Possible $500 price tag on PS3...

Post by maddoc1979 »

Here's a link. It's still just speculation, but that's way too much. $500 on what most parents still deem a toy is a little tough to swallow.

Interesting... I think Sony will have to take the loss and remain price competitive with the 360 or somehow convince everybody that their console is that much more superior...

Do we even know what the '360's price point will be yet? I pre-ordered mine at EB and the system has it for $499. Now, that is usually just so they can have a price that they know it will not exceed since they have no real price point yet, however, part of me is really worried that it will not go down very much. I am hoping for a $350 tag on the '360'.

It would be a nice marketing hook if the Xbox 360 retailed for ... $360.

I know, I'm a genius.

You're on a marketing roll this week, PK.

I am guessing if they are raising game prices, they will raise console prices, although I could see them taking a loss to remain at the tried-and-true $299 limit and make the money back on software.

Five hundred bucks is probably too steep for me. Once you figure on a couple games, maybe an extra controller, etc., you're looking at $650-700. There would need to be some kind of free ball-massager add-on for it to worth that much.

I will not pay $500 for a console. Absolutely not. If the Xbox 360 and PS3 retail at $499, I will wait until the inevitable price drops.

Ask around in Akihabara. I'm sure they can hook you up with a Hello Kitty one or something. Those Japanese are nothing if not inventive when it comes to peripherals.

Agreed. I'll simply hang on to my Xbox. I don't game enough to warrant that kind of price. If I was single with no dependents, it would be a no brainer.

I hope my Sega Master System with Walter Payton football will fetch 500 in a trade in.

Agreed, pk. Even the way I toss money around, I refuse to pay that much for a console. I think I remember someone doing some research a few years back and they determined that $299 was a possible break point for a new console with most consumers. Although I would probably go as high as $399, anything over that might have me waiting for the price drops as well.

I say that now, but by the time they announce a solid price, I'll probably have already paid two or three hundred down on the 360 and it won't take much more than a nudge to get me to pay another $100 or $200 to get it.

One thing for sure, I won't pay $500 for a PS3. With no built in hard drive and pretty much no online community, that's way too much I don't care if the system is made of gold.

I think the pricing schemes are going to be very important as this thing plays out. I know I'm getting a 360 and it will be out first. But if it's $400 and all the games are $60, I may not have anything left when the PS3 rolls out.

I'm with you as well. $500 is absolutely rediculous. I would say the suggested $360 price would be the absolute most i would pay, and they are going to have to convince me that the launch games are worth it. That extra $60 over $300 is a game that i could have. If sony actually announces a $500 price i think MS will quickly take control of the console market. However i really doubt they are that dumb.

Thanks for the love, web!

Anyways, with all this talk about nextgen consoles going for $300-$500, I'm probably going to "cash out" my current gen consoles right now and put them up on ebay while I can still get something for them. I think I'll be okay going with a PSP/PC lineup until 360 comes out.

IIRC, the PS1 and PS2 launched in Japan for more than the $299 they launched in the US. You also have to remember that the dollar is down against most currencies these days. Also, there was almost a 1-year difference between Japan and US launches. It remains to be seen if they will launch simultaneously or just in Japan first.

I would be reluctant to pay $500 too but the hardware in these things are definitely worth that much. The X360 will have wireless controllers (but Wifi may require buying an optional adapter?), triple-core CPU optimized for games and a GPU which performs like GPUs in $500 video cards (but not with the dedicated memory of those $500 cards). To get comparable performance on a PC at the time of launch will cost way more than $500 (and no PC CPU may reach the floating-point performance until 2007 or later).

The PS3 also will have a lot of components which would cost more in PCs or consumer electronics devices. Sony and nVidia claims the RSX has more performance than two GF6800 Ultra cards. The Blu-Ray drive will play HDTV movies at a time when dedicated HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players should still be well over $500.

Still, pricing over $299 will be a steep obstacle for many gamers. Most of us can afford higher prices but are simply unwilling. But a lot of gamers can't afford the higher prices. In the fight for volume and market share, prices should drop quickly, if they don't start out low in the first place. J. Allard believe the first to 10 million wins so MS seems prepared for a price war. Sony could say the PS3 is better and deserves a price premium but they will have to try to at least be within $50, if not be at parity.

Didn't the 3DO sell for $699 when it first came out? Then again, it never really "sold" at all, even when they dropped it down to $399 and below. I was still in school and working at an EB back then, and my impression from speaking with the parents was that NO ONE would buy a game machine for that price. Guess we'll see if there were any lessons learned.

I dont think sony will sell it at $500. I remember the same thing being said about PS2 before it came out. That $350 area probably will be the price.

My plan is to snag the 360 early. It should be competitively priced as they are in a race to get it into as many hands as possible before ps3 launches.

Sony has a lot of questions to answer, and I'll be content to wait "buzz becoming reality" out to see if it ends up being a truly superior machine. If it does (or a more likely scenario, they suddenly start winning the war of exclusives), it won't be until well into the life cycles of both in this coming generation. By then it should be down in price and an easier-to-justify purchase.
