The OOTP forums seem to be generally positive so far.

It's a beast of a game. This new UI will take me a while to get used to. And good lord..the new scouting system is insane. The rook draft = total crapshoot.

From the few threads I have read over there it is a brand new game and some are having trouble navigating it.

Also, there is a 350 page game guide you can download. 8O

Would you guys say that this game is better/deeper/more fun than Baseball Mogul 2007? I've got BM07 and it's pretty cool, but I just want "more" for some reason. Is OOTP the answer?

Finished 85-77 in the 2023 test sim. The game is obviously broken. ;)

Well, the plug wasnt so much pulled as paused. I have every intention of starting it again.

Bill,

I understand that I didn't ask for specific reasons why, but could you get into that a little bit? I've been playing BM for a few weeks now, and I'm just not feeling it...why would OOTP be better? Thanks bro.

Finally got mine to run, after turning the DEP off.

I'm interested in joining a league - I'm worth inviting solely for the comedy value, and also to ensure that others won't have to finish last.

you'd probably turn it into a Cricket league.

Bill,

Sure db.

Mogul and OOTP are obviously both baseball management sims but one is like eating a decent chicken breast while the other is like eating a steak. (Yep that settles it..I need to start dinner)

In OOTP you get:

-A vastly better game interface (I despise Mogul's GUI)
-More stats and stat splits than any game around. It even tracks VORP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_over ... ent_player)
-A much better simulation engine -- Mogul's claim to fame is that it sims seasons lightning fast, which it does, but at the cost of some beliveability.
-A much deeper game manegement model. I thought Mogul's first attempt at a manage mode was fair, but also a bit contrived and the "2D batter animation" was hokey.
-Better finances in term of depth as well as rules (you even get compensation for certain player signings)

In OOTP 2006, you also get the entire world of baseball -- this is where the folks at SI come in. OOTP is now officially the Championship Manager of baseball. Want to play as the GM of a AA team? You can. Just dont be pissed when your clean up hitter is called up. How about a team in Japan? The Dominican Republic? Even Cuba.

The new scouting system is wonderfully detailed. You have a full stable of scouts that you can send out to scour the globe for talent. You also need use the scouts to prepare for the June draft.

It's just a much bigger and better game from top to bottom even though Mogul 2007 was step in the right direction.

Now, if sports management games don't tickle your ivory then I dunno if OOTP will make you a convert.

Thanks Bill...

I seriously am looking for something a bit deeper than Mogul...Mogul was fine, but it just seemed cheesey and generic. Basically it was my first baseball sim and I was comparing it to Championship Manager (soccer obviously). CM seemed like it was much more polished. I'm hoping OOTP is the same way.

Bill,

I know you haven't had it long, but is there any indication that the game has improved in the area of player development? My one complaint with the other builds was a bit too much randomness in development. Guys with great plate discipline would often suddenly become free swingers etc. Now some of that obviously happens IRL, but there was always a bit too much of a disconnect between core skills like BB rate for hitters or K-rate for pitchers and their actual development.

Warning brief threadjack

Bill,

If you're too busy to look at the Head coach code, I would be happy to take it off your hands. :)

blah.. I'm sticking with ootp 6.51a and Puresim 2007. I hate the SI games interface and from what I've read ootp is no different now.

No biggie to me, because I love ootp 6.51a and Puresim handles my historical needs.

OOTP 2006 still has waiver issues, no trading blocks, no shop a player, UI is supposedly too hard to navigate and the list goes on. I really hope Markus improves the game via patches, but until then I'll pass.

I do miss the trade block. I think the interface is much more flexible than anything Markus ever did by himself. How does the list go on, though? I've only had the game for a day and a half and I haven't delved too deep but I already see numerous new features and tweaks that were not in OOTP 1-6 from the way salary is handled, new coaching and scouting to offering draft pick compensation for signings.

Granted, if you despise the interface of CM then OOTP isn't for you. No doubt. I personally think it's very efficient but GUIs are a matter of preference.

I took the plunge...however, how the heck do you create a league with the real players currently in MLB? Do you have to stick with fictional players?

You need to use the Lahman Database.

Page 64 of the game guide discusses this (I think)
