NHL 2K6 and NHL 06 out this week...
I think i'm leaning towards NHL 06 this year. I've grown somewhat bored with the 2K series. I didn't play EA's game last year but i'm hoping that the game is more like the 04 version. Both games are shipping on Tuesday.

NHL 2K6, no question. EA has put out one realistic hockey game since the mid-90s -- NHL 2004. That's no track record to trust.
Conversely, 2K hockey games have been very good from the get-go, improving almost every year.
I want realistic hockey, so the only apparent option is NHL 2K6 unless EA does something exceptional, which is highly unlikely based on NHL 2005.
Take care,
PK

I'm going to buy both titles. But if either doesn't offer the the Rivals multiplayer option I will be highly/hugely disappointed. Come on now, there's no excuse not to have more than a 2 on 2 game available for online play.
I myself prefer the ESPN brand of Hockey, but I hope EA can make me want to play their title this year.
Hey pk, sport, zeppo, scoopbrady, jrod and isdean hopefully we can get some Hockey gaming in.

Well, prepare to be highly/hugely disappointed. Rivals was/is barely considered any type of competition. They're apparently "looking into" this for the 360.ddtrane wrote:I'm going to buy both titles. Yeah, like Duke, I'll also rent NHL 06. But my expectations are very low for it based on last year's awful effort by EA.

Re: NHL 2K6 and NHL 06 out this week...
I can confirm from the PC Demo, that NHL06 is nothing like 05 and a lot like 04.tjung0831 wrote:I think i'm leaning towards NHL 06 this year. I've grown somewhat bored with the 2K series. PK - trust me.....2006 is nothing like 2005. The only issue is the crazy moves you can do with the right stick, but I dont use it and the game plays very realistically. If it can be toned down with sliders, maybe it will be usuable, but if not, no biggie.....just dont use it. I plan on renting both games....the low initial reviews of 2K have me a bit concerned, but the Gamepsot review made me feel a lot better.pk500 wrote:Yeah, like Duke, I'll also rent NHL 06. Are your impresssions based on a console demo or PC demo? I ask because EA is known for creating more realistic PC games than consoles in some series, Tiger Woods and the old NASCAR Thunder series, in particular.
Thanks,
PK

I'll probably get both anyway but for some reason i'm just not excited about 2K6....that could be the graphic whore in me though. EA though has been notorius for being the hot big breasted blonde while 2K is like the girl next door, unfortunately when you finally get the big breasted blonde home and undress her and take the panties off you see some wiener. Hopefully that will be fixed this year and EA doesn't f*** me.JackB1 wrote:PK - trust me.....2006 is nothing like 2005. My ass is still sore from how badly EA f*cked me last year with NHL 2005 after the excellent NHL 2004.tjung0831 wrote:Hopefully that will be fixed this year and EA doesn't f*** me.

I think the 2K series has been better looking than the EA games in every instance and sometimes by an extremely large margin (ESPN Football compared to Madden). Hell, NBA 2K1 looked better than NBA Live 2005 and certainly had a better framerate. I love MVP, but the graphics aren't nearly as good as 2K or MLB.tjung0831 wrote:EA though has been notorius for being the hot big breasted blonde
I'm talking hockey here. The 2K series hasn't matched up in the graphics department compared to EA.Leebo33 wrote:I think the 2K series has been better looking than the EA games in every instance and sometimes by an extremely large margin (ESPN Football compared to Madden). I wouldnt' agree with you here either, I don't think. The 2K series for me has had a more crisper look to it than EA, but I haven't played EA for much longer than a few games.tjung0831 wrote:I'm talking hockey here. PC demo......but the only game that really suffers from console/pc "multiple personality disorder" is Tiger Woods golf.....the rest of their games are pretty much the same except for graphics.pk500 wrote:Jack:

I would give a slight edge in the graphics department to EA, one thing I find better from them is their camera angle, on 2K no matter how much you zoom into the action, the players still seem to be far from the action.
Based on the demo I saw in EB store, the PS2 gameplay was a bit too fast on NHL 2006, but hopefully with the sliders one can correct that and find a more sim like game.

The face wraps in EA's hockey games since NHL 2004 have been eerily accurate -- really good stuff. Plus the skating graphics and engine in NHL 2004 were fluid and realistic as hell.
Too bad the gameplay went straight into the sh*tter with NHL 2005.
Take care,
PK

Going by the demo, this is not the s*** that was 2005. This is 2004 without all the hitting. It's fun as hell like 2004 was. How much of a problem will a lack of hitting be to the offline game? Who knows but I bet online would be a blast.pk500 wrote:The face wraps in EA's hockey games since NHL 2004 have been eerily accurate -- really good stuff. I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Playing the PC demo there's definetely less hitting, the D's are not so much breathing after you neck and you can construct your attack accordingly. If anything, I am a bit worried about the D's AI as it seemed a bit weak. Those were my impressions, based on the PC demo. Scoring is not a problem.
No, no. I'm not saying that Rivals is in competition with the ESPN or NHL. I just want the online aspect to be as fun as Rivals with 5 on 5 play.Airdog wrote:Well, prepare to be highly/hugely disappointed. Rivals was/is barely considered any type of competition. Lets hope the NHL2K6 AI is better than NHL2K5 AI was in this video.
