just for the heck of it, I decided to bump up the level on NHL06 (PC version) to "difficult"......I also tweaked some other settings: lowered AI pass frequency a few notches, raised aggression all the way, made shot accuracy, shot & pass power all zero, turned up interceptions and AI dump freq all the way, lowered poke checking to 1 and it's almost like a different game. The AI is not so loosey goosey now and it's difficult to get clean shots on goal. They will steal the puck from you....intercept your passes and even hit more. My hit totals for 2 games were almost even for both sides. The AI now will make you pay on giveaways and if your goalie gets out of position, they will bury it. I just played 3 games on these settings and lost 3-2, 5-2, and 4-2, but the games were so competitive and fun. I think some folks gave up on this too quick. If you turn up the difficulty level you HAVE to lower the AI pass frequency or they just tick tack toe passes all night long. The combination of the highest difficulty level and the lower pass frequency makes them play very smartly.
I urge anyone who still has this game to try out these settings....you will be amazed. I think I stumbled onto perfect slider settings for this game.
If anyone is interested, I will post my complete settings if you want to try them. I just think everyone has already given up on this game

Not me... I haven't tried it yet. I'm just watching for posts like yours that say the game can be tweaked to get rid of some of the issues others are seeing. I can deal with weird puck physics like some are seeing, this doesn't make or break a game for me. But the lack of CPU aggression would drive me BONKERS, and the crazy tic-tac-toe AI lightspeed passing would make me throw my controller.
So, I'm just not in a hurry to get it right away. Those of you with it can do the work and when you're done, if it's good, I'll pick up the game (for PC right?) and join you online.
Key question: Can these settings be used in EASO online games?
I'm still trying out NHL 06, and playing on difficult as well with things like pass interceptions turned all the way up. Although the gameplay is still firmly arcade, most of my games are of the 4-3 variety, with about 50 combined shots, which I am happy with. I am even getting outhit by the computer. My only issue right now is that the computer gets too many breakaways, so I may try tuning down their boost slider. I mean the Flyers defense is slow, but not that slow.
As for downloads, http://nhldepot.net/ has some stuff, but double minor downloads (don't have the URL here) has more. I can post it a little later when I get home.

Scoop.....here is pretty much what I did....although I tried the same setting with my xbox version as with the PC version and the PC version seems to play better and less arcadey. Not sure if it's my imagination or what?

then stick with the PC version. I am. I just rented the xbox version to check it out online and since you HAVE to play with default speed (way too fast) for a ranked game, that ruined that. THE PC version looks amazing and plays great with these settings. Try them on your PC and tell me what you think. The hit totals are almost always even now and the AI plays a tough D. I haven't scored more than 3 goals in a game with these settings yet.
I saw someone on another board messing around with player's resist penalties attributes and said they were getting pretty good results. I gave it a shot myself and used NHL View to lower all player's resist penalties attribute by 15 points. I also increased the fighting frequency for a few players per team. It took me maybe 15 minutes to adjust Anaheim through Colorado and with 2 minutes worth of slider adjustments I am seeing pretty good results.
I've got the game such that the CPU will play more aggressively in their defensive zone and will attack me in the corners and behind the net a bit more also. The CPU is getting on average about the same number of penalties as I am getting and the CPU is also getting similar numbers of hits that I am getting as well. Shot toals are varied but on average the CPU is getting roughly a similar number of shots that I am depending on the teams playing.
With a little bit of slider adjustments and editing this game plays fairly good hockey. Passing is still a little too pin point and fast but with the right sliders it's not crazy. Goalies stack the pads a little bit too much too but it's not too bad. I am not seeing any money goals after playing dozens and dozens of games either which is key.
good slider jack, problem with the game is there is only one master set of sliders, who in the world thinks we play the same as the CPU? anyways i had a good game until they opened me up for 5 goals, i lost 5-1 i know last year someone modded a .DV file and it made the game almost ok, so i hope someone can tone the passing down, other then that it was great. Still not 2k6!
Tried your sliders Jack and I'm just not seeing it. The cpu didn't hit me once and I was pretty much free to skate around the perimeters. I'm hoping for a modded file to really take care of the issues this game has.

I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Sccop......is this with the PC or console version? not sure if the PC version is a bit more "sim-like". Anyway, I saw a big difference going from "medium" to "difficult". On Medium I could skate around almost at will and the D would give me lots of room. On difficult, they strip the puck, poke check and hit me a whole lot more. Makes the game much more challenging. Did you max out "agression"?

Hoser..........why not use NHL View to cure all the problems? Can't you lower passing speed for all players? I the "resist penalties" the key to making the player hit more? Isn't there a "toughness" or "hitting" attribute? Is there an attribute for goalies "flopping". If so, lowering that would do a world of good also.

It's the PC version and I followed your settings to a t. I could still skate at will in the offensive zone and wasn't hit at all.

i must suck a bit but i did better on med. then difficult only because they attacked me more, i only had 17 shots the whole game while the CPU had 36. So it is true that the CPU is tougher on defense. i agree a comfy middle level between med and difficult would be nice.

It's possible that adjusting other attributes will affect various gameplay issues. I just haven't tried messing with them all yet.
That article just confirms what most of us have known for years...NHL 94 has always been and always will be the king of video hockey games. I could have sworn that NHLPA 93 was in the Swingers movie though.

LOL. Messier scores 5 goals. What was the score of the games you played in NHL 94? 10-9, 11-7 and stuff?
I agree it was fun, but nowadays we'd shred any game that yielded those scores consistenly, and had slapshots breaking the glass a few times per game.

I don't know what settings that guy was using. I've been playing NHL '94 on the PSP quite a bit and never had scores like that.

I played over 1000 games of NHL94(battery backup still works) and I don't ever remember having highscoring games like that. Once in awhile you had the occasional 8-2 thrashing but that was about it for me.
I have been having some FUN games at these settings.....4-3, 5-4, etc
almost always comes down to the 3rd period. If you don't exploit the games weaknesses and try and set up plays, it's very rewarding. If you just rush up and down the ice, it's not a lot of fun. Now that a compatible version of NHL View is out there, I can't wait until the mod-ers fine tune this game!

I find the game extremely fun no matter what style you play. I guess i'm in the minorty but good hockey to me is up and down, run and gun. Thats exciting hockey and thats what the NHL is hoping to deliver this year.
