The Moose...Still on the Loose?

Post by 10spro »

With the new CBA to be ratified by both owners and NHLPA today, a frenzy of free agents will start looking for new teams as the new economics of the NHL will take place with a CAP after all. And rumours are that Mark Messier may not retire after all, instead he may end up with the 1st team where he started his career: the Oilers.

Not only that but the Sidney Crosby sweepstakes is tomorrow at 3:00pm and will be apparently be televised live by ESPNnews.
Here is what i don't understand though... They are going to do the drawing in reverse order...30th selection to the 1st selection. If you are one of the 4 teams with 3 chances that seems to me you have a better chance of getting the 30th pick than the first. Does anybody know how this is going to be done? If the Rangers end up with Crosby though...conspiracy theories will runeth over tomorrow! I'm pumped!

I would love it if he finished with the Oilers.

Are you sure they are drawing in reverse order or just showing the results that way. They aren't drawing "live" are they?

The Penguins are supposed to be "buyers" for a change this offseason. It should be interesting.

How much is the Hockey package?

Well i'm reading the forums over at hockeysfuture.com and nobody seems to really know how it's going to pan out. TSN announced the drawing would be in reverse order but i'm still not sure if that's just for tv viewing only. I'm not a math major or anything but my guess is he goes to one of the 10 teams that have two balls in the hopper.

Not sure how much the hockey package is this year, but I will be buying it for sure. This is the most excited I have been about a Pens season in a long time. After so many years of them selling off their best players at the deadline and getting nothing in return, it will be fun to watch them compete on an even playing field. They have only a couple of players under contract right now, and I trust GM Craig Patrick to make some good signings. Even though the Pens finished with the worst record the last season played, they had a great finish to the year, and they have a great group of young talent in place. It looks like most Pens fans are expecting them to be a strong playoff contender this year, which is a nice change from knowing that they had no chance right from the start the past few years.

It's going to be interesting to see how the fans of small market teams vs larger market teams support their teams this year. I'm guessing the Penguins won't see any drop in attendance at all, I think their fans will be excited that they now have a chance to win every year, and were willing to give up a season for that to happen.

Is there a salary floor in the NHL? That is something baseball sorely needs....unless Mark Cuban buys the Pirates!

Yeah, The Rangers have 3 chances to get at "the next one", at this point it's a bit suspicious to me. Who says $$$ can't buy what you want. Bettman has anything to do with it? His ass is on the line as is Goodnow's.

Don't even get me started on Cuban buying the Pirates. I had accepted the Pirates being doomed to suck forever until Cuban brought up his interest in the team last week. Now I've turned into a raging McClatchy-Nutting hater, knowing that there is somebody out there who actually cares about the Pirates and would likely spend the money and make the decisions necessary to make them a winner. I almost wish he hadn't said anything at all now, it just makes it that much more painful to watch the Pirates lose, knowing it doesn't have to be that way.

why isn't bettman gone already? didn't they sign the deal? He should have been gone right after the deal was signed. That one guy has done more to hurt hockey than any other person.

Cuban must be making the rounds because there are rumors he's interested in buying the St. Louis Blues as well.

Bettman isn't going anywhere...he did exactly what the owners wanted him to do which is basically break the union. He did what was requested of him, nothing more, nothing less.

That would thrill me to no end as an Oilers' fan since 1982. Yeah, the Moose isn't that effective on the ice other than his leadership qualities, but there's something that's just "right" about him ending his career in his hometown, Edmonton, as an example for all of the younger players in the Oilers' system.

Take care,

Goodenow is the guy who should be gone. He lost to the owners, and the players got nowhere near the deal they would have last fall.

Goodenow's credibility is shot. He'll be replaced shortly, I'm guessing.

I'm hoping the NHL Center Ice package is discounted this year as a chit to lure fans back to the game. If it's $99 or less, I'll jump on it. It would be cool as hell to see all of the Oilers' games.

Goodenow will "resign"

Betteman is not going anywhere. He did a bang up job actually. (Yeah we lost a season, but he reset the economics like they all wanted.)

Eventually he'll be gone once they ratify the agreement today but for the NHL to be totally healthy again, Bettman has to go too. In my opinion he tried to expand teams too fast under a contract where owners had nowhere to go but lose $$$ to underachievers like Messier. Having said that, if the moose ends up there, that's what the Oilers need, a good leadership guy with experience to a good young team. I doubt he can score up to 25 goals again, but he'll be a good PK and also help on the PP.

One thing he's better than most, he's a great faceoff guy.
