I'm blowing off NHL 06 because I want a sim, and NHL 06 isn't even close to a sim. It's a closer cousin to NHL 2005 than NHL 2004.

It's a decent game if you want an arcade experience minus the big hits. If you seek anything resembling a sim and find enjoyment in those kinds of games, such as Winning Eleven 8, then NHL 06 is not the ice ticket this year.

I guess I missed the part of the new NHL rules that bans checking, pinning and tying up players along the boards, because all of those elements are MIA in NHL 06. I guess I missed the supplement that all NHL players are wolfing down in camp this year to make their passes look like tic-tac-toe on crack and let them crank 89-mph wrist shots from beneath the circles.

NHL 06 might be fun for some. But it's not hockey, at least not NHL hockey.

Take care,
PK

You are so full of sh*t that your eyes are turning brown.

Let's check off the EA games that I have praised this year:

MVP. Check. Ranks with High Heat 2004 and Interplay Sports Baseball 2000 as the best baseball game I've ever played.

NCAA 06. Check. Own it. Love it.

Madden 06. Check. Said that other than the "giveaway glitch," which ruins the game for me, it's the best football game on the market.

NASCAR 06. Check. Said the Total Team Control was useless and that the handling could be puzzling, but the game is NASCAR 2005.5, which isn't such a bad thing.

So I have no idea where the f*ck you're getting off saying I dislike EA games other than selective reading, fanboyism or pure ignorance on your part.

As for defending myself, yeah, when some little prick at OS calls me a fanboy because I've made some of the most detailed impressions of anyone in that f*cking IMPRESSIONS -- impressions, not appreciation -- thread, and those impressions are negative, hurting the little sh*theel's feelings, then yeah, I'm going to defend myself.

Just like I'm going to defend myself against someone who claims I have an anti-EA bias with absolutely no justification. All I can guess is that you possibly rerouted your colon through either your fingertips or mouth this morning, because you're typing/talking some serious sh*t here.

Take care,

I'm getting tons of checking using the Ybuttons and the Left trigger button. That left trigger button when skating backwards throws the best hipchecks i've ever seen in any video hockey game.

Reading is fundamental: My complaints have centered around the lack of checking, tying up and pinning by the CPU.

well my eyes are brown but maybe that last part of that post was a little tongue in cheek don't ya think. I know you've bought a ton of EA games this year. When I made the Anit EA comment in the other thread I followed it up with a smiley or at least I thought i did.

Damn...Paul was really getting into with the people on OS...over a damn game!! TOO f***in FUNNY!!! People are liking NHL06 and Paul is trashing it as much as he can!! PK is not a happy man when people give props to EA!
thats not true at all. Paul wouldn't have bought the game at all if he hated EA as u claim. He really WANTED it to be good....that's why he gave it a shot in the first place.

Tim.......next time you play, just keep skating across the crease until the goalie flops and then roof the puck for easy goal after easy goal. Then tell me it's still "fun".

Jack,

You're a thread or two late.....I KNOW THIS. WHERE DID I CLAIM THAT PAUL HATED EA? I was referring to his knockdown dragout with the posters over at OS.

And that's why I made two goddamned trips to EB yesterday, returning NHL 2K6 for NHL 06 in what is shaping up to be my gaming mistake of the year.

You said he's not happy unless he's trashing EA......same thing. Either way, I wouldn't waste my time with those kids on the OS boards Paul. Not worth it. Stick to giving s*** to the good folks here at DSP :)

I haven't tried 2K6 yet, but if I can score like that every time, then that wouldn't be fun either. From all the reports I have read, I have only seen a few mentions about an occasional wrap-around goal........and at least you have to fight your way down the ice to get there. In EA's game, they roll out a red carpet all the way to the crease.

Has anyone tried the PC version? Have any impressions been posted anywhere yet? If the game can be "fixed", the modding community will do it.

Oh well, glad I haven't picked up either game yet because it sounds like there are issues with both. I can wait a few more days until the dust settles.

I went back to the store today and the manager was nice enough to put in 2k6 to try. I'll post those impressions in the other thread.

But talking to manager , he told me he played nhl06 all night yesterday. He said he loved it because he had so much fun. I asked him what his scores were and he said they were around the 9-8 range. Sounds like lots of offense in this game. But I am betting he was playing on the default difficulty.

