OT: what are you listening to these days

Post by James_E »

Figured it was time for another one of these.

Over the past few days:

Anthrax: We've Come for You All
System of a Down: Toxicity and Mesmerize (brilliant stuff)
NIN: Pretty Hate Machine and With Teeth
Foo Fighters: all their albums
Lynyrd Skynyrd: The Collection
Iron Maiden: Powerslave
Eric Clapton: Unplugged
Nirvana: Unplugged
"100 Masterpieces of Classical Music": various volumes of the 10 CD set.

Nice list James. Here's mine:

System of a Down: Mesmerize (still getting a lot of play)
Foo Fighters: Foo Fighters, There is Nothing Left to Lose, In Your Honor
Disturbed: Ten Thousand Fists (much better than their second one)
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Odd, I haven't listened to much on my MP3 player the last three weeks other than downloaded podcasts. It's probably the first time ever I've given my MP3 player a break, totally unintentional.

But I am listening to a ton of progressive house on XTCradio.com and friskyradio.com and good, real jazz on kkjz.org.

Take care,
PK

De La Soul - 3ft High and Rising

Saw this listed in Spin magazine's 100 Greatest Albums of the past 20 years feature. An enjoyable and fun album, for sure.

White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

My Doorbell is one of my favorite songs of recent memory. Like most Stripes album, I really enjoy half of it, somewhat enjoy 1/4 and just don't like a 1/4 of it.

I've mainly been listening to what I have in my Creative MuVo Sport flash player (1.25 GB after memory card expansion) while I run or do yardwork.

I finally bought Son Volt "Trace" this week after hearing many good things.

NIN- With Teeth

U2 - Achtung Baby, HTDAAB

Interpol - Antics

Pearl Jam, Van Halen, and Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits (my own selections)

Coldplay - X&Y

How could I forget that one? It's in heavy rotation. I totally agree about "My Doorbell."

I'm sorry but the shuffle feature on an MP3 player is not the greatest invention ever. The internet is #1, and then Tivo is a close second.

Okay, okay...I'll give you those. Although my iPod and my TiVo interchange between 2 & 3 a lot.

Newer stuff in the rotation:

Common "Be"

Redwalls "Universal Blues" (much better than their major label debut which was also released recently)

Fountains of Wayne "Out of State Plates"

John Prine "Fair and Square"

and most amazingly Jamie Lidell "Multiply" Just a staggering change in direction with unbelievable results

Violent Femmes "Viva Wisconsin" - a great collection of their live performances.

Cake "Comfort Eagle" - I will never tire of this album. Cake is one of my all time favorites.

Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France (4 CD boxed set) - I'm a huge fan of Gypsy swing jazz and nobody did it better than Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli.

Johnny Cash "The Essential Johnny Cash" - We're coming up on the 2 year anniversary of his death. His recordings for Sun Records puts Elvis to shame. I'll be wearing all black on September 12th.

Ween "Chocolate and Cheese" - Love this album.

Fatboy Slim "On the Floor at the Boutique" - Live DJ music. I'm not a big fan of electronica but Fatboy Slim is so accessible and funky.

Gorillaz "Demon Days" - I like it more than their first album. But it is very different.

Decapitated "Nihility"
The flaming lips "the soft bulletin"

"Trace" is one of the best albums of the 90s, Leebo, I hope you like it. I recently started listening to it again as well. The Interpol album has really grown on me, too.

Some new stuff I've been digging:

The Hold Steady: Separation Sunday
The Mobius Band: City vs. Country EP (if you like The Postal Service, check them out)
Spoon: Girls Can Tell
Stars: Set Yourself on Fire (a great pop album with a nice, non-ripoff 80s feel)
Sufjan Stevens: Greetings From Michigan
Ted Leo & Pharmacists: The Tyranny of Distance and Shake the Sheets (great guitar-driven indie rock with a rough, early Elvis Costello feel).
The Decemberists (I just got some of their earlier discs)
My Morning Jacket: It Moves
A.C. Newman: The Slow Wonder

Some classic stuff:
Heart: Greatest Hits vol. 1 (not a great band, but I forgot how much I liked some of their songs)
Weezer: The blue album (I was late to the Weezer game but absolutely love this disc)
A whole buttload of Rush

I haven't even heard of 3/4 of the bands people have mentioned on here. Not really sure what that says about me.

I've been listening to whatever on my pod. Haven't downloaded anything since the last time we had one of these threads and haven't listened to all of those yet.

But one CD I want to get is the SFU soundtrack, since hearing that song "Breathe Me" on the ending montage of the finale.

Does anyone have any knowledge of how safe Limewire is? Or if someone can give me a little direction in terms of other sites to check out, please pm me.

Thank you.
