Is ESPN.com a joke, or what?

Post by pk500 »

For anyone who doubts that ESPN.com is nothing more than a promotional vehicle for ratings for ESPN programming, the home page at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) proves it.

It's the true Opening Day for Major League Baseball. The NCAA men's basketball championship is tonight.

And what is ESPN.com leading with? The NCAA women's hoop semifinals? As if more than 12 people in the U.S. give a sh*t?

And the second lead is what, a promo for baseball, when a poll on ESPN.com Sunday showed that of four major sporting events in April, baseball's Opening Day finished third, behind Final Four weekend and the NFL Draft?

Oh, but that's right: ESPN and ESPN 2 are combining to televise five baseball games today and tonight, and ESPN is televising the women's hoop final Tuesday night. How could I forget that?

Take care,
PK

You must get a different ESPN.com than I do. I've got We Predict 2006 for baseball as the MAIN story, with the Mens NCAA as the lead story on the right hand side. I think they just hate YOU PK.

Still, that's a joke, too. You have the championship game for arguably the second-biggest sporting event in the U.S. behind the Super Bowl tonight, and ESPN.com is leading with Opening Day?

Oh, that's right: CBS is televising the men's final.

Why even go there?

Their site is a mess. Can never find anything easily. I avoid it at all costs. I don't mind lousy/biased content as long as I can get to that lousy/biased content quickly and easily.

Gimme a break, PK. Just because you hate baseball, both the game and the business, as you've made very clear over the years, doesn't make Opening Day any less of a big event in the sports world to the rest of America. Yes, the NCAA hoops finals are tonight and tomorrow (I do take umbrage at your '12 people who care' comment about the women's hoops), but those are college games. This is pro baseball, the oldest pro sport in the USA. Opening Day has been a big deal for decades before any one gave a s*** about any NCAA tournaments in any sport.

You hate baseball. We get it. Get over it.

Zep:

My main point was that they led with the women's tournament, which has a pitiful amount of interest compared to the men's tournament and Opening Day. Hell, a weekly NASCAR race or PGA Tour event has more interest than the women's tournament.

But when a poll on ESPN's own Web site ranks the Final Four weekend as the No. 1 sporting event of the month of April, don't you think said Web site would lead with a preview of that event?

I do, regardless of the other events.

And who cares whether the sport is college or pro? What relevance does that have? None. Survey after survey has shown that the second-most popular sport in the U.S. is college football, behind only the NFL. Using your logic, college football should be behind every pro sport because it's only a college sport, after all.

Opening Day is a big deal, a much bigger deal than the NCAA women's basketball final. But ESPN's own survey showed a majority of Americans think the NCAA Final Four is a bigger deal, and the final of that event is tonight.

Plus, wasn't Opening Day yesterday? Oh, that's right: It was Opening Day because ESPN wanted it to be, for promotion of its first Sunday Night Baseball broadcast of the season. ;)

Out,
PK

Well, I can't disagree with that. I happen to appreciate women's college hoops myself, but I don't watch it too often, until the Final Four, ususally, minues the occasional big ACC matchup during the season.

But yes, shameless it is. And yet, I can back their attempt to get behind and promote a truly quality sport, as opposed to the way they shamelessly shill thier bullshit X-games invention during every SportsCenter during those events. How do you think that makes me feel, as an MLS fan, when MLS is also on the ESPN networks, yet they hardly ever show any highlights, nearly none outside of their goofy 'utlimate highlight' music promotion segment, or their top-ten.

They have no problem using SC time to pretend the X-games are credible, and yet can't bother themselves to even give a run down of the MLS games? Now that stuff really bugs me!

BTW I bet the womens final will be just as good if not a better game than the mens. Although the mens should be a good matchup, but those womens teams are pretty good. ACC baby!

Exactly. PK just tries to find ways to talk sh*t about ESPN...this is what, his third thread devoted to them or their writers? We could do that with every site out there if we wanted....ESPN is obviously PK's pet peeve. As Zep said...we get it.

Then let's go to a tie-breaker: cnnsi.com.

It's leading with the NCAA men's championship preview, at 1:48 p.m. (ET).

As a former journalist, yes, news judgment means something to me. If you don't like, then don't read. Just like I don't like or don't read threads about the merits and demerits of electronic equipment and gadgets, for the most part.

And that makes ESPN.com more guilty of promoting their scheduled televised events than the other 2 sports sites doing the same thing how again?

Lead sports link on MSNBC.com home page: Final Four prediction, followed by a Bonds story.

So, about that trend?
