I just think musicians ought to be musicians and let politicians be politicians. It has nothing to do with whether their opinion matches my beliefs. I feel the exact same way about guys like Toby Keith.

Do you remember when this war first started and all of those liberal hollywood types kept saying that we started this war to steal Iraq's oil? How's that idea working out for them?

You're right, so I will do my best to get it back on track. One of the best albums I've heard this year is the Twilight Singers' Powder Burns. One of the best rock albums that I've heard this year.

It bothers me more when country yahoos try to become President. :D

There are many artists that are more qualified or at least more willing to become political analysts than people that are actually doing the job as political analysts (Fox News *cough*). It's pretty sad when the only people asking the tough questions are comedians and musicians.

I'll shut up now and won't f up the thread. Besides, I'm just an accountant and really shouldn't have the right to express my views unless I'm a politician or a political analyst. 8O

Musicians are artists, and the songs they write are a reflection of themselves and what they see around them. I would hate if musiciana only wrote love songs (Blech!!). How broing would that become? I may not agree with every song, but I can appreciate it when the artist speaks from the heart, and music is the perfect gateway for that.

Movie actors on the other hand should keep quiet :) When I see TOm Cruise in a move, I want to believe his character, but now all I can think of when I see him is him jumping on Oprah's couch or trying to school Matt Lowry on the history of physchiatry.

OK, back to the task at hand....

I haven't gotten any new music in the past couple of weeks, but I have been watching Supergroup on VH1. Like any other "reality" show, this one does it's best to make everything look like its going to be a train wreck. Still, it's pretty cool seeing a little bit inside a varied group of rockers.

The one thing that bothers me is how they keep trying to take shots at how these guys are basically past thier prime in terms of popularity. Maybe it's time for some of this music to get back some respectability. I don't care if a sound is 30 years old, if it's good, then who cares. I think some of the 80s-90s hard rock/metal still holds up today (not all, but some). Why should bands try so hard to get away from a certain sound just because it sounds dated?

Wasn't Metal Month on VH1 awesome. Memories. I know you watched. I watched quite a bit. Highlights for me was the Judas Priest concert (they still sound awesome) and seeing the movie "Decline of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years" again. It has been years since I've seen that movie.

I haven't watched much of Supergroup. I just can't get into reality TV in any form.

To be honest with you I hope hair metal bands do not return. Not that it can be any worse than some of the bands I hear on the radio, but I laugh when I think I used to like Ratt as a kid. They were actually the first band I ever saw in concert.

I would like to see a resurgance of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. I have been listening to these bands alot in the last few months. I really miss bands like them. What has happened to the guitar solo??

Just go see a blues band. Guitar solos are very alive and very well in that genre. :)

I had a recent musical "exchange" with a friend of mine, and one CD that I'm really digging is Nada Surf's The Weight Is a Gift. It's not anything groundbreaking, but it's got the kind of surging pop hooks and quiet introspection that Death Cab for Cutie does, and the faster songs remind me a little bit of Semisonic (a very underrated pop band). It's the kind of album you can't help but tap your foot too.

I also am enjoying the Kaiser Chief's debut album. Again, it's derivative, almost a coloring book of 80s and 90s British pop, but the first half is so good that you don't care it's unoriginal.

Thom Yorke's solo CD is leaked.

It's pretty good. Fairly restrained and kind of reminds me of Sigur Ros and Radiohead blended in that the music is fairly moody and calm. But then again Radiohead kinda has that Sigur Ros sound mixed up in them already.

OK, this isn't a new album, but I have listened to "Southern Rock Opera" by Drive-By Truckers almost non-stop the last three weeks. I haven't listened to a record this much since Ryan Adams' "Cold Roses" in spring 2005.

"Southern Rock Opera" is arguably the best record by DBT, a GREAT American rock band.

