1st Operation Flashpoint Review

Post by Diablo25 »

I figured some of you guys would like to see this. First review I've seen. Its from an Australian site...They liked it.

Military sim guys will love this...
It is important to make the distinction between Operation Flashpoint: Elite being a ‘Military Simulator’ and not a traditional First Person / Third Person Shooter (FPS/TPS). Attempting to play Operation Flashpoint: Elite as you would Halo 2 for instance will result in certain failure as ‘run-and-gun’ tactics just don't work. As an accurate simulation of military combat, you have to play Operation Flashpoint: Elite as if your own arse was on the line. When the rounds start flying you must get down low and get behind cover or you will soon find yourself dead. You can not survive many bullet or shrapnel wounds and on the harder difficulty levels, dying after only one shot is common…as in real life.

OK I've decided I'm definitely getting this one. Can't wait, really. What kind of modes are there for online?

Boing! I've been stoked for this game for about a month, and this early review is doing nothing to change that!

Zep, here's a rundown of the online modes from the developer's Web site:

<<<<<

Gameplay Modes

My Missions
Play with and against other people on missions that you have edited yourself.

Death Match
The goal is to kill all your opponents, nobody is your friend.

Team Death Match
The goal is to kill all your opponents, your team mates are your friends and you should avoid killing them.

Capture the Flag
The goal is to capture the opponents' flag and return it to your own flagpole (as well as killing your opponents if they get in your way).

Flag Fight
The goal is to capture the flag and/or kill those around you, everybody is a threat.

Cooperative
The goal is to complete pre-defined objectives, other players can make up your team-mates and your enemy is an AI force.

Team Mission
Each team has a separate goal they must achieve which is contrary to that of the opposing force.

Sector Control
The goal is for each team to fight to control certain sectors of the island.

Hold Location
There is a designated area of the map that a team must try to hold for a certain time, the enemy will fight to win the location and then hold it themselves.

>>>>>

Finally, the maps are f*cking HUGE in this game. The developer's Web site claims it takes 45 minutes of REAL TIME to walk from one end of the map to the other.

I'm in love ...

P.S.: Here's the developer's Web site, which has quite a bit of good information on the game: http://www.flashpointelite.com/index.php

Take care,
PK

11/8 I believe. Game looks good but Im on the fence on whether I want to get it. With the 360 coming in 3 weeks it doesn't seem like a smart thing to do. Definately a rent.

An Xbox version of the game was begun a long time ago and most gamers may have been forgiven for thinking that Codemasters had completely given up on the game. There had been little word on the console version of Flashpoint for some time. And here we are just weeks from the release of Xbox 360 and yet right in front of me, here in a little plastic jewel case, sits one of the finest games to grace the Xbox.
Review is here

Wow, great review. It really covers all the reasons I liked the PC game so much. And being able to create missions while in a lobby on Xbox Live? That rocks!

I'm heading out at lunch today to put my $5 down on it, to make sure I get a copy when it releases. I've held off getting Farcry and the new Brothers in Arms while I'm gearing up for the 360 release (lots of stuff heading to ebay to help pay for it!), but OF I'll get right away no questions asked. I think the guys who have never played it before are going to be in for a real treat.

I put my $5 down on OF last Friday, and while I was at EB they had a pre-owned copy of Farcry for $23, so I snagged it since I liked the demo. I must say I'm impressed, what a fun game. The single player is very cool and looks and runs great, and the map editor is a total blast.

I've created 3 maps so far; "Deliverence" a capture the flag in a swamp at night, "Waterworld" a capture the flag between small islands, and "The Hunt" a predator game in a steamy jungle. I tried a couple of other player maps online, but they weren't very good. Rows upon rows of grenades and rocket launchers, and poorly thought out environments that really seem to favor one side over another. I try to create balanced maps with an emphasis on the tactics needed, with only the amount of weapontry necessary to do the job.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone else has played it, but it's a lot of fun. Definitely helps pass the time until Flashpoint gets here in a couple of days!

Player Created maps on FarCry are either real good or pathetic. I personally love FarCry and I believe the game is underrated by this community especially. Look me up sometime "The Zlax45"

Well, today should be the day! Hopefully it comes in early since I need to go to our other plant today, and can slide over and pick it up on the way. And if I eat lunch at home I can get 15 minutes of gameplay in before I need to hit the road again. If I do I'll post some quick impressions.

Another solid review. And Flashpoint should have a dedicated, mature community on XBL because I can't imagine many Halo-boys taking to this game because of its complexity, realism and lousy graphics.

I hope my freebie copy arrives by the end of the week. I'm hounding my contact at Codemasters to the point where she'll probably never send me a free game again! :) Eager for your impressions, boys.

Take care,
PK

Did you pay $49.99 for it? Gamestop lists that price, while it is lower elsewhere.

I should be grabbing this one tonight too.
