OT : File Sharing

Post by Inuyasha »

I dont know if this is allowed here but I have a question about file sharing.

I am looking for something like the old kazaa where you could get music off other file sharing sites. I know that kazaa and most everything else are pay sites now, but are there programs left out there that are still free?

Also, what is bit torrent? I've asked some people and they tell me to go with bit torrent, even though I have no idea what it is. Whats the difference between bittorrent and kazaa type of programs? Which is better? Well which is free!? I am just looking to download some old tunes .

Thanks.

Sorry Jared if this discussion is not allowed here.

For the novice it might just be best to stick with.

Since file sharing has legit uses and mainstream services use things like torrent files, it's not wrong to talk about unless you are specifically talking about illegal files.

Bit Torrent

Edonkey

File Sharing Programs like Kazaa
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File-sharing_program

Personally I stop using the file sharing programs a while back although ocassionally I pop onto LimeWire http://www.limewire.org/ Torrents are easy. Just download a program like Bitcomet and find a torrent site. The procedure is pretty simple and with a little digging you'll find nearly all of what you want.

An additional route to go would be to just hit up usenet through an archiving service like EasyNews. A little more complex but not that much more.

What tunes are you looking for? iTunes has over two million songs now. It would probably be a much easier route, unless you just have to steal them.

Here we go again ... Those who have never put a piece of recorded music they haven't purchased onto a blank tape may cast the first stone.

I just brought back my old casette collection of about 300 from high school and college from my mom's house. A lot of the tapes are old. Is it stealing if I download MP3's to replace some of the tapes?

I think as long as you own(have payed for) the song in one form or another you can download it for free from your neighborhood file sharing program.

I already am. I stole all those tapes from friends in the first place or used money that was really earned for famine relief.

Pk, have you used Limewire before?

That is what I currently use and if you have used both it and Bittorent and would recommend Bittorent over Limewire I would make the switch as well.

Any help is appreciated.

I have used Limewire and don't care for it, for these reasons:

1. Too many fake or truncated files.

2. Not enough albums. Just songs. I like getting entire albums with one push of a button.

3. Too popular. The prying eyes of the RIAA like Limewire ...

I agree. All I use now is Bit Torrent and Direct Connect in conjunction with a program like Peer Guardian. Limewire or Kazaa Lite are just too frustrating nowadays.

The Bit Torrent client I use is ABC.

I like BitComet for Bit Torrent because it's not a massive resource hog. BT can put quite a drain on your CPU, especially if your machine is older.

I've tried ABC, too. It's very solid.

Little birdie philosopher whispers: "BitTorrent is free and works with any player, Jack ... "

;)

Speaking of BitTorrent, I've dumped my long-time client, BitComet, for UTorrent 1.6. UTorrent is MUCH smaller and doesn't drain nearly as much RAM and other system resources when in use, and it's almost as fast as BitComet. All for legal use with academic and business files, of course. ;)
