Worried about Amped 3

Post by thejake »

We were a big fan of Amped 2, but it was not a game for the casual fan of snowboarding. Amped 2 was a highly technical affair that did little to keep the interest of the Average Joe or Joellen. A formal affair in almost every way, Amped 2 was a sweet title but only for a small niche of gamers who could actually rattle off a list of pro snowboarders. Amped 3 seems, at least from our short demo of this work in progress, a totally different game than its predecessor. The concept of Amped 3 is much more lighthearted than Amped titles of the past, focusing on game experience customization, Tony Hawk’s Underground type combos and attitude (with a little extra Jackass thrown in for good measure), and general fun on a snow-covered mountain.

The Amped franchise does need a new direction, in my opinion, as Amped 2 wasn't as good of a game as the original, in my opinion. I'm just not sure if this is the right direction, but at least the developer is trying.

Amped 2 focused WAY too much on grinding. It was Tony Hawk Pro Skater on snow, which is wrong. Yes, grinds are part of snowboarding, but so are big air and tricks while in the air. Amped 2 de-emphasized those WAY too much compared to the original.

Plus the online play in Amped 2 wasn't robust at all. Board down the mountain with buddies, and the guy who grinds the most scores the most points and wins. Wow. Knock me over with a feather. Amped 2 was a good chill-out, conversational game online, but that's more of an indictment of the dull-as-dishwater online modes than a compliment of the game.

I think a boardercross mode, both online and offline, would breath new life into Amped. I've really grown to like boardercross during the X Games, and this would bring a racing mode into Amped that would be really cool online and offline.

A pure half-pipe skills mode also would be a big plus. Yeah, there were half-pipes worked into courses in the first two Amped games, but I would love to see a mode in which competition was just in the pipe, and you would score points for the tricks you could score in a certain time span in the pipe, just like in the X Games. Add a killer or customizable soundtrack, and this would be a great mode, especially online.

I would be more than willing to sit for a couple of minutes to watch other guys do tricks, inspiring me to compete and out-trick them when I got into the pipe, all while Social Distortion's cover of "Ring of Fire" was blaring from my speakers. :)

Take care,
PK
