Damn Italians got the goal they deserved, but in the most unfortunate manner. Grosso did everything but flap his arms like wings as he went down. Still, it was a dumb challenge.

Disheartening that the Aussies couldn't take advantage of the sending off, which I thought was justified. It was apparent that FIFA wanted straight reds for two-footed challenges, and everyone should know that by now. Kewell's creativity and skill were sorely missed down the stretch.

The 1st PK SO session in round two to decide the game between Ukraine and The Swiss. I don't think anyone has scored on the Swiss yet in regulation time.

Worst game of the tournament. That was just aweful. Neither team deserves to go to the next round.

When you play that uninspired its tough to get a yellow card. The quarterfinals had to have a one ugly match-up. On one hand you have the Ger/Arg battle. Than on the the other end you have Italy/Ukraine. I'm rooting for the referees in that one. :D

The quarterfinals haven't started yet.

At least I feel better about the play of the US team after seeing these two uninterested and uncreative teams do their best to back their way into those quarterfinals. Hell, even we were more agressive and attacking than those two, even though we had less than 10 shots on goal for our entire tourney.

I doubt the games tomorrow will be anything as close to as lame, but heck, I've been wrong before.

I said before the tourney that the Swiss might be this year's Greece. Glad I was right, and even gladder that they're gone :)

no way. holland/argentina was worse.

I thought ukraine/swiss first 60 minutes were pretty good. decent chances on goal, a couple posts hit, nice intensity, a lot of running, good hard fairly clean play. last 60 was waiting for penalties.

Holland/Argentina didn't have much riding on it, though. This was a knockout game, but to be fair both Switzerland and Ukraine hit the crossbar with very good efforts.

Good Lord, these officials just refuse to call offsides on Brazil. It's so obvious.

Yeah, both Argentina and the Netherlands had nothing ton play for, and most substitutes played the game, yesterday's Ukraine game was a bore, the only part everyone looked forward to was the PSO. And the Swiss shooters just choked there.

A few offsides on Brazil not called, especially the second goal, but if Ronaldo keeps scoring goals, maybe he should gain a few more pounds for the team, :) .

If Ghana could have finished some of their opportunities that would have been a classic...

The only bad offside call I saw was Adriano on that second goal. He wasn't offside early on that break, as the ball was played out wide where there were two guys well on making the run. He was clearly off on the final pass, however.

Otherwise, I saw at least one Ghanaian in poor position, often on the opposite side of the field from the offensive player making the run, on every one of those breakaways. Fact is, Ghana was trying to play a very agressive offside trap, and simply weren't good enough or disciplined enough to pull it off. Man, but they had some chances though. Dida came up huge a couple of times, particularly on that foot-save off that corner when it was 1-0. Brazil just seemed to go into a shell after their first goal and for a long stretch in the second half. Kaka was crap today, and Ze Roberto I thought was excellent.

Terrible job by the linesman on the second goal. Terrible!

I'm having a hard time picking a side for this France - Spain tilt. On the one hand, I don't like France, Domenech or 75% of their players, and I like the football that Spain's played so far (and their Liverpool contingent as well). OTOH, I don't like Aragones or the racist strain in Spanish football, and Thierry Henry is far too classy to root against with any fervor.

Meanwhile away from the pitch, things take an odd turn in Italy:

Well, so far this game has been the perfect antidote to last night's dreadful 2nd game.

I'm not ashamed to say it:

After the first half dive turned into a PK, I'm rooting against all diving nations. Spain and Italy are quite possible the most "diving" teams in the world.

I'm also rooting for Henry.

I think that was a legit penalty. The defender clipped him with his leg, and exacerbated it by following through with his arm. Especailly at full speed it looked like a foul.

Can't believe that Ribery and Vieira both whiffed on that Henry ball through the 6-yard box!

Spain's defensive organization is excellent, but France are playing like they've never seen an offside trap before :)

Aragones better hope that this doesn't go to extra time.

Joachin is beating Abidal like a disobedient mule.

What a total bonehead mistake by Spain's defender to set up the set play. Spain totally imploded at the end. Just goes to show you can't put too much into early play in the World Cup.