Take care,

Agree on DBT's Southern Rock Opera. Their new album is very good but lacks the audacity of their earlier double album. Mrs. Z and I were fortunate to have caught them in a small club during their tour supporting Southern Rock Opera. They were outstanding. There's a torrent out there of a pretty good board mix with the performance of the entire piece in sequence (over two nights).

Back to the present, Cheap Trick's new album Rockford is their best in I don't know when. It's a return to their power pop roots, so if you never got them, you won't like this. But if you still play Heaven Tonight or At Budokan, this album is a stronger return to form than expected from a band making a living grinding it out at Indian casinos.

I've been listening to "We Are Night Sky" by deadboy and the Elephantmen. If you guys get a chance check it out, I'd be curious to hear what others think. There's some comparisons to the White Stripes but I think they're minimal.

I've also heard really good things about the Cheap Trick album from a girl in my office who is a fanatic of the band.

Personally, I'm more interested in the "new" Cash album that arrives in stores tomorrow (7/4).

I need to listen to Southern Rock Opera, I just got a copy but have been listening to the new album instead.

LOL at Cheap Trick, had it in my hand at Best Buy and thought about getting it. The live version of "Surrender" is one of rock's best moments.

Not sure how many people are into Breaking Benjamin, but their new cd, Phobia is one of the best rock albums I have heard in quite some time. Not a bad track on the whole disc. I liked it so much that I went back and bought two of their other cds which are both really good as well. I cannot stress enough how good this cd is. One of the best I have heard in quite some time.

I finally picked up the Springsteen Seeger Sessions album. Just fun as all get out to listen to. I will echo the constant praise of SRO by the DBTs. Great, great record.

More than anything I'm looking forward to the new Hold Steady record this fall. Pick up "Separation Sunday" and I think that some of you guys will find a new band to love.
The sing-along songs'll be our scriptures.

If anyone is looking for a creative rock/pop/alternative album, you've gotta check out Under the Influence of Giants and their self-titled album. They are actually a group from the same high school that I went to, so I thought I'd support them and pick up their debut album and I was pleasantly surprised. It's really like nothing I've ever heard before.

Sitting here watching the Cards game and getting some work done, am listening and getting into the new Beck cd, The Information, on headphones, the way I'm guessing it's meant to be listened to. I liked Mellow Gold, Odelay, and other stuff but didn't get into Guererro much, and can already tell that I'm going to be listening to this one for awhile. If you like Beck, I can't see how you won't like this.

Yep, I dig the new Beck record. I'm also relishing the new album from my favorite female voice in all of music, Shawn Colvin's "These Four Walls."

Right now I cannot stop listening to Boys and Girls in America from The Hold Steady. Just an incredible album, full of beefy riffs and very clever lyrics. It's got the lyrical and musical scope of the best Springsteen records, with the edge of the best Replacements songs. Craig Finn's vocals have been a little hard for some to take, but they seem more in tune with the music on this record than the last. If you like guitar-based rock music, you really should pick this up.

Any of you guys listen to an artist names M. Ward? Just started listening to him a couple months ago and his stuff is really great. I have 3 albums: Post War (his newest), Transformation of Vincent and Tranisitor Radio. Transitor Radio is my favorite but they are all quite good.

He has a sort of early 1900's style that is very unique.

Been meaning to check out the new Hold Steady. Thanks for the reminder.

A couple others I think are worth mentioning are the new TV on the Radio, The Knife, Art Brut, Junior Boys, (great melodic 80's synth-pop), Lupe Fiasco, and if you're in the mood for somthing heavy, check out the new Mastadon record. Best metal I've heard in years.

Yes! Discovered him about six weeks ago on NPR's excellent "All Songs Considered" podcast. I "obtained" "Post-War" immediately, and it's excellent.

Definitely a case of "less is more" in terms of musical style, vocal delivery, etc.

Another recommendation: Robert Randolph & The Family Band's new release, "Colorblind." Ranks right up there with Neko Case's "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood" as my favorite record of 2006.

Take care,
