That list looks like a collection of titles for sale on clearance at Best Buy.
No TOCA 2, no CMR 2005, no Links, no Amped 2, etc., etc. If TOCA 2 and CMR 2005 aren't on here, then I highly doubt TOCA 3 will be BC in the spring.
This just extinguished any flickering envy I have of cats getting an Xbox 360 on launch day.
Take care,
PK

You're not alone PK. For brief moments I had little urges to check out the 360. This list pretty much kills that off. There is no way I'm going to sacrifice all the great games I have just to play less games with fewer features and prettier graphics.
I suspect there are more like us lurking out there, just not posting.

Yeah, but if you think this paucity of BC top-drawer Xbox titles isn't a ploy by Microsoft, then I have oceanfront property in Nebraska to sell you.Diablo25 wrote:I agree.Still, a lot of my collection is not listed yet. But I have to believe that over the next few months we'll see that list grow quite a bit.
Of course, MS isn't going to make titles like PGR 2 and Madden BC. Why would it? That only would dissuade some people from buying those titles at $60 per per ($50 for PGR 3) for the 360.
MS' strategy is quite simple here. Release a long list of BC titles so it appears that MS is the gamer's friend, even if 90 percent of those titles are sheer tripe. Over the next six months to a year, MS will add more titles to the list, including some Grade-A games.
But by then, those who have purchased Xbox 360s at or near launch will have a big enough library of 360 titles that BC won't interest them that much and it won't be nearly as much of a factor.
So MS appears to be the gamer's advocate through this whole thing even though this entire BC exercise is a mix of PR and profit, with a pinch of gaming benevolence thrown in.
Take care,
PK

One other thing to consider: Wasn't EVERY PSX title backward compatible with the PS2 at launch?
I'm no Sony fanboy, as anyone who has been here knows. But damn, it sure seems like Sony gave more of a sh*t about its existing customers when it transitioned from one console generation to the next than MS does here.

I'm pretty sure titles yet to be released will all be b-c, at least after the new year. I think the devs just have to put in whatever little nugget is necessary to make emulation work, and since the 360 will be available it shouldn't be a problem, or more, any problem will be due to the devs, not MS. Yet to be released titles should have those nuggets on the disc. We'll see, but I'm pretty confident that by Xmas, that list will be much, much longer, and newly released games will be b-c right out of the shrink wrap.pk500 wrote:That list looks like a collection of titles for sale on clearance at Best Buy.

I hope so, because if TOCA 3 isn't BC, then the chances of me getting an Xbox 360 in 2006 are pretty slim. I expect TOCA 3 to be my gaming monster, as I don't see how PGR 3 will touch it, gameplay- or realism-wise.

One final thought. I really feel bad for those who bought a lot of quality Xbox new releases over the last two or three months, figuring they could play them on their Xbox 360 at launch.
MS just gave those gamers acupuncture up the dirt chute.
Take care,

There are about 25 Xbox games I have that I would have wanted to see on this list. I'm glad the Halos, Grand Theft Autos, Ninja Gaiden and Prince of Persia made it. But how can the Splinter Cells, X-Men Legends and SW Battlefronts not have made the cut?
I was on the fence witht he 360 due to the price tag, an A+ Perfect Dark would have swayed me over...but this just closed the deal for me. Hell right now there are Xbox games I'm interested than there are 360 games.
(kudos to MS for making Jurassic Park Operation Genesis BC but I'm probably one of of 5 people who really like this game)

You know, for all the bitching here about the quality of the 360 videos, now current gen games look bad in comparison.
Saw the NBA 2K6 review on Xplay this past week and it looked really bad, probably because we'd been looking at all these 360 videos.
By next year, people won't miss the current gen games on their next gen consoles, assuming the prices on some of those launch games have come down.
Most of the features they've cut out of these launch games don't matter to me because they're mostly single-player things. Might be worth dealing with a feature-reduced launch game than booting up an old game, unless that upscaling works really well.
If it did work really well, then it would hurt sales of new games for the new consoles, which means lower game licensing royalties for the console makers.
BTW, it turns out that used game sales, especially by game stores and now Best Buy, is pissing off developers and publishers. Some of them view it as being almost as bad as piracy, because they see all the money being made on their games and they get none of it. Plus, used games take valuable shelf space from new games.
So whatever the console makers think of BC, the software publishers and developers can't be too happy with it if it encourages people to buy old previous gen. used games.

