And speaking of soft, you know you're in trouble when the coach rips you apart in public, calling the worst defense in the league, that half the team only cares, that maybe they should be payed 50% of their salary because only a 50% effort is shown, that they got no vision, that they are pathetic... and I can go on, but do a search and you know that I can only be speaking of the Penguins.hulkster29 wrote:well so long to Mr Softy.. I think a firesale will start soon, with M. Recchi leading the way.
Big WIN for the Canucks as they beat the Leafs in a very up tempo game as usual at the garage.
The Zebras blew the call on Thornton's long awaited return to BOS last night when he hit H. Gill from behind, maybe a penalty but not a misconduct and ejection.

Well, Terrien was right about the Pens. Either the Pens don't care, are incredibly slow, or the Oil is even faster than I thought. The Oilers simply blew away Pittsburgh with their speed in the 3-1 victory last night. First career hat trick for Shawn Horcoff!10spro wrote:And speaking of soft, you know you're in trouble when the coach rips you apart in public, calling the worst defense in the league, that half the team only cares, that maybe they should be payed 50% of their salary because only a 50% effort is shown, that they got no vision, that they are pathetic... and I can go on, but do a search and you know that I can only be speaking of the Penguins.hulkster29 wrote:well so long to Mr Softy.. Pittsburgh is a very slow hockey team, which is inexcusable for a team that has a decent amount of young players. Recchi, LeClair and Gonchar are a waste of space. Relics from a past era.
Yep, the refs blew the call on Thornton. That was a boarding or charging minor. Even Hal Gill, the recipient of the hit, said after the game that the ejection was too stiff of a penalty.
Take care,

Hmm ... this was an NHL game, not a college game. Plus Gill was somewhat sideways, as he started to turn away at the last second when he saw Big Bird coming, not with his back completely turned like Travis Roy.Zlax45 wrote:I see a ton of college hockey and the hit Thorton did deserved a game misconduct in the college game because Gill could not defend himself. Remember, I have lived in the Boston area my whole life and everytime I see a player checked from behind I think of Travis Roy. Just my opinion.

agreed - Thorton didnt need a ejection - maybe a double minor or something, but not a game misconduct... oh- glad to see the Isles still losing..
ps- about the Roy thing, didn't he injure himself by trying to hit the other guy (not the other guy hitting him)? i know they had a thing on ESPN about it the other night - man, he has had to overcome a lot since then...

You are right about the Travis Roy hit but it is more common to happen on a hit from behind thus the reasoning that hitting from behind is one of the most severe penalties in hockey.hulkster29 wrote:agreed - Thorton didnt need a ejection - maybe a double minor or something, but not a game misconduct... oh- glad to see the Isles still losing..

One of the scariest things to happen to me when I was in college was when I was reffing intramural floor hockey. We had full boards and glass like a regular hockey rink but with a gym flooring. I had a kid hit someone from behind and I automatically ejected him beacuse it was so dangerous. It is not the intent that is the problem, it is doing the action.

Word is starting to get out.
This isn't the kind of reputation you want to earn as a rookie, as it's probably the hardest one to shake. Hopefully, Lemieux can get through to the kid. He's definitely a special talent.

Sad but true.
Sad but true.
Boys, thursday is a special day in NYC, at MSG.
Mark Messier's number will be retired in a game featuring the Rangers vs the team that kick started his awesome career. He is one of the finest leaders in any sports, if not the best IMO.
In NY he was what B. Ruth did to the Yankees, what W. Reed meant to the Knicks in the 70's, J. Namath to the Jets.
His defining moment, guaranteeing a victory in NJ in game 6 in 94, sudden death, scoring a hat trick and winning eventually the Stanley Cup against my beloved Canucks.
A game to watch for sure, number 11, was the best captain the Rangers ever had!

I was just watching that game...wow....that has to be my Blues wearing Penguin jerseys tonight!

A soft, slow team led by a diver -- not a great recipe for success!HipE wrote:I guess the Pens defense really took those comments to heart. They gave up a goal 10 seconds into the game tonight, and are now down 6-1 with 13 minutes left in the second period.

Mario Lemieux talking to a player about diving and complaining to the refs too much? Now that is some rich irony if I've ever seen it.Sully wrote:http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/w ... index.html

Maybe it was his French accent, but when he said: "They are sooooft...." I think what he really meant was "They suck...."vader29 wrote:Link to Therrien's comments from last night http://boss.streamos.com/wmedia/penguin ... pc700k.asx

Should be a good one at the Joe tonight, Detroit/Philly as Detroit tries to snap a 2 game slide. I still can't believe they blew that 3 goal lead to Dallas.
Exactly. That's why I don't think it is a big deal. I think he'll learn from it and improve. These are the SAME exact comments that came out during Lemieux's early career. And he did lose a lot of calls and apparently the benefit of the doubt from the refs from his diving. I guess you can say it hurt the team. They probably would have won at least 4 or 5 cups instead of only two.Naples39 wrote:Mario Lemieux talking to a player about diving and complaining to the refs too much? NBC is back with the NHL this weekend including upcoming playoffs games. No glowing puck this time (thank goodness) but they'll include a goalie cam and the announcer & analyst will be joined by a third "inside the glass" voice between the two benches like TSN does their broadcasts.
The announcers will try a more converstional approach to the game, trying to explain not only what's happening, but how and why. I hope this works to bring more interest in the US market.

Damnit. The san jose v. Ottawa game showed me "This program has been blacked out in your area" crap again, as did the calgary one. THis is on Bell Expressvu, on both the Sportsnet channels and A-OTT which was carrying the Sens game.
So, there was NO game on TV that I could watch (without the NHL Center ice package... but maybe they'd black it out on that too?)
Yeah, I live in Toronto area, but the blue&white were not even playing tonight as far as I can tell. Even if they were, the ACC is always sold out anyway.
WTF is up with the blackout?
