Go to the 2khockey.net forum and use Q*bert's penalty settings. Drop his interference slider anywhere from two to four clicks depending on your preference, and you're golden.

He really has nailed the penalties in the "new NHL."

That 2khockey.net forum is a gold mine of info. for NHL 2K6. Hardcore players and really knowledgable hockey guys who are extremely welcoming of new people who treat that board and its members with intelligent respect. A very good place.

Cool, I am going to try it tonight.... Thanks for the tip!

I tried QBert's penalty settings and there are definately lots of penalties. Takes some getting used to but its the same case with the new NHL. Last night I had, I think, 10 penalties called in my game. 7 on me, 3 on CPU. The thing that annoys me is that most, if not al,l of the penalties called on me were by guys I wasn't controlling.

Diablo:

Yeah, that's true, but I'm cool with that. If I'm playing with the Leafs, for example, I would expect more calls on Domi even if I was controlling Kaberle.

I'm just happy to see penalty totals that mirror the "new NHL." Now I just wonder how many slider gurus have built slider sets with realistic SOG totals in games that don't have a lot of penalties because the SOG's definitely will increase with these penalty sliders due to the extra power plays.

I gave them a try too, and Diablo I agree with you, there's definitely more penalty calls but I am not so sure I want to be penalized for a player I did not control. Too many interference calls in my games so I have to change that slider a bit. I think Qbert had it set up to max, so I'll bring that down.

Yeah, Qbert's interference setting is at 30, which is too high. Default is 22, I believe; try 24 or 26. That's working well for me.

PK / Others.

Hey fellas, I'm really starting to dig this game offline as well. I have one question for you. It seems as if my defense takes like 3 days to enter the offensive zone. I'm finding myself wanting to (or needing to) cycle the puck back to the point, only to have them closer to center ice than the blue line.

After using Venoms sliders for a few games I have switched over to Pengmans sliders and have had really exciting games. Qberts penalty settings are also a nice addition.

Any suggestions?

I just picked up this game...I have played 1 game against the computer and scored 8 goals with 6 being wraparounds...How do I stop this from happening. Is this a huge problem?

Don't use the Default settings. Use the Sim settings, at the All-Star skill level. You won't score six wraps in one game.

Is it me or has this game become the consummate slider fest? I haven't picked it up yet, but to see that guys are still tinkering with sliders doesn't give me a good feeling.

Tsu:

NHL 2K6 plays a pretty damn good game of hockey out of the box on the Sim settings. You can just change the CPU speed burst setting to equal that of the human, and it's fine and fun for most people.

But I'm a hockey zealot -- LOVE the sport -- so I'm going to tweak the sliders in a hockey game way more than I would with any other sport.

I think there are a few others here at DSP like me. NHL 2K6 isn't as brilliant out of the box as Winning Eleven 8. But then again, what game is?

But NHL 2K6 plays a pretty damn good game of hockey -- way better than NHL 06 -- right out of the box on the Sim settings with just one simple tweak, making the CPU and human speed burst settings equal.

PK

Do we have a DSP online league for this game? I would be interestered in like an 8 team league with 10 games and one game playoff series or something like that.

More good numbers for the month of October in case you're still searching for accurate stats on which to base sliders:

I'll second that thanks.

I'd been so frustrated with the game - using a hybrid of Pengman's sliders - I'd pretty much taken a week off and stopped going to 2khockey.net.

But I plugged these in last night and played three games in a row - loving it. Great work by flyermania, great work on the minor adjustments. Goalies are the best I've seen in terms of realism. I can hold the offensive zone, and I'm punished for lousy defense.

I have my own made up sliders, based on the Sim Default, leaving it in Pro, and tweaking the boost, along with a few other ones (shot blocking, goalie sliders, etc.)

I actually haven't compared my stats with the "real world", but I think it's kinda fruitless anyway, since 99% of the games in a franchise are simmed anyway.

But, I've been having fun regardless. I recently went on a 5 game winning streak, thought "ok, this is getting too easy", and now I'm on a 2 game losing streak without having changed a thing!

I might try to bump up the scoring another goal or two a game, but that would be about it.

Take it easy on that hand, you dick! Let Dom do the dirty work for the next week or so, and then take over! :)

Don't thank me -- thank Flyermania! There really are some quality guys who know their hockey in the forums over at 2khockey.net. A very helpful community with an excellent vibe over there.

Good liders PK, I adjust them up and down a notch every couple games for a change. My only gripe with the 2K games is I'm always shorthanded more than I am on the power play. My computer players take penaltys but I get dumped, hooked, slashed and no calls.

I don't know if this is real or Penguin paranoia. If I use the Pens gameplan I'm noticing I'm more shorthanded than using other teams. My theory was shot down somewhat using other teams and Pens strategy playing exhibition but I'm still shorthanded. The bottomline is If I kick up the penalty sliders there is more special team play, but I'm still short handed more and being demised by my computer linemates. Any slider I can change? I've adjusted the hitting power to zero and I'm still blasting guys.

After owning the game for a few months now and playing a fair share of games both on and offline, I wanted to see the following to be improved next season or hopefully (although unlikely) on the 360.

The "catch up effect" that the CPU seems to enjoy (no matter what speedburst you use) is abit cheesy. Whenever I get a step on the CPU heading to the net, a guy like Eric Cairns shouldn't be able to turn on the jets to catch J. Sakic just like that! Not real.

Too many sliders can result in several problems. It's a simple rule of chaos theory ,too many objects interacting together creates too many variables to be able to control. Hence, why the bugs in the game.

The CPU never scores in a shootout, This is a big one since shootouts are a huge part in Hockey now.
Faceoffs: What's up with the CPU going for a coffee whe the ref is about to drop the puck? Not often mind you but when you see it, it's like WTF?

If you scratch/send down a player and dress someone else ALL the lines are messed up. Arrghh!

And finally, the infamous wraparound. I can generally stop them, but the computer still manages to get a crap wrap around that really f***s it up for me. The goalie is extremely poor at playing these.

2K6 is "THE" Hockey game in town for another year, they are so close to make me saying "BEST" but they always leave me with a "BUT"...
For just $20 though, I look forward to 2K7 and maybe the 360 version in the future (if it's not going for $60 or $50 for that matter), in the meantime, I am still tweaking for the best SIM possible scenario.

BTW, for those that want to update the rosters, flyermania has the latest as of NOV 07:

Can they make a game where the CPU controlled players go for a loose puck? This frustrates the hell outa me.

And how about D-men standing you up at the blue line?

2K6 is the best hockey game ever but it shows how bad hockey games have been because it still has a ways to go.

Has anyone had a decent shootout? I don't even control my goalie and can stop the CPU...literally. I purposely controlled my goalie to end a shootout the other day because I made it two times the entire roster without any team scoring. That's happened to me twice.

Sorry if this covered already. This thread is getting long :D

I've read at the 2Khockey.net forum that if you make the aggression slider (or whatever it's called) the same for both teams in the team strategy section, you'll get an equal amount of penalties.

I'm seeing games where I commit a lot of penalties and games where I'm on the PP a lot, so I haven't needed to tinker with this.

But give it a try if you're still seeing an imbalance.
