OXM Reviews - Madden 06 - 8.0 & NHL 06 - 8.8

Post by bdoughty »

NOTE: NCAA 2006 got a 9.1 from OXM

Previous Madden Scores from OXM
2005: 9.1
2004: 8.9
2003: 8.8
2002: 9.0

From Madden 06 review

+ Choosing your parents(that's right,your parents)
+ Tom Brady's field-wide QB vison
- Acting in movies (a script reading mini-game?)
- Still slower than NCAA
? Why is create-a-fan still taking space on this disc?

------------------------------

Have yet to see anything written about why NHL 06 Scored so well. Maybe EA sent OXM the wrong check for each game review? ;) ;)

Did not get the "Acting Mini Game?" until I went to IGN and saw the screenshots from the Diary they are running

Yikes... More concentration on AI and Presentation, less time on acting mini games.

It appears I will be skipping the Superstar mode just like I did race for the Heisman. Part 2 of the Superstar diary is less then flattering toward the game and the mode.

http://sports.ign.com/articles/637/637233p1.html

Remember this comes from one of the biggest Madden fans that is also a game editor (Mr Robinson).

But that's when the Cardinals come cheating back. And when I say cheat, I mean cheat. They score two of the cheapest touchdowns I have seen in years. The first on a punt return where my returner is hit a step after catching the ball, coughs it up, and a Cardinal runs it all the way back for a touchdown. The second Cardinal TD really pisses me off, however, enough where I actually threw the controller straight into the ground (don't worry, I can expense a new one). Warner throws an interception where my safety Wilson picks off the pass and is immediately hit by Boldin. Wilson fumbles the ball when he hits the ground and Boldin gets back up, scoops up the ball and runs 50 yards for the score. I challenge the ruling, but somehow the play stands. 14-14.

What a bunch of BS. Seriously. The Cardinals have like 14 total yards and 14 points thanks to wonky AI. This is on All-Pro level, and I expect more.
I end the game with a 108.1 QB rating, 175 yards through the air, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Not bad rook.

After the game I head over to my agent's office. Here are my options:

- Tell the press I guarantee to win my next game.

- Let me talk to the press about my next opponent.

- I personally guarantee the playoffs this year! Tell everyone!

- I would like to announce my retirement.

- I demand a trade!

- How about we hold a conference call and complain about my coaches.

--------

I just had a big game, but I don't want to shoot my mouth off with a guarantee…not just yet. I'm curious about demanding a trade. I wonder how long the process takes or if there are negotiations at all with your agent about what teams you would accept a trade to. My curiosity gets the better of me and I ask out of New York just to see what will happen.

I press A and all of a sudden my agent says "Congratulations! You have been picked up by the Texans." The Giants traded my ass in a blink of the eye to another team who has a good young quarterback.

"Is there anything else I can help you with?" My agent asks.

So I demand another trade just to see what will happen. "Congratulations! You have been picked up by the Steelers."

For more of the instaity read the article. I will stick to franchise mode.

A problem has been found in Madden 2006 according to the people on Madden radio. The problem is a "jetpacking" animation where if you press up on the stick the receiver out jumps the defensive backs no matter the ratings. This was an issue in Madden 2004 but was fixed for Madden 2005.

I edited this post because I said huge flaw, but this is not what Madden radio said. I do not want to mislead anyone.

Well I will hold out hope that usually when the die hard Madden ballers don't like the game, it means I will.

this could very well be the stupiest thing i have ever seen in a video game.

I don't know, you have to go to page 5 of the IGN article before making that claim. That same ROOKIE QB lead the Steelers to a 7-9 season and was somehow named to the Pro Bowl. This of course after winning the infamous (and now video game worthy NFL Madden Challenge) ugh...

Also I am concerned with Terrell Davis. It appears as if he has gone from a great running back to stalker of rookies (pawning himself off as a "mentor").

The one good thing about a new generation is many of these features will be cut. I hated the Crib from ESPN, the RFTH and already hate the Superstar mode w/o even seeing it. I remember a time when it used to be simple things like Madden cards and Mascot games (things that took up little of the devs time) that I hated. Now the things I hate most are becoming the big "yearly" feature EA gives us.. Leaving me with a slightly upgraded gameplay and graphics with one or two features that obviously did not take a ton of manpower to implement like "Cone Vision and Truck Stick."

Wow, new Madden features have now transitioned from pointless fluff to absolutely bizzare. Acting mini-games?

Have they done anything to improve actual gameplay other than QB vision?

On the bright side, I doubt much of this crap will make it into the PSP version. 8)

I don't know. I've always thought the crib, apartment, dorm room s*** was completely idiotic.. but that's me.

As much as I enjoyed Madden last year and enjoy NCAA this year... some of this stuff is nerve racking to read about.

I'm not one to rip EA just because they're a business first and foremost like a lot of other people, but this "fluff" does sound rediculous.

As long as online play with close friends is squared away like NCAA 2006 then I'm gold.

If betas are already going out for NHL '06, I assume the new rule changes have not been implemented?

Have no clue but they are magazines reviews, so I doubt they could fit the discussion of rules changes within their alotted paragraph to begin with.

Both EA & VC have said they were waiting on getting the final rule changes before going gold with a game. From the latest screens of NHL 2K6 they now shows the "Biggie Sized" blue lines which I do not think the NHL decided on going with (I would assume they get edited back before release), plus the new NHL Logo to boot. Eh hoser look at me throwing out the hockey knowledge! Oh and I prefer the old logo.

And EA got exclusive rights to the NFL? I guess I'll be keeping the 05 version a bit longer. About NHL 06, I doubt they'll have time to change for the latest rules, not to mention outdated rosters. Sad, since the season doesn't start until Oct 05, so please EA, take your time, delay the game if you have to, don't rush either game.

There's really no need for NHL games to come out until the end of September/early October. That way the video games can come out when the real games are about to start and capitalize on whatever interest there is in the new NHL.

If NHL 06 is as bad as NHL 2005, I could care less if EA releases a hockey game at all this year, new rules or not.

And this new mode in Madden stupifies me. Absolutely stupifies me. Good rant material for this week's podcast!

Take care,
