snap the ball so I like the Madden camera much better as a result.snate wrote:But the key trick is to press the coaches cam button to pull the camera back and press hike before camera zooms back in. Works very well. You can also turn the camera as well.

I was wrong, one of the L button was mislabeled as Square, just noticed it last night. Oh well.....WillHunting wrote:As far as the receiver icons being mixed up, I noticed that the icons that get mixed up most often (or exclusively, but I cannot confirm) are the L/R shoulder buttons. Next up, finding sliders to help the constant fair catches on punts.
-Matt
I'd love to find something to help this, but I don't think it's going to happen. I used to have a "house rule" last year on the Xbox version of no sprinting on punt or kickoff coverage. I may have to bring that back.matthewk wrote:Next up, finding sliders to help the constant fair catches on punts.
It's really one of the few things wrong with the game IMO.

I may have found a way to at least lessen the problems I was having with my defense and getting locked on to a blocker. I changed the controls from advanced back to easy, and it helped my out a lot. Now I can simply use the triggers for moves on the DL. I find this has improved my play quite a bit.
The only things still bothering me about this game are the special teams coverage and the 2k5-esque fantasy draft logic. Oh, and not being able to actually see what alternate uniform I'm selecting until the game starts.
This has been a nice compliment to 2k5 on the XBox for my football fix. The load times are no worse than the PS2, the graphics are nice, and for some reason I think the overall presentation is better on this than the console versions. Plus, it has all the options of the PS2/Xbox versions.
