Yet another ex-Hawk who I miss and wish we never got rid of. That was a big game by the Oilers today. They're playing the Deadwings smart and are back in control of the series. Hopefully they can finish the job in Edmonton.pk500 wrote:Another guy who's contribution can't be overlooked is Chopper, Ethan Moreau. He's recovering more and more from the groin strain and had better legs today. Moreau does so many little things you'll never see on the scoresheet, such as hit, forecheck like a dervish and kill penalties as well as anyone in the NHL. Plus the guy is a real leader in the room.

Well, I guess there will be a new Stanley Cup champ folks. M. Havlat is an amaizing player and he was the best player during the series. He's got so much skill, soft hands, and it's very creative. In the end Tampa didn't have the goaltending they had in the past either but OTT was superior overall.
If DET doens't play smarter and stronger the series will be over soon. The difference today? The Wings' D let the Oilers stand in front of the net at will, (just look at the three goals) while EDM's D didn't. Too many shots from outside.
After taking four out of six penalties in the 1st period, I think what Mac told his players too, was that they werent' going to win if they continued that way (game 4). If EDM can't finish the job at home, I have a feeling that DET will come back strong.
CAL looks to have the 5th game under control at home as they lead ANA 3-0.

Tortorella rips his players, especially Grahame, so much in the media that I wonder if he says nothing to them in the room, getting a press conference and the post-game locker room confused.
A strange coach. Very strange. Someone -- I think it was at OS -- called Tortorella this decade's Mike Keenan. Pretty apt description, I think.
Take care,
PK

I am in shock, really. I don't know if the last years of Oiler's teams with "some skill but just not enough to...go...all..the..way" even out of the first round have me cautious or what.
But it's offical. My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts. I litterally got out of my chair and cheered after all 3 goals.
I am looking forward to game 6, unless I have been committed by then. In which case, I wonder if they have Hi Def in the loony bin?
If...no... WHEN the Oil make it out of the first round, I think I will personally drive to Dwayne Roloson's house and apologize for the disbelief I had in him during the regular season.
Now, I need a beer to help wash my foot down!

And that's very passe. How would a kid like Grahame ever gets his confidence back (if he ever had any under Tortorella) and play the way he should. Critizicing yor players in public was an old M. Keenan tactic and everyone hated him. Take your frustration in a locker room, rip a guy apart in your office, but not in public. More than anything I think he was frustrated at how the whole season went overall for Tampa. Poor Grahame was his scapegoat.Feanor wrote:Great to see Tampa Bay are out already. Did you guys see the press conference where their coach cremated Grahame after game 4? I actually saw it on Pardon The Interruption, and they almost never talk about hockey.

can't argue with anything. manny looks scared shitless out there, and roloson is playing like a seasoned vet.pk500 wrote:Yes, yes, YES. Great performance today by the Oil, at least for the last two periods. The team defense in the third period was as good as I've seen this season from Edmonton, and how fitting was it that Horcoff tossed his body at Lidstrom's shot at the buzzer, getting a piece of the puck?
Pisani arguably has been the Oil's best overall forward in this series. He's scoring, passing, playing solid defense, forechecking well and killing penalties. The guy is doing it all for the Oil with minimal fanfare.
Among the other forwards, I thought Peca was very active today, and Jarrett Stoll had a very good game. Horcoff also had one of his best games of the series, finally getting a goal.
Another guy who's contribution can't be overlooked is Chopper, Ethan Moreau. He's recovering more and more from the groin strain and had better legs today. Moreau does so many little things you'll never see on the scoresheet, such as hit, forecheck like a dervish and kill penalties as well as anyone in the NHL. Plus the guy is a real leader in the room.
Hemsky and Samsonov woke up a bit today, but they still both look too sleepy and too passive. The Oil will need them to produce in Game 6.
MacTavish continues to show why he's outcoaching Babcock so far in this series. That timeout at the 10-minute mark of the second period was sheer brilliance. The Oil had just iced the puck and was gassed, so the boys needed some extra time. Plus the Oil just had taken a 2-0 lead, and I'm sure there was a question in nearly every Oilers' player's mind of, "Are we going to go to the trap or keep the pedal down and forecheck?" I'm sure MacT used that timeout to explain his plan to the entire team.
I was stunned at how passive Detroit was in its end today. The defensemen, especially Chelly, Kronwall and Lidstrom, just stood around.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Ryan Smyth standing in front of Legace without a Wing within 4 feet of him on Smyth's goal. Lidstrom f*cked up big-time on that play. And how little Shawn Horcoff had multiple chops at the puck on his goal without Kronwall tying him up also was stunning.
Both Oilers' fans and Wings' fans can break down every aspect of this series looking for the difference, and there are small, subtle differences throughout. But the biggest, most obvious difference is that Dwayne Roloson has been much better than Manny Legace so far in this series.
GO OIL! One more to go. Just one more to go.
Take care,
PK
I'd like to give more credit to the Oil but the Wings are really non existenet out there. With the exeption of Maltby Detroit shows absolutely no heart, desire, or even if they want to be playing.
The "to old Wings" are finally living up to it. They need to totaly retool in the offseason.
After the desire and coaching I've seen I'll be routing for the Oil for the rest of the playoffs. Yes I have thrown in the towel. There is no way Detroit deserves this series.
I have this vision of NJ vs Edmonton(crossing fingers on the Oilers). Been a great ride so far.Feanor wrote:So the likely second round match ups are:

Once again. THANK GOD! We have a real sport in post season this spring.

I refuse to acknowledge or read the third line until it actually happens. I'm pulling out all of the superstitions I know for Game 6.Feanor wrote:So the likely second round match ups are:

Get this for geek: I'm actually changing my Oilers' PC wallpaper, which is the team's crest and jersey front, from the white to blue jersey when the Oil plays on the road and at home, respectively. I'm wearing my 1984 #99 Kelly Oilers' white jersey for each game.
So far, so good.

Thanks for bringing this up. What was the deal with this call? When calls this horrid happen in other sports the conspiracy theories start flying and even people who claim not to watch that sport invade threads posting about how bad the call was. I'm really surprised it took this long for that call to be brought up.Feanor wrote:I have to say the Goalie Interference pentalty that was called against he Flyers late in the second period was a joke, and the idiot ref who called it shouldn't do any more playoff games this year. Savage was clearly pushed from behind by a Sabres player into Miller.

It was indeed a terrible call. 1-0 game, with the Flyers playing a solid 2nd period. Savage is clearly pushed into Miller, arm goes up, Sabres score with less than 1 minute left in the 2nd to take a 2 goal lead. A superbly played 2nd period for the Flyers goes down the drain, and all of the momentum swings back to Buffalo.Leebo33 wrote:Thanks for bringing this up. What was the deal with this call? It was a backbreaking goal, but you won't hear any complaints from me, it's part of the game. The Flyers played like crap, and probably didn't deserve to win.
