No, it's not. The $500 PS3 has a 20 GB hard drive. The 360 Premium has a 20 GB hard drive. The $500 PS3 has a wireless controller. The Xbox 360 Premium has a wireless controller.
Actually, looks like the $500 PS3 doesn't support wireless at all:

WOW....that is unbelievable. Guess the $500 unit is $200 more than the 360 Core....
If you are going to buy the PS3 buy the $599.00 unit with all the features. It is my opinion that the price is too high and would wait until at least next spring before buying assuming that it does launch in November. At least the core XBOX 360 unit supports wireless controllers and is the same hardware without the HDD. This is a very strange decision to offer two SKU with a lower end model lacking key features like wireless support and HDMI. I also do not think that the Sony Playstation network service to compete with XBOX LIVE will even match the quality of XBOX LIVE despite what Sony says.
C'mon you guys... in your zeal to see Sony fail, you've taken temporary leave of the common sense I know you possess. "Games Radar" is the only site breaking this "story"... a story which directly contradicts interviews with Sony bigs who have said the hard drives are upgradeable. And does it really make any sense that the wireless controllers wouldn't be supported at all? I could buy not packing them in, but no support? How stupid would that be? I smell horseshit... I get the feeling that link will be "disappearing" soon... when the author's dad finds out he's been using the comptuer again...

A Sony representative on the show floor at E3 also emphasized that gamers won't be able to upgrade the memory of the 20GB version; if that's the PS3 incarnation you opt for, you're permanently stuck with a 20GB memory limit.
Amazingly, Sony big boss man Phil Harrison, in a BBC interview earlier this week, insisted, "What we should be clear about is that the functionality is identical in both machines. There is no difference in what the machine does."

At least with the core, you can add the HDD, the HD-DVD unit, and use wireless controllers if you want.

You've already convinced yourself that the Sony's overpriced. Why is this a shock to your system?
Of course the Core needs a $100 hard drive and whatever that HD-DVD add-on will cost.
Anyways, it's probably not packed in but the logic board probably has Bluetooth so if you buy the wireless controllers, they'd work.
Of course the wireless controllers are probably at least $50. I haven't seen any word on what kind of battery (lithium, NiMH, built-in or removeable AA or AAA) or whether they will include the USB charge cable that MS charges $12 for separately.

Not so fast my Sony-hating friend -- both Sony Japan and Phil Harrison speak: the hard drive is just a simple ATA hard drive, easily replaced.

Sony-hating friend...lol. I want a PS3, just not at that price. My 360 will be enough until Sony decides to drop the price whether it be 2 years from now. Is Sony's ATA Hard drive internal? If so, by replacing your drive, will that void your warranty when you open it up?

Who knows? I suspect we won't truly know anything until the thing hits the shelves... there's so much conflicting info.

Thing is, at least the core is upgradeable. You have a choice. Can say that about the "budget" PS3.
It definitely isn't for HDMI. It sounds like it won't be for the HDD (although they've talked about bigger HDD, maybe external ones).
If they deliver 1080p games, they may or may not work over component. However, if you have an LCD, DLP, SXRD -- any digital 1080p panels with 1:L1 pixel mapping -- then you would only be looking at HDMI. Likewise, if you have any interest in the new lossless True HD or DTS-HD audio formats, you have to target the HDMI SKU.
If you have any interest in trying to upgrade the capabilities to match the $600 unit, why not get that unit for $100 more in the first place? Truth is, I think a lot of people complaining about the shortcomings of the $500 unit are looking for reasons to get neither one.
Anyways, it may not be a bad strategy to get the X360 now and wait a couple of years for the PS3 to come down to the $300 range, if your'e fine with the X360 exclusives and have no interest in HDTV movies for at least a couple of years.
But no need to belabor what a raw deal Sony is promoting. Nobody is forcing you to buy either SKU. If they lose market share and third-party support because of these prices, that's their problem.

