Definitely had a great first impression, but it's kind of tough to find out what the hell I'm supposed to be doing at any given time. No pause menu, no objectives screen, nothing. I'd roam around and blow sh*t up until it said the mission was complete.

No instruction manual makes it a bit tough, for sure

More on the Super Weapon Gurantsu mentioned:

What is it?
The Super Weapon is a huge Sal Kar mech, in the South Cemo Oil Fields of Gazi, an area near their capital. It is armed to the teeth with explosives, and has an ultimate attack where it opens its top up and fires a leathel hail of Homing Missles.

How do I kill it?
You don't. EVERYBODY does. It's impossible to get more then 1/20 of its full health off along, but the damage carries through from all squads into one total. Keep in mind you're going to lose quite allot of credits, unless you're the Squad that delivers the final blow.

Wheres it weak point?
When you start they'll be a small cutscene with nice music, showing the Super Weapon blowing away about 15 Morskovion ACVs. It has the following attacks:
Howizers on its sides,
Long range sniper rifles on its sides,
Turrets on its Cockpit,
A huge ass 360 Degrees Homing missle launcher. The top of the mech opens up, 4 huge pads filled with missles come out, and they all point at a different direction: North, South, East, West. The only way to NOT die is to stay by a COMBAs or a mountain, and hide behind it when it breaks out the weapon.
It's weakpoints are: The cockpit at the very front, and the large stalk that the Missle launchers are mounted on when it comes out. Aim at the cockpit, then at the stalk while its loading up. But remeber to keep your cover.

It says I didn't do any damage!
You did, but all squads are going to have to attack it to get real effect.

How do I damage it?
Rifles work well, but only do weak damage.
Heavy artillery? does ALLOT of damage. I bet a team of 4 HGs could take off a large amount of health.
Snipers and Scouts are out of the question.
Defenders? Those cannons will do allot of damage.
You don't need a tactics commander. Its only your Squad V the Super Weapon: No Defending squads may join the battle to help the Super Weapon.
So use Defenders cannons, Heavy Gunners Artillery, and Soldiers rifles and machine guns and rockets.
If you're going Heavy gunner: Proceed to Combas D (Don't change your base! Make it Base number one!), and stay by it. Fire a few practice shots to see if it hits, and once you have the right Co ordinates hide behind the hill nearby and shell it from their. Poof, it can't reach you. Soldiers? Stay at Combas D, and hide behind it to avoid the missles. Fire yer rockets and the like at it. Defenders? Same as soldiers, but use your cannons.

There is a very, very dark video of it here. Bad quality, but you can see how massive this thing is.

Geez, things like this definitely push it towards a Action/MMO feel.

Holy cow that thing is massive!

And you can't beat the Benny Hill theme.

Of course, it makes me wonder what awaits us when we take the battle to the other nations?

I haven't had a single freeze, offline or on, in about 20 hours of play.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that this may be one of the titles that 'pushes the system,' though, like GRAW and Oblivion, and might help reveal the problems with 360s getting ready to sputter out anyway.

GRAW was blamed pretty hard with the first big round of 360s going out, and I've seen similar complaints raised with Oblivion. I haven't had a problem with either of those, either.

EDIT: Actually, I now recall one freeze when getting ready to move into an online game from its lobby. The game froze at the 'connecting' screen, and I had to power down. That seemed like a server connecting issue thing, though. And it only happened one time.

I'm thinking my last question wasn't posed as a question so much, so I'll try again...

Is there a way to get objectives or something, or a way to read that somewhat confusing map and graphs deal on screen? Other than trying to memorize the briefing, I'm not really sure on what to do. Is there some sort of in-sortie screens I can pull up to kickstart my brain as to what to do next?

Generally you can get all you need to know by reading the info down in the lower left on the briefing screen, and then listening to the verbal instructions given to you once the mission starts.

Often, however, when you have specific objectives or when enemy targets are spotted, they appear on the map as numbered colored markers. That could be what you are missing without having the instructions.

I don't know if this plays into the 'sim' aspect of the game, but no, there is nowhere you can go to see the objectives spelled out for you once you've started your mission. Many missions boil down to 'go here' or 'destroy this' , though, and 'this' is often shown on the map with a colored number.

Was there any specific mission where you were having difficulties?

I unloaded BF2 and picked this up. Looks very, very deep and fun. Can't wait to try it out.

