with my bad drive i tried to do the windows recovery thing as well and i couldnt even get the command DIR to list anything on the drive. external enclosure didnt work either, havent tried actually putting it in the PC as a secondary drive.
luckily for me all i lost was some favorites and game saves.

Yeah, in the recovery mode you have limited commands at your disposal.

The best one in the list is the copy command, but notice the limitations. I know you can use Recovery console to copy files to your CD Burner, unsure about External devices.
Also may want to consider, booting from your USB Drive. IF you have a new BIOS you should see that option in you boot list. Now you will need to have your USB Drive have a bootable partition.
