Not at all. But as Zeppo said, ESPN blatantly promotes its made-for-TV events as legit and also is very guilty of promoting the sports it televises more than FOX or CBS. And since sports is all that ESPN does, I consider its editorial judgment to be more cloudy than FOX or ESPN.Boom wrote:And that makes ESPN.com more guilty of promoting their scheduled televised events than the other 2 sports sites doing the same thing how again?pk500 wrote:Then let's go to a tie-breaker: cnnsi.com.Boom wrote:www.foxsports.com opening story is Opening Day

I guess everyone is doing their part to promote what they have their hands in the most.
it's not just ESPN.com
It's leading with the NCAA men's championship preview, at 1:48 p.m. (ET).

The Masters finished fourth out of four in the ESPN.com poll over the weekend to which I've referred. But to be fair, it's a great event. April has some tough competition, with the Final Four, Opening Day and the NFL Draft.bdunn13 wrote:Wow, no talk about the Masters yet.....

first off all, let's throw out the BS yahoo.com's, sportingnews.com's and any other non major network that doesn't air sports.com's right now.
I guess of all the above mentioned trends, MSNBC has any merrit in the conversation as we have made it.
of the 3 major networks airing sports today, all are self-promoting what they are going to be airing.
So what I don't get, other than some people don't like certain networks or their online counterparts, what's the big deal? They're all doing the same thing.

Well if it was for the "most" part then you'd only appear in maybe one or two of the mp3 threads...not all of them. That is the electronic device that gets the most run around here (or maybe HDTVs) but you get the point. If you're participating in every mp3 thread, that's damn near half. So it looks like you just used the wrong phrase patna.pk500 wrote:Convenient how you miss the words for the most part.dbdynsty25 wrote:Says the guy who participated in every MP3 thread created...pimping the awesome Zen Xtra.pk500 wrote: As a former journalist, yes, news judgment means something to me. Nice edit.
Who's doing the selective reading now? I said most of the electronic device purchases involved MP3 players...outside of console purchases, which of course you participate in once in each thread saying you won't buy the next great thing...so I'm failing to see how you don't participate in the majority of the electronic threads? I was discounting the gaming ones because, well, that's what we are here for a majority of the time. Out of all of the OT threads involving electronics, I guarantee you have participated in a majority of them...even to say it's a waste of money or whatever. That is 51% or higher...in case you don't know what majority means.

They rotate the story several times a day, if not several times an hour, don't they?
I don't have a big problem with the content.
It's the usability of the site. First it takes forever to load. Then it plays audio/video in one of the banners whether you want it to or not.
Then it's search is practically useless. Try to find a story or transcript about the OTL from the previous week.

Oh, and there are two active electronics' threads on the first page of the Forum right now. One is about Xbox 360 customer service and support and the other is about Blu-Ray. You're active in both; I'm active in neither. Imagine that.
Yeah, it's just a very small cross-section, but it sort of betrays your belief that I jump in a majority of electronics threads, no?

I guess I miss the point here. If I ran a network I'd sure as hell promote what we showing on the website. If we're talking shameless plugs the winner would be Fox tv. They use any big show of theirs to pimp a new series of theirs. How many times during the MLB playoffs did you hear the announcers talking about a Fox show? Why the hell is the cast of Fox's newest show at an American Idol show? You can't just cast stones at ESPN, every media outlet in America is guilty of sucking.
I am a patient boy.

You're absolutely right. I guess I'm drawing back too deeply without context. I remember around eight or 10 years ago when ESPN hired a new editor in charge of all news and editorial who claimed that he was going to make news a priority at ESPN. He's still there, and news is far from a priority at ESPN, except for ESPN News.
Oh, well, it seems that no one else here shares my zeal for journalism and news judgment, so I'll let it drop. I'm a news geek, plain and simple.

Take care,

For the record, there have been five HDTV threads in 2006 at this Forum, two of which have been combo 360/HDTV threads, to be fair and accurate. There have been three MP3 player threads in 2006 at this Forum.
So MP3 player threads are falling behind HDTV in the popularity derby around these parts.
Take care,
PK

I don't mind ESPN's website as near as I do their sportscenter shows on the tube. Seems like just about every anchor there wants to do a lounge act during the show. the most shameless imo is Stuart "Booyah!" Scott. If the highers up at ESPN wanted their shows announced in hip-hop vernacular they should hire Snoop Dog and get it over with. question: anyone ever remember a Sportscenter when Stew didn't pimp UNC to embarrassing proportions?

I actually think the content of ESPN's site, relative to how much they put up, is pretty decent. Not great, but they have some good columnists. They do rotate their front page, so it's not surprising that they had a lead on the women's Final Four. That's not a bad thing either, considering how UCLA is single-handedly dragging down an otherwise exciting and enjoyable men's tournament
As others have side, it's ESPN's navigation and structure that blows. Way too hard to find stuff.
And the Web site is light years ahead of the magazine in the quality dept.! When I was an Insider member that thing went straight to recycling every month.

But that's because those soccer heads spam the heck out of the board, compared to the nice and tidy threads for hockey, baseball, basketball, and racing.Leebo33 wrote:But all the thread topics lag behind soccer threads with 7 on the first few pages alone!pk500 wrote:So MP3 player threads are falling behind HDTV in the popularity derby around these parts.

The only reason the NCAA basketball tournament is so popular is because everyone (except for me) is in a bracket pool. Take away the people who only watch to see if the teams they picked in their pool will win, and you've got less of an audience than baseball. Seriously, how many people only watch the tournament because they are in a pool?
Opening Day should be bigger than NCAA basketball, at least this year. Most people's pools were screwed when the final four was decided, so a lot of people don't care anymore