Ahh....colored number is probably what I was missing. There were a ton of different icons, and I had no legend or anything. I got the tower capturing stuff and all of that, but specific objectives eluded me.

So I'm reading up on the Chromehounds forums, and there is a small discussion about the elections in each country. I have voted in one, and if you read each canidates "platform" you get an idea that the type of weapons and upgrades you will see are based in part on the leader; one is more defensive minded, one prefers to take the fight to the enemy, etc.

Also, evidently in the first war that took place, after the Sal Kari president was elected, he was then killed and a minister took over. All of this comes over the news wire. (This kind of stuff I don't mind reading, but the constant donations to the country drive me coo coo when I have to wade through them).

This game has some pretty cool MMORPG elements to it that help the immersion. I know at some point we'll be heading to another country, but I'm growing fond of our little place in the desert.

And it's 500 foot tall "bodyguard"

Yeah, we'll switch eventually, but I figure we'll stay in one spot for a while to buy up a stock of parts, and allow all newcomers to find the squad. I finally got to see my anti-missile defense system work. Too sweet.

I also love the perspective you can get after you've been destroyed and you are running around on the ground. Some of those fireworks shows can be awesome.

Yeah, I definitely felt very small after I got nuked last night. I started just unloading on the scrap heap I had created at the base (I blew up some smaller mech that still took quite a pounding before it died)...I just kept running around and firing nonstop at his smoldering junkheap.

I can't imagine trying to dodge that stuff. I was even trying to step on somebody when I heard "don't squash me!!!!" and realized it was a teammate. That had to be a solid pucker-factor moment right there from the little tiny guy's perspective.

Gurantsu, man, sorry we missed you! The Metal Despots made quite a good showing for themselves tonight in the War. We went undefeated, and had our first 'Real" Squad vs Squad battles, 4 on 4.

Millennium, GameSeven, Zeppo and I barely squeaked out the first one. One of the enemy went lone wolf early, and since we had a commander we were able to see that and snare him, with the boys pouring in fire. They had a nice comeback, though, destroying everyone but Millennium, and he was left without much in the way of ammo. Their last hound made it to our base, and basically ignored Mil's hound in an attempt to destroy our HQ. Mil then squatted right in front of the guy to lay a mine, upon which G7 hurled his little pilot..

...BLOWING the last enemy hound up! :)

The second human match we won a little more handily. The enemy played strict base defense, and so we took advantage of that, moving around to capture the COMBAS towers. We forced them to make the move, then, if they wanted to keep us from a COMBAS victory. Mil and G7 engaged them close to their base, and although both went down, they took two of the enemy with them and did a great job of bloodying the others. I parked my TC, so I wouldn't be detected on the radar, and as time was starting to run down, watched them roll right past me and towards Zeppo's ambush. They were better armed then Zep, but he did a great job of drawing fire so I could sneak behind them and spike the trailer to death. Then it was two on one us, Zep kept his man pinned down behind a tower, and we basically played with the guy until he ignored me and I was able to get my spikes into him.

Guys, feel free to elaborate on what I didn't see!

Squadees who weren't there, you can read all about it in our history.

Good gaming, guys!

I'm sure Mil was plenty softened up cuz I pumped 2 double-barreled cannon shots into him at point blank due to our lack of color coordination

Looks like Sal Kar has been wiped out of War #6 leaving only Tarakia to attempt to stem the tide and break Morskoj's perfect record.

*sigh* These things should really last more than 24 hours. At this rate, it will be War #12 if we don't convene before Thursday

Web, is there still room in the sqaud? And if so, what kind of hound does the sqaud need? Soldier, scout, sniper?

Thanks.

Wow, sorry I missed it! I was on for a short time, but had to jet to take care of my daughter. My wife was away for the night, and my duaghter got upset for a while that mommy was not there to tuck her in. I should be on tonight though, probably around the usual time of 10-1030.

It's awesome how the squad with better tactics will rule the day. It's especially cool since it sounds like you guys had to improvise quite a bit, but still came out on top.

I have been messing around with building a soldier mech, so that will give me another option for the next time we're on.

Lots of room in the squad, Pig, and feel free to create whatever style of hound interests you. It's easy enough to come up with multiple designs, and we have a pretty good spread of types right now. Maybe a speedster scout type, though, as I don't think anyone has come up with one of those yet.
