Xbox 360 interview

1 billion, huh? I like to see a positive attitude, but this comment just sounds silly.

It does sound silly, especially when you consider that nothing on the 360 horizon seems particularly sexy or exciting.
Sure, the same thing seems to be true of Sony, but at this point, I don't see the consoles doing that big a business -even combined. Hard to get too excited when some of the big games are simply going to be rehashes of previous bestsellers - a new Halo for 360 , a new Grand Theft Auto for the PS3.
Don't get me wrong, I think both consoles are going to do well, and I will get one or both at some point, but it will come down to the games and right now there seems to be some good stuff, but nothing particularly innovative or mind blowing that is going to make gaming that huge.

Kevin is absolutely right.
The game industry loves to compare itself these days to the film industry, citing that more money was spent by consumers on gaming last year than on movie receipts.
Well, there's another analogy to be made, too: Most of the mainstream game hits these days are sequels or rehashes, much like Hollywood.
But then again, what genre out there with mass appeal hasn't been mined to the bedrock? Stick-and-ball sports, racing games and shooters all have been done to the point of overcooking, so some developer needs to somehow reinvent those genres.
And while RPG fans are as dedicated to their genre as any sector of gaming, RPG's are a niche. They're not mass-market, especially as gaming tries to reach out beyond the typical "gamer" and to the general public as a whole.
Take care,
PK

Good point, Vin, but for those who are sold hard on Xbox Live, like me, PS3 could deliver 3D HDTV graphics in my lap and I still wouldn't give a sh*t because of the lack of focus by Sony on online gaming.vinny-b wrote:have been in the Microsoft camp (Xbox) since the sportsreviewers days. the PS3 Killzone, "motocross", (and a couple others) were spellbinding, IMO. We will see, if this is indeed gameplay footage...
I guess I'm just a niche to Sony as a predominantly online gamer. But Sony loses a potential customer by ignoring that niche.
Take care,
PK

Problem is none of the PS3 demos was actual gameplay footage, yes I am speculating but don't you think they would just come out and say this is actual gameplay footage?vinny-b wrote:have been in the Microsoft camp (Xbox) since the sportsreviewers days. For me personally, I am not buying any of it after the PS2 lies, once Sony shows me an actual machine with a running game I will start to listen.

Sony was just pouring out the hype machine in an attempt to derail the 360's momentum. E3 was obviously full of hype on both sides, but all of Sony's next-gen "tech demo's" had nothing to do with actual gameplay. Their hardware isn't even setup yet and their gpu hasn't even been taped.
Getting past the hype, I'm sure both next gen systems will be pretty close. Their cpu + gpu guts will be pretty close with each having specific advantages, but both are going to be capable of delivering some pretty impressive visuals in HD.
I don't think we'll see a distinct gap graphically between the systems. The competition is good for gamers, as prices drop and devs push to make better games that are worthy of a next-gen moniker. Sony is going to push their "blu-ray" drive, but they are still quiet on an answer to live.
When it comes down to the final line, its going to be dependant on who's got the software. Hardware advantages aside, the one with the games wins. Microsoft is pushing their tools and reaching out for some japenese dev support. Sony is promising that the PS3 will be easier to develop for than the PS2 was.
I plan on being an early adopter for 360. They'll be competitively priced in order to grab as big a chunk of the market as they can, they also have the Live factor, which I just don't see Sony catching up to quickly, and finally, with the genre of games that I prefer, Microsoft's in house studios really outperform Sony's. I might get a PS3 down the line because there are sure to be some exclusive titles worth playing on it as well, but I'll wait it out to see how well their reality lives up to their hype.
Same here. I'll wait a year before I buy any of these systems. Seems like for a new console, it takes about a years time before you start seeing games that utlitize their power.Danimal wrote:Problem is none of the PS3 demos was actual gameplay footage, yes I am speculating but don't you think they would just come out and say this is actual gameplay footage?vinny-b wrote:have been in the Microsoft camp (Xbox) since the sportsreviewers days. It will also take a year to get all of the features put back into games like Madden
I have pretty much resigned myself to waiting until at least next spring before getting any new console. I revisted a few of my older Xbox titles over the weekend and discovered that I'm happy with what I've got. Games like Splashdown and NBA Street 2 are a couple of years old now, and nothing since then has beat them at their respective genres.
I'm always up for new and improved versions, or even some creative titles like the Oddworld line, but I don't see the next gen making any real leap in quality of software until at least a year after the hardware is out.

