OT - Steroids Legislation

Well, who here thinks Congress will actually pass this?

INSANE!!! Who do these Senator's think they are. This is not what these guys should be focusing on. Steroids is baseball is baseball's problem. Baseball can fix it or not as they see fit. It drives me crazy how big government can't keep its paws off things. ARGHHHH!!!! OK rant over.

MLB has anti-trust exemption. Congress can do what ever they want to MLB. If MLB does not like it, they only have themselves to blame.

Last I checked Steroids are illegal. Not illegal in just a baseball sense, illegal as in for EVERYONE. Since baseball has not been able to FIX it, the goverment has had to INTERVENE. It is not about big goverment, try "Big Player Unions" that try to fight off testing for their players.

INSANE is what you typed in bold.

Agreed. The penalties that McCain and Bunning are proposing are harsh, but I see absolutely no reason why there should be any debate from MLB. The players are not that dumb that they don't know what they're putting in their bodies. If they even have an inkling of mistrust from their trainers, get rid of them.

Enough is enough. I myself am looking forward to a skinny Barry Bonds again.....to help his knees of course.

There is a huge difference between what the government can and what the government should do. In my opinion they have far bigger troubles than steroids in baseball to deal with. My fantasy scenario:

Aide: Hey senator whats on the agenda today?
Senator: I dunno, we've got poverty, terrorism, environmental degradation, my kid thinks we are owned by the country formerly known as red china, my teenage daughter is pregnant and Barry Bonds, who is practically my age, is still knocking the ball out of the park like Babe Ruth.
Aide: Bonds is a dick. He made my sister cry once when he played for the Pirates.
Senator: No kidding. He listens to rap music too. That s*** is destroying the nation. Plus look at the guy. He's f***in huge. f***er is so on gear. Isn't that s*** illegal.
Aide: I believe it is Senator. But you know how it is. People look the other way. I was watching TV with my kid the other day and some entertainer named Snoopy the Dog was smoking the reefer on TV. The apocalypse is surely upon us. But what are we to do.
Senator: I'm a f***in Senator. Get me the commisioner...get me Bowie Kuhn on the phone.
Aide: I think you mean Bud Selig Senator.
Senator: You're shitting me. Someone made Bud the commissioner of Baseball. Holy f*** the apocalypse is upon us.

We got big budgetary problems and McCain is also trying to pass some anti-torture amendment.

Where does steroids legislation fall in the scheme of things?

Oh and ARod won the MVP even though he's got to be the least clutch MVP in history.

He hasn't been clutch in previous playoffs or during the regular season in big games.

This goes back to his Seattle days too. He was always putting up big numbers but there are times when pressed, he's a lot easier out than you would think he'd be.

Anyways, good for him because he got a bonus. Wonder if the Yankees like paying him so much and he hasn't helped the team get to the WC.

Albert wins the MVP in the NL. It really could have gone to either Jones or Pujols. They were both deserving.

Andruw really wasn't that deserving. He was better than usual (especially when Chipper was out), but not MVP calibur. The hitting with RSIP and just the batting average in general killed him. If he hit .290 he would have won it...but if you're in the .260's, there is pretty much no way you'll win it. At least he was close...that's the fan in me speaking.

So here is the expected response to this: Using this logic I suppose cops should never pull over speeders or arresting shoplifters because there are more important crimes being committed. Then again, there is poverty and hunger all around the world, so why are you wasting your time posting in a sports gaming message board? You should be out there helping the hungry!

As a lifelong baseball fan I'm glad SOMEONE is willing to do something about it. Too bad no one is putting the microscope to professional wrestling the same way they are to baseball. Too many wrestlers having been dropping lately because of steroid abuse lately.

Gotta love when the superstars restructure their deals so that the team can get better by using the money elsewhere. Glad to see he stepped forward to do that.

The 50/100/lifetime ban seems more reasonable to me, and I'm glad baseball will be implementing it. A two-year suspension for your first positive test just seemed too harsh to me.

I think it is unwise to look to government to solve problems that are best left to private business. We could argue all day about which problems require government action and which ones don't. If MLB has a problem with steroids, let MLB deal with it. If they don't, let the fans deal with MLB. I should add that while I don't think steroids should be illegal in general, I do think most sport ruling bodies should prohibit their use.

Two years is very steep. A significant part of a player's career and his lifetime earnings could just be in that two years.

Guess Congress wanted to show how tough it is on serious issues, even if they have no backbone to prevent Ted Stevens from appropriating millions for a bridge to nowhere.

My point exactly. I told MLB what I thought of the strike by ditching MLB. I used to go to at least 10 games a year and watch a fair bit on TV. Now I go to 2 or 3 games a year and watch almost none. I would love MLB to adopt a hardcore steroid policy (I think they should do something along the lines of FIFA) and if they did I'd probably pay more attention to the game, but I think it is very dangerous to let the government get their mitts on such things.

Apparently a trade is about to go down:

The Marlins would give Beckett & Lowell to the Rangers for Blaylock and prospects.

If that happens...and the fish are in trouble since they are already talking about dealing Delgado and they will lose Burnett to free agency. Wow...they really need a stadium down there.