And do you think that's SIM hockey, albeit all the new rules and changes this year? It's fun alright what you score so many goals, but that's just the arcade part of the game if you asked me.

If you play 5 minute periods on medium with decently adjusted sliders then 9-8 games won't happen much if at all. In fact, I had a 0-0 game last night and lost in OT with 45 seconds left. Raycroft and Aebischer played great and the shots were 30-24 for the CPU.

I have seen the situations where you can get the goalie to go down and then roof it but at least with the PC version and sliders I have it doesn't happen all that often and it's not all that easy to just skate across the low slot without losing the puck. The CPU will give you room in the corners and behind the net but when I try and go to the net with the puck, or when I pass the puck to a player in the slot, the CPU will definitely attack the puck carrier.

Also, PK made a statement earlier about how the goalie only covers the puck once or twice a game. What system are you playing on and what level are you playing. Also, what's your goalie cover frequency slider set at? On the PC, medium level, with goalie cover frequency one or two notches from the right I am seeing the CPU goalie cover the puck a lot. Perhaps 20 to 30 times a game in fact. You obviously have to go to the net and look for a rebound or an errant pass but if you do that then the CPU goalie covers the puck all day long.

The biggest complaint I have is the CPU does play too passive and will let you gain the blue line and control the corners too much. However, you can't score from the corners and when you go to the net, or pass the puck to a man in the slot, the CPU will attack the puck carrier. It's not a huge problem but it does feel a bit like a power play even at even strength.

It is nice that NHL 06 doesn't freeze (at least for me), I can't score by morphing the puck through the back of the net, the wrap arounds aren't too easy, and I can change lines before a faceoff relatively easily.

NHL 06 isn't a great game but it is a lot of fun and does present a decent game of hockey. NHL2K6 presents a good, not great but good, game of hockey as well. I think the beauty is in the eye of the beholder and both games are good enough to offer hockey video gamers a choice this year.

I am pretty certain he was probably playing on one of the easy levels from what he was describing. He was probably playing against human and not cpu.

Xbox, medium or difficult, goalie cover frequency slider set two clicks from the max, I believe. I should have maxxed it and maybe would have seen better results.

Take care,

the worst I got beat last night was 6-3....other than that it was pretty much 4-2 or 5-2. I lost my first game of my Coyotes season 4-3...that game was a thing of beauty...losing late after coughing up the puck and giving Morrison and Naslund the odd man rush. i love the fact that if i mess up and leave somebody open at the net that it usually costs me. i've had to concentrate playing defense much more on this game than any other hockey game i've ever played and that for the most part keeps my head in the game at all times. In 2K5 I could slack off because I knew the cpu wasn't going to score. You make a mistake in NHL06 and you pay for it most of the time. I gave up well over 40 goals total in the time i played it and I didn't feel cheated on any one goal.

This is perhaps the best aspect of the NHL 06 game. You have to play positionally sound defense or you'll give up a lot of goals. Also, you can't simply run around trying to hit people all day if you have the right slider settings. If you do you'll end up getting out of position and the puck will be in your net.

There are some other gameplay deficiencies but this is the one area that is done very well.

I have it for the pc and it plays like PK said, however I am very confident that is only temporary. The folks at www.nhldepot.com took NHL 2005 which was unplayable and made it a decent game. I think this game will be very good when they get done with it.

I'm looking forward to trying 2K6 out but the horrble rosters are an obstacle for me. I have AR but the Xbox is down so I will have to get the PS2 version and I don't have the tools to edit with that archaic machine.

Hoser its "horses for courses" and i respect the fact you like 06 but the jabs on 2k are weak ,have you played it and witnessed them ?if so ok but i havnt had a warp goal, wrap arounds are far from easy and not one game freeze , i may have had 1 the whole year in 2k5.

Im trying not to read any bug lists at 2k net i prefer to form my own opinions i will be the first to jump over kush if there are bad bugs again.

Keep us updated tho especially if the mod community can sort out the lack of hitting and the pass acuracy maybe the goalie flop.

Keep the opinions coming fellas its all in good discussion (i hope) no need to get bent about stuff.