That's funny, I did the same thing this weekend. I pulled Links out of the library and bought TOCA2 and had a hell of a time playing them. Links is 2 years old now but it's better than most of the newer games out there. For myself, the current Xbox satisfies my gameplay and graphics needs for a game system.
cmon vinny-b. This is digital-sportpage, not a childish IGN forum. We here don't fall for the Sony hype. Emotion engine, cell processor, ps2 has toy story graphix, supercomputer gigaflops nonsense. They haven't even finalized specs. No PS3 machine actually exists, just a plastic mockup. Alpha kits went out 2 months ago.
What better way than to kill 360 thunder than to create pre-rendered, fake, unrealistically beautiful game movies.

Yet 99% of all DSP members owned a PS2. Most purchasing one at launch. Between Cincy and myself we purchased more then some small countries. It's not about hype it is about the fact that we are gamers wanting to buy a new gaming machine. Just look at all the people here who bought a slimmed down version of the hype (PSOne) and the handheld version of the same thing (PSP). Sure there are the PK's of the world but console monogamy is usually limited to Nintendo diehards. Also who is this "we" you are referring to? Not even 100 posts and you are speaking on behalf of the forum.
Of course the movies were not in real time. Yet on that same note many of the Xbox 360 movies were not actual gameplay. When did Sony become Satan and Microsoft become the second coming of Snow White.
I have a ps2 as well bdoughty. I bought one at launch. MS has some great things but some bad stuff. Great online, more full featured system (no memory cards, 4 ports, built in online, better graphics). Xbox is great at shooters and racers, but lacking in platformers and game variety.
Sony just tends to lie or embellish more, that's all. Xbox get hammered by the mainstream media at E3 b/c its games on alpha kits were not a pretty as Sony's CGI stuff. Heck, most big game media outlets ranked 360 behind even nintendo who had absolutely nothing shown at E3.

The Sony hype machine is on, but it aint the Dreamcast they're trying to keep down this time.
Xbox 360 will be a player.
By the way, anyone who actually thinks the PS3 will be available in the U.S. in the spring of 2006 is kidding themselves. You might be able to import one from Japan around that time, but then you'll also only be playing Japanese imported games.
My guess is summer '06 at the earliest and holiday season '06 at the latest. In either case, that's much too far away for a mark like me to wait to buy a new game console, so I'll be picking up a 360 at launch and a PS3 whenever it really does come out.

It used to be that I would wait in line at launch to get the console that had the best-looking NFL, MLB and NHL titles. That meant getting a dreamcast to play NFL 2k and an XBox to be able to play ESPN. Now that ESPN is gone, my priority has shifted to MLB by 989. XBox 360 doesn't have anything equal lined up, as far as I know. It would be nice to go with the system that offers XBox Live, but I'll pass if it means I can play the new MLB on the PS3 whenever its released.

In recent news the BBC has reported that Microsoft and Sony's future systems are potential stealth weapons that could be used in conjunction with political radicals inciting "star wars" spoken of in previous press conferences in Washington. Nuclear weapons technology and the core processing power of either XBOX360 or PS3's CPUs/GPUs could potentially be sold to China, in what CNN reports as, "...recent talks between Microsoft Chair Bill Gates and Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian indicate a possible ploy for economic alliances."
China could buy a crapload of hardware from them.

Of course with China the hardware to software tie in ractio would be horrible.
