If you want to play more of a sim experience there is no question to go with NHL2K6. Supposedly NHL06 plays a decent game of hockey but 2KSports makes the best hockey game.

If you like text sims, EHM 2005 is very fun and addictive.

May I also suggest NHL Hitz 2003 for a GREAT over the top arcade experience.

Pretty much second what everyone else has said about the 2006 games, though.

Bingo.

If you want a game that plays like the games you see on TV, NHL 2K6 is the clear choice.

What system do you play on? It's not as clear cut if you have a PS2. If you have a PS2 and want something in between a total sim and a total arcade game I'd recommend Gretzky 06. My personal choice of the year (and possibly the best hockey game ever) is NHL 2k6.

Thanks to all of you guys. I guess I'll be picking up NHL 2K6 tomorrow.
I like all of my sports games to be more of a simulation and to play as closely as possible to the real thing. I just started getting back into hockey the past week or so, after a 4 year hiatus. I have been playing MVP 06 since it's release (thanks to Madden's punt return issues) and need another sports game badly.
My only other question is does 2K6 play well out of the box, and what level provides the most realism? And by the way I have an Xbox.

Lots of sliders discussion on 2khockey.net, personally I am still looking for the closest setting in accordance to today's NHL rules, but in terms of game speed, 3-4 seem to be right on.

The "simulation" setting plays pretty good out of the box. Some minor tweaks can get you the type of game you're looking for.

Move over 2K6 the real simulation IS NHL 06

Just got posted today - I love reviews like this, if only the Periscope was still around. Come on PK just bring it back for old time sakes, just one last time.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. I never would have predicted that NHL 2K6 would get checked over the boards and onto the bench in such a grandiose fashion. The NHL 2K series, which in my opinion had a stranglehold on NHL games for so long, seems to have been done in by the loss of ESPN sponsorship as well as a completely inexplicable complacency in the department of upgrading and redesigning the game. Apparently, 2K Sports was completely content to rest on their laurels during the NHL off-season. It almost seems as if they were not expecting to make an NHL game this year, and once the NHL announced its return, they slapped a new badge on an old game and presented it like the new kid on the block. They might have gotten away with it too, had not EA Sports gone to work and produced what is probably the best hockey simulation since Sega's NHL '95. At its core, NHL 2K6 is not a bad game, but with such a great game sitting next to it in most video game stores, I’d be hard-pressed to spend even the lowered $20 price of admission to this year's NHL 2K6 rink. The NHL is definitely back and more fun than ever, and I’ll be buying my season tickets through EA Sports' NHL 06.

Thats Gold Jerry.... GOLD!

yup - agreed -- 2k6 for sim, Ea's for casual...

only question i have is with the new "no two line rule".. it seems very rarely I see the new style passing right now - am i doing something wrong with my offensive setup?

Nope. I don't think Kush programmed the skaters to aggressively cross the red line and head for the blue line in anticipation of a long pass from their defensive zone, probably because the rules changes were made so late into the development of the game.

I rarely make long passes from my defensive zone simply because my wings aren't going deep in the neutral zone looking for long passes. I did make a long two-liner last night in a game with some GREAT new sliders I found at 2khockey.net. Best sliders I've found so far even though they look absolutely wacky at first glance.

Take care,
PK

NHL 06 on the PC is actually a very good game now that the game has been mod'ed by someone named iam on the DMHN web site. The big complaint out of the box was that the CPU played too passively, didn't hit enough, and rarely took penalties. With iam's mod the game plays a pretty realistic game of hockey and the CPU is a lot more aggressive and will take penalties now. The stats and the gameplay are pretty darn close to the new and improved version of the real NHL this year.

Even with the mod though the goalies in NHL 06 still stack the pads too much and the one timers happen just a little too frequently. Other than that the game is very, very good this year when mod'ed properly.

Are those sliders flyermania's? If so, I have been using them too. I thought goalie sliders at 0 would lead into a ton of goals, but it hasn't so far. I have actually seen a good variety of goals with his sliders.I think I will stick with his sliders.I was getting good games with pengman's but I like these better. Each game has a different feel to it depending on what teams are playing.

Marino:

Yep, Flyermania's. And you're exactly right: Every game feels different, every game feels like the "new NHL," you must work for your goals, and you pay for your mistakes.

The only changes I've made are turning the One-Timer setting to Hard instead of Normal and dropping the Pass Aim assist slider to around 5.

With the One-Timer setting at Normal, one-timers from the high slot are easy money. I won a game 11-2 with it on Normal, with Primeau scoring four from the high slot.

Passing is WAY too telepathic and accurate with the Pass Accuracy slider and Pass Aim Assist maxxed out. I'm not one of these guys who plays with Pass Accuracy and Pass Aim Assist at 0, but there has to be some challenge with passing.

Otherwise, these sliders are pure gold. There are some really good slider sets at 2khockey.net, but nothing approached the brilliance of Grog's All-Star settings for NHL 2K5 until I played these.

Once I turned the One-Timer setting to Hard, I lost 6-2 as Philly against Tampa, lost 2-0 as Phoenix against Florida (f*cking Luongo!) and beat Toronto, 4-3, as Montreal as Souray pinched in from the point and put a beautiful wrister over Belfour's shoulder from the middle of the right circle on a power play with about 1:30 left in the game. It was an incredible game.

For those curious about these sliders, here's the thread:

http://www.2khockey.net/forums/index.ph ... opic=13217

My only recommended changes are to turn One-Timers to Hard and drop Pass Aim Assist to 5 or lower.

Take care,
PK

the variety of goals i have seen too makes 2k6 great.. i had one (against me thou) where DiPietro stops the puck, but then it bounds into the air to the right where the guy was standing who put it in...
