From a post I made over at OS(I have the PS2 version)
Basic impressions after just a couple of games online and a few games offline.
The passing game in general seems to be very effective. I really haven't tried the long ball into coverage too much, but one on one deep you better have great stick skills ore you're toast.
Running between the tackles is difficult. You can break some really big gainers to the outside and on the option plays, but between the tackles has been very difficult for me to execute so far.
The animations and overall look of the ps2 version is top notch.
Kick and Punt returns feature a new semi-first person view that really limit your view of the field. I've had a couple of long(er) returns but nothing jaw dropping.
Hit stick is better implemented than last year as you don't really have that long delay between using it and seeing it happen on the screen.
Defense allows for a lot of pre-snap adjustments. Individual player assignements etc etc etc. Also "playmaker" commit run / pass is in the game.
The momentum doesn't seem to be nearly effective as last year with all the really crazy stuff that would happen just because of momentum. I mean, you can tell it's in the game I just don't think it's overdone like it was in 2006.
In my brief time with the game I'm having a really good time wth it. I haven't done recruiting and a lot of other dynasty stuff because I've never really been into that. So, even if I were to look into it I wouldn't be a good source for impressions. I'm more of a quick game / online kind of guy.

Are PS2 and PSP versions compatible? Can i start a season and transfer between the two systems? Anybody know the answer on this?ddtrane wrote:I know this is the PS2/XBOX impression thread, but I hope someone will be getting it for the PSP, at least I wll. damn walmart. I had the game in my hands today and was ready to check out until the walmart register couldn't read the game. guy was going to be nice enough to ring it through but the manager got there and nixed the whole deal.
I guess I could have been more demanding since they had all versions out on the display case but I guess I'll just wait until Tuesday to pick it up.
I did get to see some impressions on maddenmania.com of the psp version and they all were saying good things about it.
I'll probably pickup the ps2 version this year after boom's impressions.

Boom thanks for the impressions. Now it's just a matter of deciding between PS2 and Xbox. I usually stick with PS2 for football games but I might give the Xbox version a try. "
I like you get ps2 for football and wait to hear if the xbox version is as good or better.
I thought last year's xbox version finally was on par with the ps2 version in terms of gameplay and system performance. First time I dumped the ps2 version for the xbox version in 06.

I decided to go for the Xbox version for a couple of reasons. It was 10 bucks cheaper than the 360 (although I wished the difference was more like 20-25 like Fifa Germany06) and also because I also have the good old trusty AR for which I plan to use for the rosters. To me it's imperative in Sports game. Finally, as I played the 360 demo I wasn't floored by the graphics.
Played the game a few times today, a lot is very similar to last years IMO. The presentation is almost identical, same pregame videos basically. My friend is getting one for his 360 so maybe all the improvements went into that one, if any.
My biggest issue is when the deep ball is completed into double coverage. One on one never bothered me that much. Most have said the deep ball is toned down and I firmly believe that with the difficulty setting you are playing. Overall, I must say the deep ball is improved over last years' game. But one on one man you're asking for trouble, especially if WR is rated higher then the CB.

The Hit stick is better implemented than last year as you don't really have that long of a delay between using it and seeing it happen on the screen. Had a couple of fumbles too.
Now I am still getting used to the new punting/ kicking meter which I don't really care for as I haven't punted very far yet and have missed a FG. Maybe someone can post some impressions on the kicking meter too. And on that note I didn't care much for the ZOOM angle as you're about to receive the football, I much prefer the overhead angle to see any open holes and the Zoom angle prevented me from that.
Overall, a fine game, not many dropped passes unless you were hit while catching the ball. Realistic Stats.

I scored the 360 version today as well. I'll post my opinoin on what I feel is the better buy here (based on early impressions) even though it's the current gen impression thread.
After playing just 6 games of the PS2 version (2 of which were online) and 2 games of the 360 version I think right now that the PS2 version is the better game of football.
The animations and control are much more polished. You can feel the weight of the players on the PS2 where while playing on the 360 I feel like everyone is floating on air.
The stadiums in the 360 version are friggin incredible, make no mistake. I love looking at Folsom Field in such great detail. However, the overall look of the 360 version is a little dark. Still, a great looking game.
The PS2 versions graphics are not bad, and to the current gen standard they're pretty good IMO. While the PS2 version will look and play closely to 2006, it is improved imo and feels less arcade like to me. I'm not seeing all the whacky crap that would happen in 06 when the Momentum was really swinging in one team's favor.
I still need more time with the 360 version and really to get used to the controls. Obviously the PS2 version is familiar so it has an unfair advantage coming in. But to call it right now, like I said earlier... PS2 version over the 360.

