Keith Jones joins Flyers broadcast crew
Gary Dornhoefer retires...nice guy but about as entertaining as picking out socks in the morning. Jones has done a good job in the studio for CSN and OLN. Should be a fun season.

In Chicago, Handzus brings a huge piece to the puzzle of the Blackhawks hopes to get back to the playoffs this offseason. Handzus could be a Selke candidate, and is virtually impossible to out muscle and get off the puck. He is a great faceoff man, penalty killer, and can play all three positions. He obviously was hurt last year but I like his days ahead in the windy city.Sully wrote:Nobody has mentioned the Flyers picking up Kyle Calder from the Hawks for Handzus. Great deal for the Flyers.

Well, I'll definitely miss Calder but I just want to see the Hawks make the playoffs. If Handzus helps that will be great. I like what the Hawks have done so far during the offseason (except for getting rid of Pat Foley) and can't wait for the season to start.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

I love the Handzus/Calder trade. Sure, we're giving up our best penalty killer and faceoff man, but we're adding a winger with speed, and a nice scoring touch. We were loaded through the middle, and it was only a matter of time before someone was traded. With Handzus' name being mentioned in the past, him being shipped out wasn't too much of a surprise.
Now, we've got to get Gagne signed. I feel much better about this team with the addition of guys like Calder, Geoff Sanderson, and Randy Robitaille; and the subtraction of guys like Brashear and Handzus. We're much faster up front.

You make good points, Sully, but are the Flyers really loaded up the middle given that Forsberg is recovering from major surgery and Primeau probably won't ever play again? He got his last concussion in October and he's still not free of symptoms 10 months later. I guess if he retires the Flyers can pick up a decent center from somewhere using some of his salary.
I guess I'm considering that Marty Murray, Mark Cullen, Ryan Potulny, RJ Umberger, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Keith Primeau, Petr Nedved, and Peter Forsberg are all listed as Centers. A lot of people outside of Philly forget that Umberger and Carter were playing out of position for most of last year. Trading Handzus for a true scoring winger is what this team desperately needed. Forsberg is hobbled, but only needing surgery on one foot was a pleasant surprise. He's trying to be ready for the start of the season, but I'd expect him to miss the first month.Feanor wrote:You make good points, Sully, but are the Flyers really loaded up the middle given that Forsberg is recovering from major surgery and Primeau probably won't ever play again? As for Preems, he was skating yesterday. I think he's feeling the pressure from the organization now. They were patient with him last year, but enough is enough. They need a decision. Deep down, I'm sure Clarke wants Preems to retire, so he can ink Gagne to a multi-year deal.
The Flyers may be involved in the Carter or Leetch sweeps if Primeau does have to retire. The Flyers will wait, since Primeau is what they really need and want back.
P. Bondra may go back to WAS and finish his career there.
Here's the TV schedule for the 06-07 season.

Someone's been reading up on Eklund over at hockeybuzz.com.10spro wrote:The Flyers may be involved in the Carter or Leetch sweeps if Primeau does have to retire. The Flyers will wait, since Primeau is what they really need and want back.
Take his rumors with a grain of salt, since he's wrong about 99% of the time.
I tried reading that Eklund for awhile, and found the same to be true. You're better of finding team-specific forums. That whole hockeybuzz thing is a mystery to me. The archiving is lousy and clunky — it's so much easier to just find the bloggers real blogs and read their stuff in a visually navigable format. He ought to just link up to the sites and let the whole bloggers' paradise thing go ...
Which reminds me: I know I've been digging around for good hockey blogs, and it isn't easy. There's a few I found throug offwingopinion, and I go to the islandermania forums, but does anybody else have any good ones kicking around?

The Phoenix Coyotes are close to signing veteran forward Owen Nolan to a one-year contract. Coyotes management is awaiting word from the team doctors on the final results of a battery of tests that have taken place over the past three weeks. Nolan, an unrestricted free agent, last played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2003-04. The 34-year-old was recovering from surgery on his right knee for over a year.
I Stumbled On (nitfy little Firefox Add-On) this link to someone's list of "worst hockey logos ever" and thought some of the commentary was pretty amusing:
