I'm killing wolves, rats, etc with one hit and thieves with a few blows that used to give me more trouble, but it may also have to do with my improved weapons than my level 5 character.

I really enjoyed closing the first gate and clearing a few dungeons early in the game with a low level character. It would suck if I could have just walked in and easily sliced my way through all the level 1 enemies. As long as the difficulty slider works later in the game (I know it works early in the game), then I think it's fine.

Well yeah...that and I played it last night online in the WE9 league we've got going. So I'd say it works pretty well.

The game characters level along with you. Hit a dungeon at level 1? You'll see enemies at similar level. Hit same dungeon when you are at Level 10... again... enemies at similar level as you.

James, how do you like the 360 version of Oblivion compared to the PC? I have the 360 version but I've been really tempted to check it out on my PC. I have a fairly mid-range PC (3.2, 6800) and I don't really want to spend hours tweaking the game, but curiousity is starting to get the best of me.

I actually like the concept.

I just wonder if it holds true for guards and special NPCs???with higher level quests?

Gameplay is about the same on both... just have to get used to the different controller options.

Graphically... when I ran the PC version, I could run it reasonably well at 1024 or so, but I had to turn off grass and lower some distance sliders. I would say it looked about the same as 360 version does at those settings (except 360 has grass, and better water) but the big difference was in battles. It was ok early on, but when I got into battles with multiple baddies (first one that comes to mind is odil farm) it would lag enough to be annoying and affect gameplay. I tried turning down the resolution to 800x600 but it didn't fix the lag at that point. I'm pretty sure I'm CPU-bound on this game (P4 2Ghz, 1GB RAM, 9700 Pro 128MB). Also on my PC the "dude dies and flies up the in air" animation was rather stuttery. It LOOKED amazing though, but would go slow.

Tcrouch has a much more powerful PC than I, probably similar to yours and he's been telling me it looks more impressive on the PC (but I think his wife won't let him touch PC version since she's playing it LOL). Check out the forums at elderscrolls.com, there's a lot of talk about PC performance there.

I went with 360 version because:

1) had just bought a 360 and this is one of the games that is supposed to show the power of the system
2) wanted it to be more "fluid" graphically
3) wanted to be able to play while my kids are using the computer (they get "video game time" on weekends, and typically play "toon town")
4) could sell my original PC version for pretty much what I paid for it originally.

PC and 360 versions look identical to me, and the PC loads faster.

Athlon 4000, 2GB of PC3200 DDR RAM and a Radeon X800. If anything, the X800 is a bit of a bottleneck but it still performs wonderfully with the game. But Jamie's right...I can't ever get on it, I just have to watch it since my wife is always playing her mage.

After logging 8 hours with this game here's my take. Keep in mind i have never played this type of game EVER before. I have no idea what i'm doing, don't know the least bit about which spell/scroll/weapon to use when, clueless as to how to level up and/or barter/persuade, don't know why i'm picking up flowers and cheese, and i'm all around an Oblivion moron.

But i still can't wait to play it tonight when the wife is out and the kids are in bed!

I can only imagine how i'll feel if i start to get a clue. Loving this game.

Just picked this up today on the 2 for 1 EB deal (and the collector's edition to boot). You guys weren't kidding, this game is great. I just got out of the sewers and am in Imperial City. This is the game Fable should have been.

I just started using persuasion today and now I can't stop using it on everyone...LOL. It's so simple, but I find it amusing. My wife thought I was crazy sitting there for 15 minutes trying to influence someone to give me info at a crime scene.

The only bad thing about this game is that it doesn't seem like good console RPGs are that frequent and now I think I'm getting hooked! Well, at least at my rate of gaming I can probably play this for another 6 months. I think it took me at least that long to finish KOTOR, but I'm playing this at a much faster pace (12 hours and that's a lot for me).

I'm starting to realize that there's a design choice that has come to ruin this game for me.

The Level Scaling. I can understand why they did it... I really can. I know it allows you to do anything you want in the game at anytime you want to do it. There is nothing unavailable to you from the outset; the choice is yours to do whatever it is you want to do.

At the same time, that's what's making me lose any motivation about putting the game back into my system. There's nothing that I really NEED to work toward achieiving. I don't NEED more experience, better weapons / armor, equipment, improved skills, etc to see what's in THAT Dungeon. I could wipe it at level one, just as easily as I could at level 10 or 15.. actually maybe even easier.

As I become this uber hero with the best gear, most experience, ultimate skills everyone else in the world is right there with me.

There's no coming back to Imperial City one day to show off what you've become along the course of your journey. There's no NPC "nooBs" to impress if you know what I mean.

Seriously though. I've lost the desire to really work for anything in this game. I guess achievement whores would argue that the Achievement Points alone are with working toward, but c'mon.

If I can visit the same dungeons as a peon and just get worse loot, who gives a rats ass. I miss that feeling of having earned the rights of passage to even explore some areas without getting wiped immediately.

Again, I get it..... and other than this design choice I really am digging the game. It has that MMO feeling without the feeling of having to keep up with your friends if you ever want to play with them again a week down the road. I just wish I had to work toward having the ability to explore new areas / dungeons / caves / forts etc etc etc

The level scaling bothered me at first but then I realized a couple things and now think it's not bad at all. First, the NPCs overall level advances with you but not necessarily their skills. So if you choose to specialize and play a particular type of character you will be better than the enemies over time. But if you play a jack of all trades or use skills such as acrobatics or athletics as major skills to help you level you may end up deficient in the all important combat skills when you need them.

Second, the game will be somewhat of a challenge as long as I want to play it. I won't eventually be this uber character that can slay any enemy by sneezing at them. It will be more like I have trained and refined my skills over time instead of going from pathetic noob to a god over the course of 60 hours.

I can see why some people don't like the level scaling especially if you prefer the traditional RPG formulas but for me it works.

Boom,
Try upping the difficulty level. I love how you can change the difficulty on the fly. If you're feeling like too much of a badass a difficulty adjustment might knock you down a peg or two. It's worth a shot since this game offers so much gameplay.

It's not so much that I'm feeling like a badass, or that I really wanted to come back and impress nooB NPC's.

I just miss the feeling of having to work toward having the ability to explore certain ereas. I don't like how you can wipe any dungeon at level one just as easily (or probably even easier) than you could at 10.

I know this was the desigin choice to allow you to do whatever you wanted from the outset of the game. Bravo to them for doing something different from other typical rpg's, however it's just not for me I guess.

I love the open-endedness of the game. I love how you can just go out and get lost in exploration at your desire. I just wish that there were areas that if I happened to stumble across while too low of a level or with inadequate gear that I'd get waxed. It just gives me the motivation to go out and get stronger, better, etc etc to come back and take that area on later in the game.

I'm not knocking this game's quality by any means. It's clearly a great game, just not one that I can truly enjoy because of the scaling..that's all.

I can definitely understand some of the frustration from the feeling of being able to take on anything at anytime. I have been pleasantly pleased with a few areas that do require some character advancement however. I came across a daedra cult that required me to ascend to level 8, as well as a shrine where I was told I wasn't skilled enough to begin the quest, so they did add a few areas where level matters. I haven't explored nearly enough to see how prevalent this is though.
