Rugby 06 talk (morphed from threadjacked TOCA 3 post)
Boys:
Since my TOCA 3 post was massively and hilariously threadjacked by Dave, JRod, tjung and I to talk about Rugby 06, I figured I would just change the thread name to accurately reflect what's being talked about in here.
Just skim to the bottom of this page and all of Page 2 for Rugby 06 talk.
Thanks,
PK

Sorry, Cuz, but I could only take enough cornholing by randoms before I ditched. That was ridiculous.
Sadly, the random experience is deteriorating rapidly with this game, even at Pro Sim. The d*ck-to-skilled ratio seems to be about 2:1 right now, and that's not good.
We need more DSP racing!
Take care,
PK

Yeah, you're probably right. My characterization was a bit harsh, as most of the guys we raced with last night were clean or apologetic as hell about rare mistakes.
But there were two repeat violators, one of which I booted, which pissed me off to no end.
We'll try again soon!
Take care,
PK

No interest in that or any team sports league. I don't like being tied down to leagues, as it's often too much of a pain in the ass to find nights that fit into my schedule and the schedule of the person I'm playing.JackB1 wrote:Hey PK, sorry I had to turn down your invite last night. I was waiting to play a WE League game, which by the way, why the heck aren't you in???
I like spontaneous Poker Nights or weekly, anchored league nights, like our Wednesday MLR's in TOCA or our old Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six regular nights back in the early days of Xbox Live, where if you can't show or don't want to show, it's not going to send the entire sh*thouse up in flames.
Now, if Rugby 06 was online, then I would definitely reconsider my stance against leagues!

Take care,
PK

F you! My Hurricanes would maul -- no pun intended -- your sorry-ass Premiership club.Dave wrote:Your sorry *ss would get destroyed by my London Wasps.pk500 wrote:Now, if Rugby 06 was online, then I would definitely reconsider my stance against leagues!
I can't believe how much I've played this game. I've already done a Six Nations, World Cup, a Premiership season, two Super 16 seasons and am in the midst of a Tri Nations right now. Just an insanely good game.
The crazy thing is now that I'm actually downloading rugby matches via BitTorrent and watching them on my laptop. I even know who the guys are on the cover of the Rugby 06 box cover, as f*cked up as that is!

Dave, what skill level are you on? I'm on Pro, gradually working my way up to Elite. I play 10-minute halves on Pro in all of my competitions, one-off games, etc.
Take care,
PK

I play on pro with 10-minute halves as well. From the amount of leagues you've completed, you're probably closer to Elite than I am.
It seems that this game absolutely punishes boneheaded play, even if your squad is much superior than the opposition. Not that it is fun, but it is rewarding to have a big comeback in the second half after you wasted the first one giving up possession in your own territory.

Absolutely. Nearly every score I surrender is because of a stupid mistake by me either in strategy or execution.Dave wrote:It seems that this game absolutely punishes boneheaded play, even if your squad is much superior than the opposition. That said, I played the Six Nations as Ireland, and Wales kicked my sorry ass because I could not figure out the Welsh set plays to save my life. The Welsh did some crazy recycling and weaving that I haven't seen from any other team.
I don't know enough about rugby or team tendencies to say if the teams in this game play like their real-life counterparts, but there is a HUGE difference in team styles and skill levels among teams in this game. As I said, I couldn't figure out the Welsh at all, and it's really comforting to play as the All Blacks because their defense seems superb. Plus you really know when you're playing an inferior or superior opponent. And f*cking hell, do you know when you're playing against Jonny Wilkinson! That guy is an unstoppable machine in this game.
The strategy in this game, not only in the on-the-fly calls but just how you can devise your own strategy in your head, is nuts. I know this is heresy to most, but I find Rugby 06 to be even more strategic and punishing of mistakes than Winning Eleven 9.
One other plus of Rugby 06: I think it has a pretty b*tchin' soundtrack!

Take care,
PK

LOL! Maybe not automatic like Bo, but a real heart-ripper like Bo!Dave wrote:F*cking Wilkinson.
He's "Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl" good.
Perhaps more like Ozzie Newsome, Webster Slaughter or Dave Meggett in Tecmo Bowl?

Wilkinson kills you because his kicks into touch are like lasers, always putting you within 5 meters of your line. You're f*cking buried and just have to blast a punt out to create some room.
I've read and seen where England plays a "3 meters and a cloud of dust" style of straightforward play in real life, with Wilkinson blasting them out of trouble with his heat-seeking line-out punts and great penalty and drop-kick ability. That's sure as hell what England does in this game, too.
Take care,
PK

I don't know if you have or use BitTorrent, but the England-Ireland game last month at Twickenham, the last match of this year's Six Nations, was an amazing match. And Jonny F*cking Wilkinson didn't even play!
Download if you can. I can show you where. A great 80 minutes of sports entertainment.
Take care,

Pk, pm me with that info on those matches.
Pk, move up to elite. It plays a much better game. Do not try to play stupid or you will get killed. I'm talking about trying to break one loose without any support. That will just give it to the other team.
I can't believe that MVP and Rugby are WE quality. You can play them months or a year after release and it still is a challenging game.

You got it on the PM, man. I'm going to move up to Elite pretty soon. I want to win regularly and convincingly on Pro before I step up. I'm getting there!
Take care,

Nope. No advice here. I've read at some forums where the ruck is still not done right by this game, one of the few areas the development team hasn't honed to a fine edge. There are times where the opponent is strung out and alone and keeps possession yet I have a full ruck in the middle of the field with support and lose it.
Again, I wouldn't know, as I'm no rugby expert yet!
All I try to do is force the opponent back inside of its 22 with punts and play defense like a mother, forcing the opponent to punt in frustration or cause a turnover with a high tackle. I also don't hit the A button to bind more of my guys to the ruck when it's obvious that either the CPU still has clean possession on the ground before the ruck or that I'm outnumbered in the forming ruck. No sense in stringing out my defensive line just so I can pile guys into a ruck that I'm bound to lose.
Hope this helps.
Nice threadjack by us, huh?