Remember when Sony critisized Microsoft for offering 2 SKUs? Well lo and be hold, Sony has 2 SKUs. It is this hypocrisy and arrogance that turns people off. If you are going to critisize your competitior for two SKUs, do not be a hypocrite and do the same thing a year later.
I stand poised ever-ready to answer the call for rational debate, as long as Apple is not involved...
So, as an owner of both Microsoft and Sony consoles, let me say that there are a few things Sony is doing right; in fact, it would be hypocritical of us not to acknowledge that:
1. Sony is included a HDD with EVERY console, ensuring that developers will create games with the specific use of this item. Unfortunatley, MS failed to replicate the original XBox' leadership in this area...
2. Sony is COPYING shamelessly. While earning no points for innovation, copying/stealing is often good for consumers. The most powerful console, with a HDD, free integrated online service, motion-sensitive controller, and connectivity/interaction with a portable gaming device is in many ways a hybrid of the best of both the current and next-gen offerings from Sony's competitors. Giving a consumer the best of everything in one package is not a bad idea...
3. Sony has packed the console with features and power. It's not uncommon to hear complaints about what was left out of a console. I've yet to hear that Sony failed to pack as much cutting-edge technology into the PS3 as is available. Blu-Ray, Cell, HDD, Bluetooth, etc. Sony is making an expensive console with EVERYTHING thrown in...
4. The games look good. Even early in development, the games from Sony, EA and others look nice running on the PS3, even months away from release. That's more than could be said for MS a year ago, or even Nintendo (due to inferior graphics power).
NOW, all that said, the criticisms are also fair:
1. It's over-priced. On the day of Sony's launch, a consumer would likely be able to buy an XBox 360, Nintento Wii, 2 games for each, accessories, and 2 years worth of XBOX LIVE connectivity for about the same as a top of the line PS3 with games and accessories. Which would you do?
2. Blu-Ray, while nice, is a cart-before the horse scenario. People don't percieve value in a high-priced console with a storage/movie medium that is in the midst of a massive format war (especially when Sony's track record for winning such wars is NOT good - Minidisc, ATRAC, Beta etc.)
3. There's no ONE THING. MS has XBox Live; Nintendo has the Wii-mote; Sony has ??? There is nothing UNIQUELY compelling about Sony's latest offering other than Blu-ray, which is not the GAMING advantage true gamers seek...Sony is hoping its high-tech, sexy shaped box and industry-leading BRAND will carry it through the next gen, but it may take a bit more this time around.
4. Where are the games? The one thing that made Sony's former console offerings stand out was the vast library of games coupled with high-profile and compelling SONY exclusives...MS has Grand Theft Auto at release, Forza to counter Gran Turismo, HALO & Splinter Cell to counter MGS, Nintendo has it's unique IP's...All in all, there is very little from a GAMEPLAY standpoint that makes Sony's offering a must own vs. the competition.
5. There's no character. In part because of the items already listed, and in part because of design, Sony's PS3 lacks the 'character' of the competing consoles. The 360 is an iPod white, sleek system with a clear montra of PERSONALIZATION, through design, XBL, Marketplace, and the multiple ways to use faceplates, themes, and gamerpics to personalize the experience, MS has created a console with character. Nintendo has the revolutionary Wii-mote, and the library of Nintendo classics we all grew up on. It's light-hearted and fun, and reminds us of why we got into gaming. Nintendo is making the Wii synonymous with FUN FOR EVERYONE. The PS3 is a powerful black monolith. That's it. There's nothing emotionally compelling about it unless your a HUGE fan of DARTH VADER. Sony's PS3 is not warm and inviting, it lacks character, and the console looks sexy but 'evil'. Couple that with a pricing strategy that turns off consumers, and the 'selfish' desire to drive technology other than gaming (Blu-Ray) and the cold, "give us your money" early screens of Sony's marketplace, and you've got a console that has no heart. More than anything, I think THAT is what's killing Sony's PR right now.
My 2 cents...

BINGO.
I think that's more than a little ironic, since in the past you always seemed to be so easily offended whenever people bitched about EA and their arrogance. Welcome to the club.
After all the dust settles, I'll go where the games are, period. If both consoles have the same titles I like, of course I'll pick up the cheaper 360, but I do know if a game like MLB comes out for the ps3 I'm sure I'll try to find a way to get the ps3.
Shoot, who knows. I would love to have both, but it's to the point where I can't afford both of them.

I believe I have mentioned Sony's arrogance at least a few times in this thread and you are just now picking up on that? Um, ok....
I was never "offended" when people attacked EA in the past. However, I do admit taking their side when I felt that defending some of their actions made sense. As I recall, you had and probably still have a real hard-on because EA locked up the NFL license. I have never sided with EA on that decision and have been pretty honest that exclusive licenses are BAD for consumers. I have also openly criticized EA for some of their decisions here, but I realize that those comments are often forgotten just like good news is to bad news. People tend to remember what they want to remember. I know I do it too.
In all honesty, I look back at some of the things I have stated here and in other forums regarding EA and I do cringe at times when I see what I posted. Yes, I got emotional in a number of responses. Who here hasn't at times when they firmly believe in something? Do I regret some of the things I have stated here? Absolutely. However, the key is did I learn something from that? I feel like I did. I have distanced myself from EA over the past couple of years for several reasons. First and foremost, they don't need me defending them for anything. They could give two sh1ts if I support them or not. Whether I support them or not is really irrelevant. They are going to do what they are going to do and have shown me and everyone else that they are pretty much oblivious to communities like this one and others that buy their games. So why waste my time defending something that is indefensible? Another reason I don't defend them is time. I no longer have idle time to engage in such discussions. Add those two up and there has been a major change in the way I respond regarding EA.
You can certainly take your shots at me as you have done here. I know I have pissed off a number of users here in the past with regards to EA. I hope to change that perception. Now could we get this thread back on topic, please?
I'm holding out on my decision to get one until I get more info. Sony's E3 wasn't anything special but november is still a ways off. At the very least I'm going to preorder one so I can sell it. There is no doubt its gonna be a hot item come the holidays. Plus I'm a sucker for htis stuff.
No hard feelings Divot..and I'm really the jerk here for calling you out. There just seemed to me to be a double standard going on, but after reading your last post, I don't have any reason to hold anything against ya. Like you said, we've all been frustrated with some of these companies some times, and other times overly defended some others, usually saying some cringe worthy things in either case. Live and learn I guess.
