Where would you rank Joe Gibbs among todays NFL coaches?
Few people have noticed but Joe Gibbs is coaching a 4-2 Redskin team that is ranked in the top five in offense and defense. Mark Brunell and Santana Moss are having career years in Gibbs offense and the Redskins share 1st place in the tough NFC East.
Gibbs is in year 2 of his return and appears to be up to his old ways. Is he among the best coaches in football? Im curious how he is viewed among non-Redskin fans.

I'd consider him one of the best. I think it also is attributed to the soft early season schedule for the Skins, but he's getting back into the swing. Obviously it took him a little longer to get acclimated to the "new" game, but he's doing just fine and I'd probably put him in the top 10 for now. Wait until the season is about 10 weeks old to start calling the Redskins legit though.
I mean they beat the three teams with average records (Bears, Cowboys, and 49ers) and lost to the two teams with winning records (Broncos, Chiefs). The only team they beat that's worth anything is the Seahawks. That's a pretty weak schedule. And by saying they are in first in the very tough NFC East...they might want to play more than 1 division game before you even use that.
But to answer your question...yes Gibbs is one of the best. He turned what looked to be a pretty average team into a pretty good one thus far.

Has Gibbs really re-made the team though?
Skins had all those high draft picks for years, which form a big part of their team. Not to mention all of Snyder's machinations.
I'm sure he still knows football. Does he have power over personnel?
Whose decision was it to make the big Portis-Bailey trade? Whose decision on Sean Taylor? Who made the Coles-Moss trade? Who brought over Brunell?
I know in the '80s, a lot of credit went to Bethard.
All that said, looks like most of the coaching decisions are working for him this year. Of course a couple of those NFC East teams will fall off or likely miss the playoffs.

I hate the Giants as much as anyone, but I was pretty saddened by the loss of Wellingotn Mara.
He was a true giant of the game, and if it weren't for him the NFL would probbably be a second-rate league. But his vision and belief in the health of the league as a whole, not just his team, led directly to the parity-driven wonder that is Rozelle's NFL.
Thank you Mr. Mara.
We'll consider this payback for last year's 31-7 game at FedEx. I can't wait for Christmas Eve. . . .

34 said best he's seen. I don't think he's old enough to remember Lombardi. I barely am and I'm about the oldest phart on this board.packmanuk04 wrote:A top 5 without Lombardi ?XXXIV wrote:I would rank Joe Gibbs as the best coach Ive seen.
3 superbowl championships with 3 different qbs and 3 diferent feature backs.
1)Gibbs
2)Belichik
3)Parcels
4)Shula
5)Walsh
I am suprised Tom Landry doesn't get more love. Here's a guy with a long and distinguished record, who was an innovator on both offense and defense. Even beginning with an expansion team and with a number of sub-par seasons at the end, he's almost 100 games over .500.
Yep...never saw Vince.sfz_T-car wrote:34 said best he's seen. I don't think he's old enough to remember Lombardi. I barely am and I'm about the oldest phart on this board.packmanuk04 wrote:A top 5 without Lombardi ?XXXIV wrote:I would rank Joe Gibbs as the best coach Ive seen.

Tom would have been #6.
And to think Landry and Lombardi were coordinators on the same Giants team. I can't remember which was O and which was D, but the head coach sure had an easy job!!sfz_T-car wrote:I am suprised Tom Landry doesn't get more love.
