Small suggestion

Post by pk500 »

Boys:

I know it's a big month for new releases, with Moto GP 3, NASCAR 06, Rainbow Six, NHL 06, NHL 2K6, Richard Burns Rally, etc. But with the devastation on the Gulf Coast, video games don't matter that much right now.

I suggest that each of us should take the funds from one of our planned upcoming purchases this month and donate it to the Red Cross or another relief agency. The more I watch video this morning, the more astonishing the devastation really becomes to me.

These games are still going to be on the shelves in a few weeks. These people are in a world of misery, and their need is immediate.

Again, just a suggestion.

Take care,
PK

Anyone know of a good charity that will donate almost all of the money to hurricane relief(minus a little overhead). I know Red Cross will donate some but keep alot for another "rainy day"(bad pun) - since the people in nawleans are so bad off, they need all our help now and Red Cross won't give it to them.

BDunn:

Actually, the Red Cross is one of the more efficient, highly regarded charities by charity watchdog groups.

It has the highest rating (four stars) at charitynavigator.com and an A-minus rating from charitywatch.org, two of the leading watchdog groups.

Here's the Red Cross report from charitynavigator.com:

http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.c ... d/3277.htm

The Red Cross received a score of 60 out of 70, with 91 percent of contributions going directly to aid programs. Less than 10 percent is used for salaries, overhead, promotions, etc. That's pretty stout.

I think you can feel pretty safe that your money donated to the Red Cross will go to those who really need it.

Take care,
PK

I was mainly talking about the RC sept 11 fund. Initialy, they were not giving all the money donated to that fund to help those in need. They were diverting money to other needs ect. But do to the media outcry, they changed their Sept 11th policy. I just hope they do the same for this fund raiser too.

Well, the Red Cross has to be more efficient than the Federal government. Hell, my 6- and 4-year-old's lemonade stand is more efficiently run than the Federal government.

We donate the value of a game to the Red Cross every month. Our next donation will be more than that though.

Good post though pk, and those that are more fortunate, please do try and help with the relief cause from this latest catastrophe. You never know when your neck of the woods could be hit by a natural disaster and will need help.

My company does a 2:1 charitable contribution match, so I'm going to make a donation to the RC through them.

One of our good friends teaches at Tulane, she and her husband had to evaculate with everyone else. I don't know yet how their apartment fared -- some places were just devastated, others seemed to have suffered minor damage. Guess it depends on the flooding.

I'm in Pensacola, FL, along the Gulf Coast, and although we've been battered by both Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis, I feel for Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama as they took the worst of this one.

When you see on television the amount of destruction Katrina caused, it absolutely amazes you. I always thought we had it rough when we were hit by both storms in less than a year, but seeing New Orleans post-Katrina brings an entirely new perspective to my opinion.

PK, excellent advice. The people along the Gulf Coast need our money more than video games do.

Great idea. I am sure there will be plenty of options of places to donate, the problem right now is that transportation to the area is the issue and the Red Cross is the one that can get through. But I am sure that plenty of churches, civic groups and companies will be kicking into gear to help out.

The needs are great and the cleanup will be ongoing. I remember seeing the results of Hugo in South Carolina a month after the storm, and there was still a mess to be cleaned up. This is even worse.
