Proof that most FIFA officials and journalists are fools (Pt 56)

Zinedine Zidane has won the coveted Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament, beating Fabio Cannavaro by 2012 votes to 1977.

So, let's look back on ZZ's world cup

Group game no 1 - anonymous, gets booked
Group game no 2 - anonymous, gets booked
Group game no 3 - is banned

Has a great game vs Brazil (although their man-marking and tackling is all but non-existent, so plenty of time and space to be had) and a very good game vs Portugal. Final was OK, but time and space a bit less available.

And that gets you a Golden Ball, over and above Cannavaro ? Crikey.

Oh, and FIFA's Screw Up of the Day ?

There is now a massive furore about whether the fourth official (who informed the ref about Zidane's headbutt) did so with the aid of information from the video official, which is not currently allowed. FIFA, of course, deny it, while the French coach is spending more energy on that rather than working out why his strikers are crap.

I heard that's what happened as well. It did take long for Zidane to get his card...**sighs**

And of course, the sports radio morning show here in Philly ripped into soccer. And these guys are Italian! Go fig. They would much rather talk about T.O.'s overrated book. Idiots.

Another thing, I never watched the opening concert because I saw Toni Braxton and immediately turned the tv off. But Shakira was supposedly up there shaking her hips ONCE AGAIN. Someone tell that broad...to just stop.

Why would you want to do that - she can shake 'em as long as she likes for me :)

The big winner was Germany, both on and off the pitch.

I know this wasn't a great match for true soccer fans, but I sat and watched the entire WC final for the first time since 1994 (which also ended in PKs, LOL). I only had a chance to see a few matches due to work, but I really enjoyed watching the matches and feel like I finally "got it."

As for the PKs, it would seem some type of substitution/golden goal rule change along the lines of what JRod suggested would help a lot. I don't think they are a terrible way to end a game, but I agree with Bill that it's always odd to have a game end with something completely different than what you've been doing (like if you ended an extra inning game with a home run derby).

Yesterday the Sox played a 19 inning game and basically you could tell fatigue was becoming a major factor in the game. After the 12th inning, all the guys were tired and kept trying to just jack one out of the stadium. The BoSox had no more pitchers left in the 19th inning. They shoudl have just stopped the game in the 12th inning and done a HR derby.

But, unless you are in the infield, you are either stood about miles from anywhere waiting for the ball to come near you, or swinging a bat on average every 2-3 innings, and getting nothing 70% of the time.

Not exactly the most strenous occupation

Being in the sun for 4 hours in the same place is tiring for me...The game took over 6 hours to play!!!

try being in the field all day when your bowlers are getting tonked around big style, then making 12 runs yourself and getting out to a stupid shot. That's a pithy description of my last cricket outing, a few weekends ago. At least once I was out I could sit on the boundary with a beer and the paper, enjoying the sunshine :D

I didn't know JRod worked for Reuters. :)
Cynical Italians blight World Cup final

This tournament will now be remembered for the second worst final in history, littered by the phony grimaces of pain and anguish on the faces of players as they dived for fouls and feigned one injury after another.

I've always freely admitted that the Italians embellish any physical contact but what pisses me off is the fact that the French players were flopping all over the field yesterday, particularly in the first half, with little contact and nobody except for 34 and myself seems to have noticed.
I am a patient boy.

Funny must be an Italy fan. Article is spot on. Called out Zidane. Called out the Italians. If you thought this final was the best soccer had to offer you are crazy. 8O

Of all the teams I saw, here's my diving hierarchy, with the worst on top:

1. Portugal

B

I

G

G

A

P

2. Italy
3. Argentina
4. France
5. Brazil

Those were the big five divers, to me. Nobody touches Portugal. It wins the Golden Dive Award, hands down.

Take care,
PK

Sure it was far from the best, but I think the final was more entertaining than the 1990, 1994 and 2002 finals.

I think the article writer is a bit of a nut to try and blame the Italians' style of play for Zidane's headbutt, and to not even mention that France's only goal came from a dive in the penalty area by Malouda. Is that not cynical? He tries to claim the rest of the world are sad Italy won, like the rest of the world wanted a team to win that only scored thru penalty area diving and comitted an act of blatant thuggery.

Maybe it wasnt the best final with a phantom penalty, Italy taking the 2nd half off, Zidane's red, and PKs deciding it ...but ya know what...I enjoyed watching it...

Ill say it again...I had fun watching the tournament and I will miss it.
