I get over 35 MPG with my Sentra which is better then most cars so I am happy with it and it is not a hybrid. Hybrid's are overpriced rigth now and to see a difference in gas prices you need to do alot of city driving.Sport73 wrote:1999 BMW 328i Convertible.
Older, but still in great shape. 70k in miles and the convertible top is nice to have in FL. Still, I plan to trade it soon in favor of a hybrid Camry or Prius. I've got an environmentalist heart and only use the car to go back and forth to work. I care a lot more about my XM Satellite Radio and iPod integration than the engine, body or anything else at this point.
Anyone with experience with a hybrid? Comments?

That thing with minivans and gas milage is that they do worse than sedans and only slightly better than SUVs. It somewhat of a myth that they are better on gas.
Anybody have the hybrid Ford Escape. I wonder how good those are? What I don't get with hybrids is the car uses gas when it accelerates and electricity when only power is needed. Why are these cars not as powerful even though the car still uses gas to power it?

Obviously because the less gas you use, the better mileage it gets. The less power that is available means the less gas that is needed to run the thing. That's why all of the hybrids are pretty weak from a performance standpoint.JRod wrote:That thing with minivans and gas milage is that they do worse than sedans and only slightly better than SUVs. About to take delivery on a 06 BMW 330i w/ sport package and 18's. I custom ordered it to get the exact options I wanted so now it's on the slow boat from Germany, should be here by the end of the month. Currently driving a 2000 Caddy DeVille DTS that's getting ready to go in the paper.
Wife drives a 2005 Honda Odyssey XL minivan to haul the kids around. She loves it.

I think ppl who say that minivans have good mileage, they are comparing it to SUV (like you said). The thing is, most people who buy SUVs don't go offroad, so in terms of versatility and utility, minivan actually is a better deal since it can hold more stuff, generally alittle safer and have a higher MPG. But practicality isn't the only reason to buy a car, and SUVs are cooler (for most people).JRod wrote:That thing with minivans and gas milage is that they do worse than sedans and only slightly better than SUVs. I laugh at people who talk about needing an SUV for the extra space and then buy an Escape-size SUV. At least those aren't complete gas guzzlers but I know we can fit more stuff in our Mazda6 hatch than fits in the back of most of those SUVs.
It would be funny to see a study done to show the percentage that actually go off-road, not counting parking on grass at a sporting event.
I still remember busting the old leaf springs when me and the old man went off-roading in our old Bronco.

Right before I bought the Z, the 06 330i was the car I was about to buy. I just had to wait for the 06 model to be ready for sales. (They only had demos at the time). Nice car...jondiehl wrote:About to take delivery on a 06 BMW 330i w/ sport package and 18's. My previous bimmer was a '00 3 series coupe that had the sport package. It was almost too rough of a ride though with those low profile tires. I went and test drove the new model last month and was fearful of the same (especially since the sport package now has 18" instead of 17" wheels and they have even less sidewalls) and was shocked that the ride was much more to my liking and ordered it on the spot. I was going to hold off for the coupe to get the new body style, but didn't want to wait for October to roll around to get it and opted for the sedan this time.bkrich83 wrote: Right before I bought the Z, the 06 330i was the car I was about to buy. As for the minivan MPG discussion.... my wife gets close to 30mpg in her Odyssey. It has an ECO mode that cuts from 6 to 3 cylinders when you're not under heavy acceleration. She does alot of hwy driving and not much stop and go, and the 30mpg is nice when gas is costing $3/gallon. I had her in a '02 Jeep Liberty before that because she thought it was "cute" and that pig got 15mpg if we were lucky and couldn't hold as much cargo as my Cadillac.

I just bought a '06 Pontiac Vibe. The Vibe wasn't even on my radar until I asked my mechanic for a recommendation. He said he rarely fixes anything major on them. Has a 1.8 litre Toyota engine (same vehicle as Toyota Matrix and 3Ks cheaper) and Consumer Reports gave it a recommendation rating. I still wasn't impressed until I test drove it. Opted for the front wheel drive instead of the AWD. Mechanic said AWD is totally overrated. I get 26 MPG in town and it isn't broken in yet. Lot of great features without the kitchen sink.
Wife drives 01 Nissan Xterra which has been another good vehicle with good safety features. Not worried about offroad driving as I am about her and the kids in Winter and having a young driver. It's pointless to have a 4WD vehicle unless it has 4WD low.
In my opinion if you can't keep a vehicle for 10 years and enjoy a few cold ones without the worry of a car payment or frequent repairs then it's time to go elsewhere. Chevy just couldn't cut it for me any longer. I'm betting that GMs venture with Toyota and Nissan will bring them back. The other important thing is the Xterra was made in Smyrna Tennesee and the Vibe in California, including the Toyota engine. I would be wary of some of these vehicles such as the Pontiac Sorrent where the engine is made in China. Keep it in the Good Ole USA.

Figure I'd drag this old thread up and post my question here -
I might be looking at purchasing a used car in the $6,000-8,000 range in the somewhat near future due to some changing economics on the home front. Just looking for basic, reliable transportation and hopefully decent gas mileage. Any recommendations?

Those babies run forever and are pretty good on gas. Good, basic wheels. Also, the Hyundai Accent has a 100,000-mile warranty, so you might be able to get into a used one in your price range that still has a few warrantied miles left on it.
Good luck.
Take care,
