The door could be open for NFL2K7

If the NFLPA is decertified, it means that EA would no longer have exclusive rights to all the players. In that case, VC could put out a game a la Madden 64 with accurate player names for ficticious teams. Assuming the game could be modded, that would really open the door for a game as soon as next year for the Xbox, and possibly even the 360.
Some good has to come out of this, after all...

I'm glad you brought this topic up because I haven't really followed it closely even though it's been on the news this week.
So what is the issue with the NFL and NFLPA, just a salary cap? Is this a bad thing? Wasn't there no salary cap in the 80s and 90s and the NFL was probably at it's pinnacle in the quality of play? I liked those days much more than the parity we have today. At least when I saw Montana's niners or Jimmy's cowboys, I knew that those were the best teams playing and their play showed it. There was no doubt back then.
So if they dont come to an agreement, do we go back to that type of structure in 2007? Or is there more to this whole rift between the NFL and NFLPA.

If there is no salary cap, small market teams will not likely be competitive . Once people recognize that their team cannot compete without a salary cap, they will lose interest in the league and the NFL will start its decline.Inuyasha wrote:I'm glad you brought this topic up because I haven't really followed it closely even though it's been on the news this week.

Yeah from what I've read this will be very bad for the fans if they can't come to an agreement. Teams will have to cut a lot of veteran players and won't be able to hold onto their franchise players. I hope they can come to an agreement over the weekend, I don't want to see the league end up like baseball with your have and have not teams.

But if there is no NFLPA,a game company would have to negotiate individual deals with any players it wished to use. With the money involved with gaming these days,I think any player would want to squeeze the game companies for cash, especially the star players.seanmac31 wrote:http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2351462

Surprise, surprise, at the 11th hour they decided to postpone free agency until Monday. By the time the weekend is over, I'm sure they'll come to an agreement and it will be business as usual.
This was an interesting story for a while, until I realized that the NFL (both players and owners) will not let things get to the point the NHL did. It's all been much ado about nothing. Both sides stand there and make hardline claims, and one of them (or maybe both) is sure to blink.
There is no way the NFL removes the salary cap. The door will be slammed shut by Monday morning.

I'd rather have real NFL teams with ficticious player names but that's just me.seanmac31 wrote:http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2351462

I see it the other way.tjung0831 wrote:I'd rather have real NFL teams with ficticious names but that's just me.
The NFL doesnt own the rights to the name Pittsburgh. So If Pittsburgh has all the Steelers and are named The Pittsburgh Teamsters whats the big difference. Seems to Me its alot better with the player names...

It doesn't sound like it's about the cap as it is about the amount of NFL revenue that is supposed to go to the players. The players want 60% the NFL wants 56% or some such thing. (Maybe the linked article says that, I'm not sure since the ESPN site is blocked from where I work.)
The Lions Weblog and mlive.com has a very good analysis of the salary cap issue and how an uncapped year in just 2007 is probably the last thing players should want (http://www.mlive.com/lions/weblog/index ... tml#117196). Among the reasons noted:
- Without a new CBA they'll a ton of benefits the league currently covers (insurance, 401k matching, etc.)
- Just like the NHL, few NFL teams will spend big money on contracts heading into a potential lock out whether there's a cap or not.
- If a new CBA isn't agreed on then players will have to have six seasons of experience instead of four.
- NFL teams would get to use two franchise player tags instead of one.
In all likelihood (if the linked article is to be believed), you'd actually have players making less money with fewer benefits and most prime players, between lack of eligibility and multiple franchise tags available to all teams, won't make it to the free agent market anyway.
I'd be shocked if there isn't a deal by the end of the weekend.
