Xbox360 File System Hacked
I know there has been interest here about transferring Xbox360 gamesaves so I figured I'd post this.
It appears the Xbox 360 file system has been hacked and it allows for moving files to and from the 360, including gamesaves.

Ah, if only the hackers would turn their attention to worthwhile problems; there would probably be no diseases left known to man. Instead, they stay up late at night hacking PSPs and Xbox 360s. Of course, tackling real problems would require a modicum of intelligence, which 99% of all hackers have in short supply. But they must continue on, because we simply *must* be able to run Mike Tyson's Punchout!! on the 360....

Well, I saved a small kid from drowning when I was fifteen, so I guess the answer is "one".dbdynsty25 wrote:And how many lives have you save Kaz? As someone who seems fairly intelligent, that would mean that you have put your mind to good use for the worthwhile problems right? Just checking...
Actually, I do sometimes beat myself up that instead of being a teacher or social worker or something useful in society, I am merely a greedy professional. The stuff I do does benefit society a little bit, as does all research, but ultimately I could do a lot better. Of course, President Bush was in Dallas a couple of weeks ago calling for all science and engineering types to consider becoming teachers, but the crappy school systems still want to hand out crappy salaries. Maybe when I'm retired, George...
Regardless, I would never use any of my abilities for something as stupid and frivolous as hacking. I guess what bothers me most is hackers stupid psuedo ethics... of course I should probably be saying crackers instead of hackers but what the hey. I know there are some hackers out there who won't cross certain lines, but they are few and far between.
The most powerful thing about hackers is that they all work together *like crazy*. It's amazing how they share knowledge and apply it instantly. Properly used, it could solve legitimate problems, instead they're cracking the latest version of Frooty Loops.

Well, I'm not sure whether or not hackers have much experience with biology and chemistry so I doubt they'd be much use in eliminating diseases.Kazuya wrote:Ah, if only the hackers would turn their attention to worthwhile problems; there would probably be no diseases left known to man. As for hacking, I've had a modded X-Box for 2 years now and for two years I've been running XBox Media Centre (an open-source program updated almost once a month) and have been able to do all the same audio, video streaming, and PC media integration that M$ have made a big part of the appeal of the XBox 360. I can play DivX, DVDs, SVCDs, MP3s (via a neat iTunes plug-in) and more. My XBox dashboard has a Weather channel plug-in as well as a calendar.
And I don't have to buy a new Xbox 360 to do this.
I can play PAL games and PAL DVDs, and yeah, I can play emulators too.

As for hacking for playing pirated games, well that's a whole other issue and I don't agree with piracy. But then again, just to play devils advocate, downloading MP3s for which you don't own the original CD is considered piracy too and yet there's not nearly as much stigma attached to it......
Who knows, most of them couldn't tell a multiplexer from an inverter and yet they are getting a lot done through strength in numbers. Maybe they could cure cancer too...Macca00 wrote: Well, I'm not sure whether or not hackers have much experience with biology and chemistry so I doubt they'd be much use in eliminating diseases.

An excellent point... however it's well known I condemn bothMacca00 wrote:As for hacking for playing pirated games, well that's a whole other issue and I don't agree with piracy. At the end of the day, hacking isn't illegal so there isn't much more I can say. Of course, the hackers will hang their hat on that fact while irresponsibly releasing information that makes it easy for people to pirate games left and right.

Looks like too much work (soldering a USB cable to a 360 memory card).
I'll just wait for a new Action Replay for the 360... as long as it comes out before NCAA Football 2007

Well, hacking has one good use: finding security holes in software and other such applications. Then again, if it weren't for hackers one wouldn't really need to fix those holes to begin with.
I've heard of many corporations hiring "hackers" because their ability to detect vulnerabilities and get into the proper mindset to design and implement security measures.

The same could be said for large companies. Why do they try to prevent hacking? It seems like every device known to man that hackers have wanted to hack, they have. Yet, big companies spend billions trying to prevent it when they could be spending their money fighting cancer and world hunger.Kazuya wrote:Ah, if only the hackers would turn their attention to worthwhile problems; there would probably be no diseases left known to man. The losers here are the ones buying their products, paying for their worthless and meaningless security measures.
That's ridiculous for a nearly infinite number of reasons. First most "big companies" in the world are quite philanthropic, and even the stingiest give far more to charities than a bunch of loser hackers. Does anyone really even need to mention Bill Gates benevolence? There are tons of reasons to not want a console hacked, from avoiding lawsuits with emulators to maintaing the quality of the technology or preventing pirates from stealing games. Do you want a bunch of cheaters running around on Xbox Live? Not to mention if the hackers weren't trying to hack in the first place, no retaliatory action would be necessary.bdunn13 wrote:The same could be said for large companies. I do agree with you that the "inevitability" of hacking would seem to require a re-examination of prevention methods, but lumping them in with the hackers is asinine.
I must commend your originality, I have never heard anyone use that defense before. Let's blame the rising costs of fighting crime in our communities not on the criminals, but on the police for trying to stop them. Fascinating.bdunn13 wrote:The losers here are the ones buying their products, paying for their worthless and meaningless security measures.

It's a personal decision...but there is no difference in music, movie or video game piracy. You either buy your stuff at retail or you don't.Macca00 wrote:Well, I'm not sure whether or not hackers have much experience with biology and chemistry so I doubt they'd be much use in eliminating diseases.Kazuya wrote:Ah, if only the hackers would turn their attention to worthwhile problems; there would probably be no diseases left known to man. I don't download music, because of sound quality.
But I copy rented games(I love Gamefly).
Didn't I just see an interview with John Carmack where he pushed the 360 mainly because of the fact that ID's PC games are losing so much money to piracy?
Personally, I just want to get NCAA 2007 rosters with names for the 360. Although, I have never even heard it confirmed that NCAA is coming to the 360 this year.

NCAA is coming..at least according to EBgames and Gamestop.
now, if EA will just include the EA Locker as they did with Madden 06 for PS2 and XBOX there's no need for any hacking or AR just for a roster file.
EA's Locker is one of the most under appreciated aspects of Madden 06. For one it eliminates the need for such a device (at least when it comes to that particular game).

They already are.Do you want a bunch of cheaters running around on Xbox Live?
And if companies would not waste money on useless security measures then no one would have a reason to hack. Who is successful, b/c it surely isn't the big companies. Heck, I believe DVD encrption was broken by a 12 year old while hundreds of millions was spent to create it. Who is wasting the time and money? Not to mention if the hackers weren't trying to hack in the first place, no retaliatory action would be necessary.
But hacking per say is not illegal. Modding an xbox is NOT illegal. Playing a DVD on linux is NOT illegal(but big companies won't let us do this). The only ones wasting their time and money here are the large companies. We should thank most of these hackers or are fair use rights would less than what they already are today.I have never heard anyone use that defense before. Or the benevolence he has prevented from others by creating an illegal/unnatural monopoly and therefore reducing jobs, innovation and consumer choices.Does anyone really even need to mention Bill Gates benevolence?
