I am not turning this into a pro/con Bush debate. This is a story about FREE SPEECH and a teacher who raised some similiarities between Bush and Hitler and was suspended for it. This is a free speech issue. The teacher clearly said that it was just what he thought and that he was encouraging his students to think for themselves. I am not saying I agree with his analogy. I am just saying this teacher is entitled to his opinion. If people can go around saying Bush is doing "God's work" and comparing him to Jesus, then people can go the other extreme and compare Bush to Hitler. We need free discussion in our classrooms and that includes bothe ends of the spectrum. We also need to teach kids to always question authority and not just do things because. The fact that this teacher was suspended for this is just wrong.
I might agree with you if this guy was a college professor. He's not.
This was at a public school and he's being paid by us the taxpayers to teach not preach. He is trying to manipulate a class full of 15 and 16 year old kids. He 's an asshole of epidemic proportion.

After his WTC remarks and the ""kill people just for the sake of killing people" remarks. I say f*** him. He needs to be fired.

Forget about it - I just listened to the whole thing (I couldn't get the link to work earlier) and this guy's really preaching hard.

Even his tone of voice is really impassioned, really much more than it should be and way overboard. This type of thing would probably be out of line in a college or university in a general lecture, let alone a high school classroom.

Naples39 wrote:How anyone could defend what this guy said after actually listening to the full tape is beyond me. What the tape reveals is a 20-minute political rant full of half-truths, wild accusations, and irresponsible analogies. There is zero effort by the teacher for any type of balance about discussing different approaches to the extremely broad issues he is talking about, nor is there a shred of discussion taking place in the classroom. Being someone who was in college just a few years ago, I can honestly say that if one of my professors lead a 'discussion' in this manner with such clearly biased, all over the map comments, myself and most of my colleagues would have gotten up and walked out. That was not teaching, it was preaching of his own rather narrow and extreme political views.
Are we sure that this "teacher" isn't Michael Moore? :D

Couldn't agree more with your post....

This belongs in geography like sex ed belongs in auto shop. Bull like this is not teaching, it is (as someone has already said) indoctrinating.

Teach reading, writing, and arithmetic, and leave the worldviews and ideologies to the parents. I agree; suspension is too light. This guy needs to be fired.

There's absolutely no context within a school where this guy's tirade is acceptable-on any level...

I cannot get that link to work, so all I know about this is what I saw on the first video. can someone who gets the link to work download it and then upload it to www.yousendit.com and then post the link here. I am interested in hearing the whole thing. I thought he just made one small comment about Bush's speech being similiar to Hitler's. I didn't know he went on a rant for almost an hour. This guy sounds like a real nut.

Good luck...I made it through about half. I should have just taken Naples' word for it...he summed it up perfectly.

This is going on in my area. My High School feeder basketball team plays against Overland's.

Crazy to see something that happened so close making such waves nationally.
