It was definitely a sketchy call and explanation, at best. To be fair, the play was chaotic and not subject to amount of time that we've had to scrutinize. That said, I'd just as soon not have the game decided by the the margin of that goal, a la the Brett Hull crease goal in the 1999 Cup Final.

Wow. Pisani-on-the-spot. This guy has been a gamer throughout the playoffs. This could be a wild third period.

Great series, didn't really root for one team, but happy a USA team won it all.

Thought the backup goalie for the Oilers played great all series. Too bad they had to go with that 3rd string goalie who cost them that game in game 1.

Well at least the Canes didn't have to celebrate on EDM's ice. Congrats to the Canes. I hope I'm alive to see a Canadien team win it again.

Congrats Canes. EDM will always look back at game #1 and wonder what the heck happened. But they fought hard all along and showed lots of grit and determination. Now let's see who gets the Conn Smythe, my vote is for R. Brind'Amour or C. Ward

Did anyone else want to puke when Bettman started talking about the owner's dream about hockey in Carolina? What an awesome hockey town, they could sell out a game 7.

Bad hockey town or not though, the Hurricanes played a hell of a game and Ward came up HUGE for them down the stretch. Great, frantic hockey played in the third period. Hopefully more people tuned in and liked what they saw.

f*** YOU NBC! WTf, they cut away before the whole celebration was over. Also, the whole celebration and ceremony from the start feeled rushed. Wish they had the finals on OLN, at least they would have post game coverage. ESPN isn't even cutting away, blah.

Congrats to the 'Canes. Laviolette finally outcoached MacT -- when it really mattered, too -- by going to the left wing lock as soon as Ward scored in the first two minutes of the first period. MacT and the Oilers had no answer until the third period, in which they were the better team.

Carolina came out with more jump, more legs, more pressure and WAY more hitting. That was the most disappointing aspect of a very disappointing night -- the Oilers simply forgot how to hit. Maybe it was because the lock prevented the Oil from getting the puck in deep and using their forecheck, where they got a lot of their big hits.

It would be hypocritical of me to b*tch about the lock. After all, it was the only way the Oilers beat the Wings in the first round. Full credit to Laviolette for the shrewd strategic move. It really frustrated the Oilers.

Ward was a just winner of the Conn Smythe. The kid showed up almost every night when he was in the net in the playoffs and didn't have a bad game in the Finals, even in Game 6. And he was superb tonight, especially on that stupendous rebound save on Pisani in the third. Brind'Amour was invisible in Games 5 and 6 of this series, and Staal had his share of invisible nights against Buffalo and in this series.

Clutch performance by Carolina when it mattered.

Maybe tomorrow I'll look back at what a magical fall, winter and spring the Oilers created for me, by first just getting in the playoffs on the penultimate game of the regular season and then pulling off upset after upset after upset in the first three rounds of the playoffs before falling just short in a superb, valiant effort in the Finals with their third-string goalie in net for six of the seven games.

But not now. I just feel pretty gutted right now. It's just sports, so I can't call it any kind of loss in my life. Not at all. But in the perspective of sports and being a passionate, passionate fan, this really sucks tonight.

Thanks for putting up with my drivel the last two months in this thread, boys. It's been fun.

Take care,
PK

Great season. Congrats to the Canes -- and buy a beer for any old Whalers fans you know. I imagine that was tough to see.

Great run by the Oil. Nice to see the contributions of former Islanders Peca and Torres (and Tarnstrom -- although his tenure was short-lived). It was fun reading all the posts from the dedicated fans on the board.

Now, I'm going to go prepare for the Redemption of Ted Nolan, coming to a rink near you in Fall 2006.

Go Isles.

I know that aweful feeling inside your gut pk especially after a game 7. I went thru the same dissapointment back in 94 when the Canucks lost to Messier's team on game 7, after one of the Canucks forward just shot a puck and hit the bar with about 8 minutes left to play. It stings you like a bee and more so when you're so passionate about the sport.

Great series though, and kudos to J. Rutherford for building this team when no one gave them a chance in the pre-season. He drafter C. Ward back in 02 and it payed off huge. No one gave a damn about the Canes during the pre-season and after game 7 guys like Brind'Amour, Weight, Wesley and Hedican finally got a sip at the cup.

PK's still alive!
Sorry for ya man, I was pulling for the Oil. I know all to well how it feels to get close and not win it. Great series though, couldn't ask for more.

Now who wants to trade for some slow, old, used to be stars wearing tattered winged wheels?

PS...there are heavy rumors around here that Detroit is going after Roloson big time.

LS:

You just might get him, depending on what kind of deal Roli wants.

I can't see Lowe and the Edmonton ownership splashing out $12 to $15 million over three years for a guy who will be 37 next season, especially as well as Markkanen played in the Finals. Markkanen just turned 31, and I think he played himself into a starter's job if Roli wants big bucks and moves elsewhere.

I really think Roli will be the Oilers' version of David Cone, a mercenary hired for the stretch run and the playoffs. It just doesn't make sense to splash that kind of bread on a 37-year-old when you've got important young players to sign who could form the nucleus of a very competitive team for a long time.

Take care,
PK

Congrats to the Carolina Hurricanes. They certainly were a tough team from start to finish this season.

Also congratulations to the Edmonton Oilers, a team that no one (except pk) was giving a chance to win in the playoffs. They dominated the Red Wings, and pushed the Hurricanes to a 7th game after being down 3-1. Edmonton and their fans should be damn proud of their team.
