MLB Playoffs

Post by PadresFan104 »

The Padres are in!

Yeah, I know that most of the country is rolling their collective eyes at our 79-79 record, but damn, it feels good to be in the playoffs again. The Padres have winning records against both the Braves and Cardinals this year, so I like our chances in the first round. Just hoping that we get hot and the other teams get cold..

Well, the Cards are certainly cold right now. The result of clinching the division early inevitably may turn out to be their demise. I hope not as they couldn't have gotten a better first round opponent than the Padres. Of course, the Padres have the better overall record versus the Cards this year.

I'm not as optimistic as I was a year ago.

As are the Braves...nothing like limping into the playoffs. In the year of the rookie...I'll still take it though.

At least you guys can rest easy this weekend.

Nothing against the Padres, they did what they had to do to make it, but it kinda sucks that somebody in the AL is gonna finish with at least 92 wins (probably more) and not make it.

Just because the Padres are going to win the arguably the worst division in the history of baseball doesn't mean they didn't deserve it....well maybe it does.

Can't really argue with that, though it sure would be fun to have the last laugh...

Who will make it, Yanks or Redsox? BlueJays owned Boston this year and they beat them again last night, so Redsox are a game behind.

My prediction:

Yankees win the East, Red Sox and Tribe tie for the wildcard, forcing a Monday playoff game, and somebody on the Tribe steps up and does their Bucky Dent impersonation.

Coco F***ing Crisp has a nice ring to it, no?

Or perhaps Travis F***ing Hafner, Grady F***ing Sizemore or Jhonny F***ing Peralta.

Steve Phillips on Espn Radio suggested that Tim Wakefield start al 3 games vs the Yankees this weekend.

We was kidding, but right know, the Red Sox's rotation(and bullpen) is a mess.

I'm pretty sure Wakefield would say yes if asked.

Wow, just as I thought the Jays were going to win again, Dave Ortiz comes thru in the last inning with a single to score an RBI and keep Boston just a game behind the Yanks. Huge single I might say, going to the final 3 games 2 games behind would have been an almost done deal.

The Orioles might as well have just forfeited their games against the Yankees this week.

Personally, I am pulling for Cleveland. While the Yankees - Red Sox will be a fun series to watch, I don't care who wins it.

And on a side note, here's my vote for Eric Wedge as manager of the year, and Mark Shapiro as GM of the year. Wedge has done a masterful job of blending 1rst full year players Sizemore,Peralta,Crisp, into the lineup, kept them on an even keel, despite poor starts from V. Martinez,Boone, and Blake.
What Shapiro has done, tearing this team apart in 02,rebuiding the farm system(AAA,AA,A all made the playoffs) and boldly stated back then, the Tribe would contend in 05,is definitely impressive.
With all due respect to Ozzie Guillen, what Wedge has done with a very young team should get him quite a few votes.

Now that the Sox won the Central I'd like to see the BoSox take 2 out of 3 from the Yankees and the Indians take 2 out of 3 from the Sox and see 2 extra playoff games. :)
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.

I have to agree abotu Eric Wedge for Manager of the Year. I remember going to Pawtucket Red Sox games and Eric Wedge was a staple in the Pawtucket lineup for at least 3 or 4 years. It seemed like he could never take the next step to the Majors. He worked his butt off down there trying but couldn't do it. It is nice to see him succedding as a manager now. :D

I had a question for the baseball experts. NY won the East today but is only up 1 game. If Bos wins tomorrow, they be tied and shouldnt they play a 1 game playoff?

I am assuming this is due to a tiebreaker but in the past, baseball never had tiebreakers. Whenever 2 teams tied at the season, a playoff occured.

Can one of you explain to me when tiebreakers were introduced in baseball? Why change this? It would have been classic if Boston won tomorrow and forced a one game playoff.

Through a quirk in baseball's rules, the Yankees won the division because of Cleveland's loss to Chicago in the AL Central. The loss by the Indians eliminated the possibility of a three-way tie -- and an unprecedented two-game, three-team tiebreaker -- and gave New York the East by virtue of their 10-8 record against Boston.

If Boston loses on Sunday and Cleveland wins, they will meet at Fenway Park on Monday to decide the AL's last playoff berth. If Cleveland loses on Sunday, the Red Sox get the wild-card berth no matter what they do.

Only baseball would have rules that most of the players and fans don't even know about. I absolutely *HATE* this rule. Leave the tiebreakers for football.

Basically, MLB does not want a useless playoff to decide who won the division and who was the wild card. Both teams would be in the playoffs thus the managers likely would not be interested in winning the game instead of setting up their rotation.

Looks like Boston will get the wild card...

But I'm hoping for the Indians to win tomorrow, Red Sox lose, and then with a tie game in the top of the 9th of the one game playoff, Aaron Boone goes deep over the monster and beats them again. :D

Thanks for the explanatation. This just adds to another dumb thing baseball had done to keep distancing itself from what made the sport once great.

One special thing about baseball history was that there was no such thing as a tiebreaker. Those 1 game playoffs at the end of the season were special things that you would see maybe once or twice in a decade. I mean who wouldn't like to see a 1 game playoff with Boston and the Yankees. If these rules were in place in the past, would we ever had heard of a Bucky Dent, a Bobby Thomspon, or other season end playoff hero's?

Not when both teams are in the playoffs. I doubt even the Red Sox would want it, since they'd have to burn a pitcher.
