I kissed them goodbye when they lost Alou and didn't pick up a closer in the offseason.dbdynsty25 wrote:Well you guys can kiss the Cubs goodbye. Losing Mark Prior to a broken arm, his pitching arm, is not a good thing for the Cub faithful. Maybe next year!
Who am I kidding... I kiss them goodbye every year.

Chicago Trib says he could be back by the All-Star Break. Plus, despite all their pitching woes, they are 9th in ERA, 1st in strikeouts, and 6th in WHIP. If they can hold it together for another month while Prior and Wood heal up, they can be in the thick of things come September.
I am not silly enough to count on the Cubs for anything, but they have been the opposite of last year's team, gritting through some injuries and tough losses to hang in there.

Get ahold of yourself, man!sportdan30 wrote:Tim,
Please think before ever making another Cardinals Magic Number post. 5.5 games ahead of the Cubbies and we're playing like cr&p. I'm sorry, but Isringhausen is overrated.
Let's look at the facts. The Cards are now on a pace to win 104 games. But lets not stop there! If they play .500 ball the rest of the way, they still manage 89 wins.
The Cubs are on a pace to win 87 games. Not enough to even beat the Cards if they become a .500 team. Seriously, the Cubs are not going to win 90 games. And the Cards have won 7 of their last 10, so they are not exactly playing like crap.
As for Izzy, he's only overrated if you really thought of him as an equal to Gagne or Rivera. He's NEVER been that. What is overrated is the importance of the closer. Maybe it meant something in the Bruce Sutter and Goose Gossage days, when they would stroll in during the 7th and close a game out, but it's been a long time since then.
So it's 104 wins now instead of 105? LOL
I think you can drop the 104/105 win pipe dream. The cards have a losing record vs teams with winning records and their going to have to play a tougher schedule than they did in may.
This thread should be renamed 'Baseball 101 : pennants aren't won in May'.
As for the cubs, if they continue to play like this, it won't really matter where they are with the cards in the NLC in september. Theyll probably win the WC. That would be interesting to see, a cubs-cards NLCS if both teams get that far.

I still think they will hit 105. It's just that they keep slumping, but then they are still on a pace to win more than a hundred games.HouOilers wrote:So it's 104 wins now instead of 105? LOL
Well, you are wrong. Twenty-three of their first Fifty-three games have been against the NL Central. Fifty-seven of their last ninety-nine games will be against the Central.I think you can drop the 104/105 win pipe dream. Maybe they should call it, "Baseball 102: Cub and Astro fans have no clue what it takes to win a Pennant"This thread should be renamed 'Baseball 101 : pennants aren't won in May'.
So you feel free to dismiss the Cards record over 53 games, but are willing to entertain playoff dreams for a team that was under.500 just eight games ago? The Royals just swept the Yankees. Ready to nominate Buddy Bell for manager of the year?As for the cubs, if they continue to play like this, it won't really matter where they are with the cards in the NLC in september. How about "Advanced Baseball Wisdom 201: Pennants CAN be lost in May." I bet Astro fans could ace that class!

LOL, why so uptight? I thought the cards are gonna win 105 games? Why are you so flustered? Something worrying you?
All I know is that REAL baseball fans are smart enough not to proclaim pennants in May, even if their team is 20 games up. That's just basic baseball logic.
I still think they are going to win 105. I'm just confused why you would make up stuff to say they weren't. One of the reasons I think they will is the weak-ass division they play in. They will play even more of their games against the Central the rest of the way.HouOilers wrote: LOL, why so uptight? I thought the cards are gonna win 105 games? Why are you so flustered? At least I have never been reduced to rooting for the Cubs. I've never seen one seven game win streak given so much weight before.

1) Maybe they should call the Cardinals the 2nd or 3rd best team money can buy. With their lineup, they SHOULD win the freaking pennant. At least Cardinal ownership is not stupid enough to let 30-40% of their offense (Beltran/Kent) walk out the door in the offseason....Jayhawker wrote:

2) I am finding it humorous that Cardinal fan is piling on the Astros at this point. Houston's season was doomed the minute Kent and Beltran bolted and Berkman went down during an idiotic pick up game. Houston had their chances last Fall, but at the end of the day did not have enough horsepower to compete position by position. Until the Astros find ownership that is truly committed to doing whatever it takes to win, Houston fans will continue to dream of what it is like to see a World Series in H-town....
If I recall, the Cubs were in 3rd place, 5games behind the Astros and Cardinals in August/September of 2003 and still won the division. As it stands now they are only 1 game behind the wild card lead. The national league is extremely weak this year and the same weak teams the Cards are playing in the Central, the Cubs are playing them also. For the Cubs to be "only" 5.5 back with injuries to their #1 & #2 pitchers (who should both be back late July), and starting shortstop, the Cards should be very worried.. especially since the two teams play each other 14 more times this season. And since Hendry traded Hawkins that gets rid of several potential blown saves.
The Cardinal team had a career year last year, don't expect it again this year.

Hey, look who's a half game ahead of the Braves in the WC standings. Too bad those Expos are so damn tough to beat, looks like you might miss out on another meaningful divisional title.dbdynsty25 wrote:I was saying the Cubs are done, and I stand by that statement.