That's great to hear! Even though I'll be getting a free copy of the 360 version, I plan on doing all my dynasty stuff on the Xbox version. I liked the 360 demo, but like you, I felt the control was a little off and I felt like the current gen versions would feel more precise. You just confirmed what a lot of us already knew.Boom wrote:I scored the 360 version today as well. Okay I'm going to state the obvious and hopefully this is wrong...
NCAA for the old consoles was broken. Last year's game had messed up stats. It had far too much emphasis on long plays. All the plays that had to deal with quick passes, curls, slants, routes over the middle flat out didn't work like it should. Some of the run plays were broken as well. (Mostly AF so they don't count). Most importantly I was tired of seeing 10-35 for 300 yards. That happens in college football but not like it happens in the game.
I think they can polish up the stats and improve other parts of the game. But from playing the demo these are not the same games. I just don't see how they could address a lot of the problems we had with NCAA since it had to do with the dated engine.
I think its a case of familarity instead of a better title. I haven't played it yet, so on Tuesday I could make that call. From the demo, I think it plays the best football around, yes better than NFL 2k. It's not perfect but the nuts and bolts were good.

I am with JRod. I just can't believe that the current gen versions on the old engine will miraculously play without all of the old problems we have seen in the current gen engine dating back to 2002. If a smaller development team managed to fix all of the problems evident in 2004 2005 and 2006, it would make them either miracle workers or would seriously call in to question the development teams at Tiburon for the last few years.
I could be wrong, but it will all shake out over the next few weeks. It will take a week of hard gaming to really test out these new versions.
Personally, I like the new engine. It plays differently than the old engine - and I am tired of playing the same game year after year. And while I could play the PS2 version, there is no way I could go back to the Xbox controller after using the 360 controller. Sports games and white and black buttons were never a good combo.
To me, the best thing about the demo of the 360 version is that I am seeing the QB throw bad passes when throwing on the run or off the wrong foot. Gone are the days of running to the left and feeling pressure and winging the ball 45 yards to an open receiver on the right side of the field. I have actually started using the cone because it has helped my accuracy. I also like the fact that I don't have time to check down past my first 2 options. Most college QB's don't have the ability to check down to their third or fourth options, and it is good to see this handled in the game. I imagine it is really evident in Heisman mode. Is this true in the current gen versions - because it is a good step forward?
I love rolling out and seeing an open receiver and overthrowing them because I throw before setting my feet. I also love feeling pressure and throwing a screen pass that actually works for a 5 yard game. I also love being in the same position and trying to throw and off balance screen pass to a receiver outside the cone and having it picked off. It gives me hope that when my starting QB goes down that I will see a big drop off with my backup. In previous versions that was never the case because user ability far outweighed the skills of the actually QB - so if Vince Young went down you could still compete against Ohio State for 3 quarters with the backup. With the cone and the lower ratings, that might not be the case this year - or so I hope. I hope this is true in all the versions of the game.
I have also heard complaints about the option being to hard in the demo. Well, it should be hard. FSU is not an option team and UF showed us last year how difficult it is to change offensive philosophy's on a team in one year. In past versions, I could play option with a team like FSU or USC and use my speed to smoke the opposition. If the starting QB was too slow, I would just use the quickest backup and keep going. That is totally unrealistic. First of all, the only reason that the option works at all in college football is because teams are simply not used to seeing it. If a fast defensive team plays with discipline, the option is not going to beat them play after play. In today's game you need an exceptionally talented backfield and a good line to play an option offense and win. And a traditional offense can't simply switch to the option and expect it to work after a few weeks practice. How is the option in the current gen?
I would love to try all the versions as I am a junkie for this game. If it is good for the PSP, it could make me get one of them.

You no longer seen qb stats like this. If anything it's been over-corrected. Now you'll see much higher completion percentages and the shorter passing patterns are much more effective. Most importantly I was tired of seeing 10-35 for 300 yards. That happens in college football but not like it happens in the game.
I've found with the 360 version that if you can just scramble with your qb and buy you some time, your boys downfield are going to be WIDE OPEN. I just don't feel in control of what's happening on the 360.. Sure it looks great, but it's almost like watching canned animations play the game.
Hard to explain and I'm glad some of you are really digging it and think it's "the best football around". In my opinion that's a pretty damn big stretch.
I don't get how people think the current gen (at least on the PS2) is the same game as last year. Obviously it looks a lot like it, but the gameplay has been tuned for the better and if you really play these games and not just look at them it's easy to see.
Here is some good info from Helisan over at maddenmania. He's got pics as well as some video of improvments. He's playing the PS2 version.