While I agree the BC list is poor, there are 2 things to remember:
1. It will grow over time.
2. It's not as if your original XBox magically stops working on the 22nd! Keep it (so, you don't get that $60 trade-in) and enjoy! You could even move it to another room so that you have another place to game if the wife/kids need to use the main TV.

Yeah, but by the same token, those devs releasing Xbox games post-360 launch will really want their games to be playable on the 360 I would assume, as that would lead to sales to 360 owners.wco81 wrote:So whatever the console makers think of BC, the software publishers and developers can't be too happy with it if it encourages people to buy old previous gen. used games.
Sure, a game like Madden which will have versions for both machines, or the 2K games, would want to force 360 owners to buy the 360 version, but for games for which there is no 360 version, I would think they would do whatever they can to make their Xbox games work on the 360.
The used games thing is very interesting. What the big publishers could do is force the big chain stores, like EB, to not sell used copies of their products by threatening to withhold new releases from them. However, the game stores clearly covet that used market, for obvious reasons, so they would fight. Could be a big battle brewing.

A lot of kids who work lower-paying jobs -- or older tightwads like me -- probably were factoring in the sale of an Xbox, for more than $60 on eBay, by the way, into their funding of an Xbox 360. Not everyone makes big cake.Sport73 wrote:2. It's not as if your original XBox magically stops working on the 22nd! Keep it (so, you don't get that $60 trade-in) and enjoy! Or that extra $60-100 would have went toward the purchase of a game or two for the 360. Now that plan may have been flushed down the toilet by this pretty crummy BC list released by MS.

PK

Exactly! There's nothing written that says you have to get rid of your Xbox. I'm glad I have 2 because now if I want to play Burnout or any other title that's not backward compatible, I can just go downstairs and play it in my den. I put one of my Xboxs on ebay this morning, but if I only had one, there's no way I'd get rid of it.Sport73 wrote:While I agree the BC list is poor, there are 2 things to remember:

And there are a bunch of EA games on the list- just no recent games that would potentially dissuade a gamer from plunking down money on the 360 version that is either out now or will be out in the near future.bdoughty wrote:I could have sworn MS said that EA games would be a high priority for BC?
Again, I think it's an overblown issue. I know virtually no one who made use of the PS2 backwards compatability- it's just not something that people really use once they've seen the step up in graphics.
For christ's sake people, this is just the INITIAL list! They supposedly will be updating this fairly frequently so don't count out Splinter Cell or SW:BF2 'bc' within a month or two (if that long).
They might not add to it at all either, but the fact is we have no idea and they have said that updates will occur constantly to the 'bc' list. So why is everyone so riled up? The list was not creared and targeted for a DSP popularity contest.

The difference with the PS2 BC is that there was no online gameplay back then. Now, with the 360 we're talking about games that people may still want to take online.Again, I think it's an overblown issue. Perfect example is NBA 2k6 for me. I'm over the top excited about the 360 version, but I'm in a league on the current gen game. I'd like to be able to dump my XBOX and continue to play in the league that I committed to.
TOCA and CMR 05 other great examples. Great games that people may still want to enjoy online, but are currently forced to keep their XBOX to do so.
For me an online component to a game greatly lengthens its shelf life.
Just my opinion.

I'm sure the reason for the craptacular games on the list is the fact that they were probably written with pretty standard coding and were easy to get up and running. Games like MotoGP 3 I'm sure use a lot of hardware/software tricks that make them much harder to convert to the new system. Give them time and I bet they'll get them converted.
Anyway, I can't wait to try out Halo 2, Jade Empire, and a few others on that list in HD with FSAA.

I believe there are only 2 games in my Xbox collection currently on that BC list.
