Real Madrid 0 Werder Bremen 2

Good battle between the two teams. With the score 1-0 in the 78th minute, a breakaway by Real Madrid would have surely led to a 1 on 1 with the keeper but for a last second sliding tackle from behind by Pasanen. Now, it was a pretty brutal tackle and ole Pasanen was correctly shown a red card. A close up shot of Coach Azpaco revealed what appeared to be a tear trickling down his face, most assuredly due to the sacrifice of Senor Pasanen who will now miss the next game.

At a rousing drinking session after the game coach azpaco spilled some wine on a napkin and used his unbeknownst -(sorry if that's not a word) up to this point anyway- Oregami skills to fold it into the shape of a little heart that he awarded to his new hero Pasanen - a tiny wine soaked purple napkin heart - and there was much rejoicing.

I'd like to give props to stcloud who was fun to talk with and played a great game.

Great and fun game! Maybe offline I can generate something that resembles an offense :)

My only question is how does a guy with a high ranking get a Tier 1 team?

He should play with Djurgarden or something :D
Yeah Good Game Cloud you took the early lead but Adriano is too damn good in this game. He had all of my goals and would get it stolen and still run with the ball.

If I would have known that higher ranked guys get high teams I would have taken lower team I thought everyone got T1 in D3. Only really play Co-op so league games get a little confusing when your not playing with someone else.

4-1 Adriano-4 Ronaldo-1 Goal

Schalke 04 1 Newcastle 3

SOG 12, 21
Target 5, 16
FK 5, 3
Corners 1, 10
Poss. 53, 47

Scoring

Schalke: Kuranyi 76'

Newcastle: Shearer 52' 69' ; Owen 90'+

Injury: Emre (Yellow cross)

Newcastle picked up where it left off last season with a win over a tenacious Schalke side. The scoreline flattered the English side, with Shay Given's man of the match performance denying several quality opportunities for the German club.

The first half was positively frenetic, with back and forth play that was dazzling but utlimately fruitless for both sides. Shortly after the break, Harry Shearer converted one of Newcastle's many corner chances by volleying a wicked shot into the upper left corner of the goal. Schalke's keeper, who made several sensational saves in this match, was unable to do anything with the strike.

Schalke attacked with even greater verve after the goal, but left themselves open to another goal form the Newcastle captain, who pounced on an inch-perfect Owen though ball for his second. Kuranyi pulled one back for Schalke, driving home a powerful header in the 76th minute, and the match was tight down the stretch. Owen put away the insurance goal with a terrific header, justifying great service from Paker who came on for the injured Emre.

Great game, FB. If Given hadn't been so good it would've been even closer than it was. I never felt comfortable until Owen's header. Good luck.

Great game Rob! It was a pleasure. Schalke's scoring troubles continue. I think a formation change may be next.

Any ideas on what actually controls how tightly the back line plays on the opposing forwards? I obviously need to tighten that up a bit too. I never got into doing defensive strategy shifts, so it would be nice to learn about that.

Guys, just a reminder that there appeared to be some interest in a League Cup for this season. Unfortunately, unlike the league itself, the Cup is dependent on everyone getting their games played. We can't move from round to round until all games in a round are completed.

Just to get going, here is the result of the draw for the 16/17 game of the Inaugural DSP WE League Cup. The two teams were randomly selected from the Third Division:

  • AC Milan v. Arsenal
AC Milan is thus the home team. The game settings are the same for the tourney as for the league games, including season (summer) and weather (random). Try to get this game in as soon as possible so we can go ahead and get the brackets drawn for the Round of 16. Make sure to write down the goal scorers, as well as any bookings (yellow or red) and injuries (yellow or red crosses); we should have something set up at the SGN League site to report Cup games, but we may not have this 16/17 game over there, so note those stats here (actually that should go for all games, League and Cup, as we all know. . . Cool ).

There is a very good chance at this point that we will cancel the League Cup. That decision will be made later in the week.

The roll is a 2, so Emre misses no time.

Zeppo,

Why don't we do a draw for the octo-finale now, and have one team drawn to the winner of the AC Milan v Arsenal match? That should hopefully make getting in the 1st round games earlier and easier.

Good Suggestion Jared it would be like FA Cup when they do the draw and they other teams still have to play the Replay.

Zeppo do you put the results in or are we supposed to put it in on SGN.

Well, we havne't got the tourney brackets done yet over there. For the 16/17 game I think the result should just be posted here. The rest of the tourney, we should be able to post results as we normally do over at the site, in the separate League Cup area.

Jared, good idea. I will go ahead and do the first round draw, if not today then tomorrow. I will also try to get the first round bracket up at the site so the octofinal games can be played and reported.

Newcastle 3, Monaco 2

Monaco went up early, with a 2nd minute strike by Meriem. Newcastle had many chances in the first half, most of them shots going just wide. Finally Owen scored off a rebound to tie it up 1-1 at the half. In the second half, Owen scored, again off a rebound to make it 2-1. Monaco had an excellent chance as Evra was in completely alone against the keeper...but he struck the post and had nothing to show for it. Shortly after Owen made his hat trick, with an audacious chip-volley that was (again) off a rebound. Monaco had its chances to come back, and Chevanton scored in injury time. But it was too little, too late as Newcastle took the important 3 points from homestanding Monaco.
