I'll be happy for at least one person if the Cardinals win...Phil Cuzzi. ESPN showed some of the hate mail Don Denkinger received from Cards fans after 1985 (and he got a lot so I don't want to hear that it's just a few rotten apples). Scary stuff.

There are crazed fans in every city. You can't expect every fan to be well behaved and polite. There are fanatics in every city. In general, the majority of Cardinal fans are tremendous.

Dekinger has been back in St. Louis a couple times now for charity events. The first time I believe was for a golf tournament. He received a wonderful applause from hundreds of St. Louisans. He was taken aback by the sincerity and warmth from several lifelong Cardinal fans.

I always find it amusing people judge an entire fan base on a couple rotten apples. The Cardinals draw 3 million fans every year. Attend a game at Busch Stadium and you'll quickly realize how tradition rich and knowledgeable the fans are.

Cardinals have the best fans in baseball...it's been stated many times. Don't forget the Cardinals have a wider following than just St. Louis too.

When did I ever judge the *entire* fan base? You are proof there is at least one decent Cardinals' fan and I'm sure there are more out there :D

Wow! Pujols is clutch...and clutch is everything!

The script was written once Eckstein got that seeing eye single. However, you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT WALK EDMONDS!! Not with Pujols on deck. You make him beat you. Once he gets on, I think you walk Pujols and take your chances with Sanders (who looked awful in his at bat to end the inning).

Unbelievable win for he Cards. I think the Astros have the advantage with Oswalt and Clemens going for the next two. But mentally, they have to be cracking. To be 1 strike away and not win is a lot to deal with. They might put more pressure on themselves and tighten up while the Cards are playing with house money and can play loose and relaxed.

And if it does go 7, the Cards beat Clemens last year, so they will not feel intimidated.

You could hear Pujols's balls clanging together as he rounded the bases. What a way to recharge your team.

It's ashame that such a gut punch to the Stros had to come from a team I dislike even more.

Probably because you NEVER walk someone and put the winning run on base. It was the right move, it was a horrible hanging breaking ball. The first slider Lidge threw to Pujols was great...it made him look silly. Then he went ahead and hung one and Pujols made Lidge look silly.

Former Houston manager Larry Dierker on Cardinal fans:

"There are a few other parks where many fans wear home team colors, but none where they give the visitors as much respect. I remember getting a polite round of applause coming off the mound after a shutout in St. Louis. When Roger (Clemens) came off the mound last week, they gave him a standing ovation. I've seen them cheer for a great play by their opponent. I have never seen a single ugly incident like a streaker, a fight, or a fan throwing something on the field in St. Louis."

To be fair, he must have missed the time an umpire tossed McGwire during his run to 70. The fans threw loads of debris onto the field, and it got very ugly. The next day, Jack buck took the fans to task for their behavior, and demanded the fans apolgize by cheering for the umpires. In that game, St. Louis gave an long, loud ovation to the umpires.

I guess St. Louis does have a problem with umpires, but in the big picture, the players consistently rank St. Louis fans the best, or second to Boston, in the country. They get credit for treating the visiting players well, and for understading the game better. I'm sure that makes St. Louis fans just that much more popular with other fans around the league.

Now, I'm sure Cuzzi is not going to enjoy his next visit to St. Louis.

Yep, f*** Berkman and his weak ass homeruns in that joke of a park!

Pettite did balk, but who cares now.. its back to a real park baby!!!!!!!

Thank you Pujols!!!
Wow, you really take winning with such class and dignity....

For the record, I have seen Berkman hit homeruns as far as Pujols did last night OVER the train tracks in LF.

If Pettitte balked, why didn't they call it?

Kudos to Pujols. Why Garner did not insist that Lidge walk him is beyond me. Game 5 over, Game 6 Wednesday....
You know I was at a bar with a bunch of friends, became friends with people I didn't know and was quite a bit emotional last night after that hit. Yeah my post was a bit like a two year old, get over it.

I didn't want the season to end on that fly ball homerun by Berkman.. and yeah, I'm a bad Cardinals fan.. boo-hoo.

Hmmm, then why would Garner tell Lidge it was okay to walk him? Pujols hits EVERYONE. Sanders, while a threat, is nowhere near the threat Pujols is. After last night, if Houston gives him ANYTHING NEAR the plate, they might as well nmot even get on the plane for Busch Stadium....

Not only that, you never put the tying run into scoring position. Walking Pujols would have loaded the bases putting Eck and Edmonds at third and second respectively. A base hit would have tied it.

While I agree, a tie would have been better than the alternative. I know it is easy to say what we would have done the day after it happened, but I cannot help but think that pitching to the most dangerous hitter in MLB was the wrong way to go....

What gibberish? Do you seriously doubt that Phil Cuzzi's life would not be threatened should the Cards lose? I'm basing it on past history. There is at least one Cardinals fan that still sends Denkinger a daily postcard and some of the mail he received was way over the line...threatening a man's kids over a bad call

I don't know, it's just common baseball knowledge. As Scoop said, you're also putting the tying runs in scoring position...a single by Reggie and it's tied anyway. Sure, Pujols is the best hitter in baseball, but you don't walk the winning run on base, regardless of who's up next.

Man, I never realized how similar Chicago baseball fans and Astros fans are. After having your heart ripped out so many times you start to expect the worst. You put up walls and dare not believe anything good will happen to make sure the pain isn't as bad when it inevitably does. Anyone remember a post I made during the final stretch of the season when the Sox were clinging to a 2 1/2 game lead? Keep the faith Astros fans. Dreams can come true.

I see yours and Scoop's points. Guess I need to just get over it and move on. MAN, I feel like I was a deer that had just been field dressed last night after that game.....

While Lidge was most likely trying to be too perfect in his pitches to Edmonds, in the back of his mind he was probably thinking he didn't want Jimmy to beat him. Edmonds has a flair for the dramatics as evident in last year's playoff games.

The pitch that Albert hit was obviously a mistake pitch. I'm sure Lidge meant for the slider to break off the plate. If Pujols is going to hit one out, he's going to have to hit the ball out to right field. Unfortunately, for Lidge the ball didn't break enough and it was too up in the zone. Albert couldn't have gotten a better pitch to hit.

I gotta think Lidge lost a great deal of confidence. Even before the homerun, the game in which Mabry doubled home a run in which the Cards fell short at least proved Lidge is mortal.

By the way, if any Cardinal fan said they felt confident with Isringhausen going out to pitch the 9th with a one run lead, I'd call bulls**t. Remarkably, the Houston batters looked over anxious.
