Quite. But weak calls have been made on both teams. Can't say the shoddy penalty pendulum has swung too far in the direction of one team.Gangrel wrote:ya, but some of those penalties are w-e-a-k. Hell, you throw your shadow on a guy and you'll get called for something.
Damn, Staios was one lucky dude not to get a cross-checking penalty at the end of the second. He just leveled Wesley.
The Oil was flying the last five minutes of the second. But Edmonton needs to get more traffic in front of Ward, as it did in the first.
Take care,
PK

What a f*cking game. The Oil held Carolina to just two shots in the third in one of their best 20 minutes of the postseason.
Big props to A. Ward and Weight for returning. Tape, cortisone and massive balls resurrected those two cats.
If Carolina wins the Cup tonight, I'll be very sad for two reasons. One, the Oil lost. Two, no more of the most glorious sport on Earth for the next 3 1/2 months.
Take care,
PK

That was a great play to end it. Did you see when they showed the replay of the Oilers celebrating after the goal? Some kid put both middle fingers up.
We get at least one more game of hockey before we can shift focus to football!

I am a patient boy.

F*CK YEAH! Fernie brings it back to Rexall!
Pack up the Cup, pack up the Conn Smythe and head back to the City of Champions!
Best game of the series for the Oil. Very disciplined, and I was really pleased to see the Oilers dominate physically. Reminded me of the San Jose series, which I still think is Edmonton's best series of the playoffs so far. Even better than Detroit, as the Oil just dominated SJ physically in Games 3-6.
Moreau was the Oil's best forward tonight. Very physical, disruptive and moved his feet very well all game. Ethan Moreau at his best. Torres also was massive, moving his feet and hitting everything in sight. By the third period, Carolina's guys were wary of Torres, who punished Canes' players at every chance tonight. Hard to overlook Fernie for the first goal and the game-winner, too. Very opportunistic and capitalized on his chances, as he has done for the entire playoffs.
Much like the Oilers' other win, in Game 3, I thought Pronger was very mortal this game, but another Oilers defenseman played superbly to compensate. It was Greene in Game 3; tonight it was Spacek. Spach played really, really well, and I thought Tarnstrom had his best game of the series on D for the Oil, too.
Finally, how well has Markkanen played? This cat was supposed to be a liability -- the Oil was supposed to win in spite of him. And Jussi has played superbly, making some big saves in each of his starts. I know Roli was a rock in net for the first three rounds, but Markkanen has played so well that the cries of "How can we win without Roli?" are echoes fading in the distance.
Oh, baby, let's get it on for Game 6!
LET'S GO OILERS!
Take care,
PK

Nope, still alive. Feeling just fine this morning, in fact! Buoyant, even!AcemanPR wrote:pk hasn't had a heart attack yet?
I bet the Oilers dominate and win in Game 6. Then Game 7 the very next night will be very much in the air, as both teams will be pretty whipped from the traveling. Great Game 5 by Edmonton!
Game 7 is Monday, not Sunday. So the teams will have a day to recover from the travel.
Take care,
PK

In a key PP during OT with the Stanley Cup on the line I just don't understand how TWO forwards were about to start the play in Stillman and Staal. Where were the D-men? Was that a Laviolette screw up or line change gone wrong?tjung0831 wrote:I still can't believe Stillman made that pass in OT....talk about a mental breakdown.
i think they had the unit where 5 forwards were on the ice... he had been playing recchi with staal on the PP. we did that in college...i would drop back and play D on the PP along with another kid who was normally a winger.
his biggest mistake was not dressing 7 D....ward has been hurt off and on the entire playoffs...and welsey is falling apart....
is weight out? i KNEW he'd be back on the bench....but i don't think he'll be back...

Staal usually plays point on the power play. Usually Hedican is the other defenseman.10spro wrote:In a key PP during OT with the Stanley Cup on the line I just don't understand how TWO forwards were about to start the play in Stillman and Staal. It really doesn't matter who was out there, you learn in your first organized hockey league you don't make that particular pass. That's the kind of play that could cost the Canes the Cup. It might not look like it yet, but that play could turn out to have "Steve Smith" like consequences.10spro wrote:In a key PP during OT with the Stanley Cup on the line I just don't understand how TWO forwards were about to start the play in Stillman and Staal. Yep. It's become de rigeur for NHL teams to use a forward on the point on PP's. As an example, Alfie plays on the point for Ottawa on a lot of PP's, and Stoll does quite a bit for the Oil because of his ripping one-time shot.fightingcamel wrote:Staal usually plays point on the power play. It only becomes a liability on the rare occasion when the short-handed team breaks out with a man advantage, as that forward isn't used to playing backward skating defense.
Perfect proof came when Pominville blew past Alfie shorthanded to win the Sabres-Ottawa series. Stoll also looked shaky in Game 4 in a couple of instances when Carolina broke out, and Staal and Stillman looked awkward trying to break out from their defensive zone last night when Fernie stole the puck and won the game.
Take care,
PK
