NHL exclusivety too?

Post by ScoopBrady »

I don't know anything about this site but I found a link to this story on the IGN boards. Can you imagine if 2k couldn't make any more hockey titles?
I am a patient boy.

No. If 2K stopped making hockey titles, there would be no point in buying a hockey game. EA's hockey games -- with the exception of NHL 2004 -- are that bad.

Take care,

It sounds as if the NHL/NHLPA are going about this the right way. I hope the days of new exclusive license agreements are over. They are simply NOT good for end users.

Not in Canada, and not in parts of Europe.

Are NPD numbers from world wide sales or just in the US? I aks because this is what I was refering to, last time BD posted info, Hockey was laggin way behind in sales. I think combined from the two games, on all platforms the sales were less then 500k, paying 45 million for exclusive rights for what is still my question.

Now if in Cananda they sell 2 million copies a year, then that is another thing altogether.

Totally agree....exclusive licensing will kill hockey games. Only 2k shhould be doing hockey in the first place.

Well i am glad that is not going the same way the whole Madden deal went down. The funny thing is i had also just bought NHL06 real cheap on ebay, i wanted a change of pace from 2k. I find if you tone the whole arcade aspect down and with some mods it plays a pretty decent game, but not nearly as nice as 2k6. Ea always has to have some parts of the game arcadish for the younger crowd and 2k does not, they make sports like sports should be.

No. This would be bad too. Then we would get rehashes of NHL 2K4 and have to live with all of Kush's guaranteed bugs. Competition is good, plus 2k doesn't do PC hockey, which is what I usually play.

It was quite refreshing to read in one of the reports that the NHL is leery of exclusivity because EA's hockey games have been tepidly received by gamers.

Nice to know that money doesn't do all of the talking and that quality might mean something.

Take care,

While I agree with your assessment of EA's recent NHL products, do not think for a minute that they are overlooking the fact that they likely make more money from EA than they do from 2K Sports.....

Tim:

No question. Money eventually will speak loudest, but it's nice to see that there's at least a pause from a sanctioning body to consider quality for a few minutes.

I just get very touchy about EA exclusivity with hockey since it's my favorite team sport, in real life and videogame form, and only 2K/Sega has historically provided the kind of realism I want in a game.

When EA inevitably gets the license, hopefully guys like Flying Finn and NickChew can keep NHL 2K6 alive for a year or two with their editor and rosters, respectively, like they have with NFL 2K5.

Take care,
PK

Also agree. I wish EA would get back to their hockey roots from the early 90's and stop putting "EA Big-style" arcade nonsense into their Sports titles. Believe me, every chance I get, I convey that message....

I just wish we could have TWO very solid developers/publishers competing on equal footing (from a licensing perspective). I also wish that the hardcore/simulation players could drive improvements and innovation instead of the cheesy crap like "Tigerproofing", etc....
